The ancestors as harmonizers are also capable of giving power to spirits who can, in turn, cleanse the village or tribe from illness, personal misfortune, witchcraft, social tension and a myriad of other problems. The Baule gba gba and kplekple masks (plate 41) are excellent illustrations of this process, as are the Ekpo society masks (plate 55) and figures (plate 56) of the Ibibio people. The ancestors may also function to ward off evil powers, especially those from witchcraft. This practice can be clearly seen among the Kota and Fang people of Gabon whose ancestral reliquaries (plates 60 & 61) are used to drive off malevolent supernatural forces. During a lifetime, the ancestors invest every act, every word, and every thought with their energy. At birth, a child will often be named after a venerated ancestor so that he will acquire extra strength. During initiation rituals the ancestors are present in many forms, helping to prepare the initiate for complete integration within the group. At such times, masks which represent various aspects of ancestral power and wisdom appear in order to instruct initiates. Literally hundreds of masks are used to convey tribal traditions to initiates among the complex secret initiation societies such as the Poro and Sande of Liberia and adjacent areas of Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Ivory Coast (plates 38 & 39). Masks from these areas also function to maintain the traditional social system that was established long ago by the ancestors. Vitally important in life, ancestral intervention becomes especially crucial at death for that is when the deceased moves towards the realm of the ancestors. Translated from the Original Spanish Manuscripts .‎ ‎London: Hakluyt Society / Bedford Press 1901. This is a very good 2 volume hardcover set complete of the 1901 edition. Three quarter cream vellum binding spines with titles in gilt and corners ruled in gilt. This is one of "100 Copies Printed on Large Paper" this note on a small paper strip tipped in after the front endpaper. Also this set has been signed by Basil Thomson to the recipient in 1904. Both volumes signed on the front endpapers. This set was long ago released from a major Ivy League reference library and bears their distinctive bookplates on the inside front cover of each volume. Each bookplate also stamped with the university's red oval withdrawn stamp. No call numbers on the spines. A few condition issues: Volume 1 has a small brown stain to the corner of the vellum right bottom corner and on the first XXV pages of the Introduction. Otherwise clean throughout. Volume 2 has a pink stain that affected the back cover edge between the two vellum corners. The pink stain is also on the edges of the deckled sheets and worst on the margin of the frontispiece where there is also a tan stain line surrounding the pink. Photos will be sent on request. The text blocks of both volumes generally free of foxing but a few pages with very light spotting. All photographs and plates and the 3 tipped in color maps are fine except as stated above. Also 2 folded maps in the rear pocket of Volume 2 these are fine. There are also two small library paper slips at the back of the volumes not check-out slips simply stating for use in the library only. One other small pencil notation from a librarian with details of the gift on the verso of the title-page. All photographs are reproduced in sepia photogravure. 11" high X 8" wide 482 pages. Scarce especially the Large Paper copies signed. These books will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking. . Signed by Author. Hard Cover. Very Good. Ex-Library.
