Christian de Chergé era il priore del monastero trappista di Notre-Dame de l'Atlas in Algeria. Assieme a sei suoi confratelli venne rapito da fondamentalisti islamici il 26 marzo 1996: furono tutti sgozzati il 21 maggio seguente. Ora essi riposano nel piccolo cimitero di Tibhirine, vegliati dagli amici musulmani che essi non avevano voluto abbandonare negli anni più violenti della barbarie in Algeria. Gli scritti dei sette monaci sono dettati da un amore più forte dell'odio, dalla vita più forte della morte: nella loro forza ed essenzialità mostrano che solo chi ha una ragione per morire ha anche una ragione per vivere. Ils étaient sept, sur les hauteurs de l'Atlas, dans la montagne de Médéa, en un lieu de grande solitude du nom de Tibhirine. On ne savait rien ou presque de leur existence jusqu'à cette nuit de mars - celle du 26 au 27 très exactement - où ils furent arrachés à leur monastère. Ces moines faisaient soudain irruption dans la terrible actualité d'une Algérie en tourment. Cinquante-six jours durant, on ne sut rien de leur sort. Le 23 mai, on apprenait leur mort dans d'atroces conditions. Ces moines ont alors bouleversé la conscience du monde, en Algérie bien sûr, mais bien au-delà. En une semaine, a-t-on dit, ils ont réévangélisé la France; avec eux le christianisme a retrouvé ses sources. L'archevêque d'Alger a pu dire que ces hommes étaient l'icône de la présence chrétienne en Algérie. On comprendra mieux pourquoi il importe de se mettre à l'écoute de ces hommes de Dieu qui nous laissent, par leur vie et leurs écrits, l'un des plus grands messages spirituels pour ce temps, dans la ligne du testament de frère Christian, qui mérite de figurer dans l'anthologie des textes chrétiens. Very Good Persian Original decorative dark brown full leather bdg. 44 p. Printed on a special paper with an early 18th century watermark. The Advice by Attâr includes 901 couplet in Persian. Attar Persian poet, Sufi, theoretician of mysticism, and hagiographer, born ca. 540/1145-46 at Nisapur, and died there in 618/1221. His name was Abû ?âmed Mo?ammad b. Abî Bakr Ebrâhîm or, according to Ebn al-Fowatî, b. Sa'd b. Yûsof. ?Attâr and Farîd-al-dîn were his pen-names. It seems that 'Attâr was not well known as a poet in his own lifetime, except at Nisâpûr. 'Awfî, who traveled widely, may have heard about him while staying there , or perhaps from Majd-al-dîn Bagdâdî if this Majd-al-dîn was their common Sufi mentor, though Awfî appears to have only known about Attâr's lyric poetry. Farid al-din 'Attar is one of the most famous spiritual poets of Persia. His works were the inspiration of Rumi and many other mystical poets. 'Attar, along with Sana'i were two of the greatest influences on Rumi in his Sufi views. Rumi has mentioned both of them with the highest esteem several times in his poetry. Rumi praises 'Attar as follows: "Attar roamed the seven cities of love... we are still just in one alley." 'Attar reached an age of well over 80 and died a violent death in the massacre which the Mongols inflicted on Nishapour in April 1221. The world depicted in 'Attar's works reflects the whole evolution of the Sufi movement. The starting point is the idea that the body-bound soul's awaited release and return to its source in the other world can be experienced during the present life in mystic union attainable through inward purification. In explaining his thoughts, 'Attar uses material not only from specifically Sufi sources but also from older ascetic legacies. Apart from his two famous epic masnavi poems 'The Conference of the Birds' and 'The Book of God' he composed a Divan full of powerful, enlightened ghazals and ruba'is. He was Professor of law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Algiers where he was a specialist in the sociology of North Africa (Berbers, Islam). He is also known for his translation work of the great Muslim authors, Al-Ghazali, a theologian who died in 1111 and Tunisian historian Ibn Khaldun, (1332-1406). He was known as a polyglot, spoke several European languages (Dutch, his second mother tongue, English, German, Italian, but also Spanish, Danish, Norwegian ...) and Eastern ones (Arab, Malay ...). After studying law, economics and political science in Paris, Bousquet was appointed in 1927 as a lecturer in economics at the Faculty of Law of Algiers. By this time, he learned Arabic and became interested in Islamic studies while preparing the agrégation in political economy which he passed in 1932. He became a professor and continued his academic career in Algiers for three decades, as an economist and scholar of Islam. The titles of his chair were successively Économie et sociologie nord-africaine (in 1947), to become Histoire comparée des coutumes de l'Islam et économie et sociologie algériennes one year later and finally Droit musulman et sociologie nord-africaine. After the independence of Algeria, Bousquet moved to Bordeaux to complete his academic career: he taught both Muslim sociology and the history of economic thought.
