SayhMuhammad 'Utman 'Abduhu (1904-1983) e la tariqa Burhaniyya" analizza una tra le figure più carismatiche del Sufismo del Ventesimo secolo nella regione della Valle del Nilo, un esempio emblematico della persistenza del pensiero e della devozione sufi all'interno delle società arabe. Al centro del libro è il ruolo del maestro sufi come modello di perfezione per i propri discepoli nella società araba contemporanea: il processo storico di consolidamento e diffusione del Sufismo tra Egitto e Sudan, l'elemento dottrinale, il metodo e gli adattamenti pratici scaturiti dal cambiamento sociale. La vita e l'insegnamento di sayh Muhammad 'Utman 'Abduhu — per i discepoli, Fahr al-Din, ossia «Orgoglio della fede» — si distinguono per ricchezza e unicità nella storia del Sufismo presente nei territori attorno al Nilo, consentendo di ripensare stereotipi e semplificazioni sulla sopravvivenza dell'insegnamento sufi nel mondo odierno. La biografia del maestro sudanese rappresenta, pertanto, un caso paradigmatico di compimento del sentiero sufi, oltre che di perseveranza dell'iniziato teso a percorrere la via fino a diventare maestro e a far rivivere una tra le più consolidate tradizioni sufi della Valle del Nilo. Abdul-Hamid II Istanbul, 21 settembre 1842 – Istanbul, 10 febbraio 1918 è stato il 34^ sultano dell'Impero ottomano, dal 31 agosto 1876 al 27 aprile 1909, quando, a causa della sollevazione militare dei Giovani Turchi, gli subentrò il fratello Mehmet V. Egli visse il periodo di declino della potenza dell'Impero ottomano, ma durante il suo periodo di regno fu il principale responsabile degli ammodernamenti che consentirono all'impero di progredire, esercitando ancora un forte controllo sui suoi affari interni. Tra i cambiamenti si ricordano la razionalizzazione della burocrazia, l'ambizioso progetto della Ferrovia del ?ij?z, la creazione di un sistema moderno di codici di leggi (1896), la fondazione di un censimento su sistemi moderni, un sistema per la registrazione ed il controllo della stampa, la sistemazione dei salari degli ufficiali (1880), la prima moderna scuola di legge (1898). Il Sultano fu anche proprietario del mitico diamante Hope, il diamante maledetto, che ricevette in dono un anno prima di essere destituito dal fratello. Frederick William Hasluck was an English antiquarian, historian, and archaeologist. In 1913 being Assistant Director (1911-15) and Librarian (1906-15) of the British School in Athens Hasluck married Margaret Hardie. As a wedding present, Hardie chose a visit to Konya (ancient Iconium) from the options offered her by her husband, and the couple spent the spring of 1913 there together. Frederick had long been interested in the interplay of Christianity and Islam within the Turkish Empire, and he was gradually to make this a central part of his work. The Haslucks were based in Athens and, over the next four years, had the opportunity to travel widely together in the southwest Balkans. Ragip Hulûsi Özdem, (1893-1943), was a Turkish linguist and politician, who was an early member of the Kemalist modernization movement.
