MADAME TUSSAUD: A LIFE IN WAX.
Toronto: HarperCollins 2006. 352 pp 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "When she died in London at the age of ninety a survivor of one of the most tumultuous epochs in history Madame Tussaud had travelled far from her inauspicious beginnings in Strasbourg as the daughter of a common soldier and a housekeeper. Moving to Paris as a child Marie climbed through the ranks of French society as the protegee of charmismatic showman artist Philippe Curtius and witnessed the French Revolution in all its grisly detail. She survived the Terror and moved to London where she struggled to find a foothold amidst the desperate competition of showmen from all over Europe. Her touring years were studded with drama and danger and twice she nearly lost her life and livelihood - first in a shipwreck and then at the hands of a rampaging mob in the Reform riots of 1831. The core of her exhibition was Revolutionary relics given extra potency by her victim survivor status and the famous claims that she was forced to cast the death masks of Marie Antoinette and other members of the royal family whom she had known personally when employed to teach modelling at Versailles. But did her desire to make a compelling and commercial spectacle of the events unfolding around her extend to moulding her own dramatic story The story of a business empire sculpted out of the ashes of one of history's most turbulent periods reveal a woman who - in exploiting the human fascination with the rich the famous and the infamous - was far ahead of her time." Very small bump at bottom corner of both boards wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds very light rubbing. Short closed tears to attachment and fold of the maps. Light foxing to maps and plate. Occasional minor ink spot. Joints cracked but firm. Hinges firm.

A historically important literary forgery by Charles Bertram an Englishman resident in Denmark this work purported to be a fifteenth century manuscript by an English monk. The correspondence between Bertram and the antiquarian William Stukeley chronicles the acceptance of this manuscript as genuine by the authorities of the day. Its influence can still be seen in many other works for the next 100 years and it is often cited as a second-hand source even today. The naming of the "Pennine Mountains" originated in this text: Bertram popularized the term in competition with Defoe's "English Andes". The text contains Roman routes populated with many fictitious stations and descriptions most especially in Scotland.
Printed for J. White by Richard Taylor and Co. Shoe Lane hardcover

Good. 12mo; xv 309 pages decorated brown cloth lacks rear free endpaper untrimmed and unope ned

Focus on the City of London presenting the city and its people from age to age post-Roman to George II. "Mr. Loftie . first gave the world a reconstruction of the ground - the terrain - of London and its environs before ever a house was errected or an acre cleared. The first chapter of this book - that on Roman London and After - is chiefly due to a study of this map and to realizing what that map means when appliled to the scanty records of Augusta. This map enabled me to recover the years which followed the retreat of the Romans. I cannot allow this chapter to be called a Theory. It is I venture to claim for it nothing less than a Recovery - Preface." Abundantly illustrated. Harper & Brothers hardcover

HarperCollins 2005. Book. Fine. Hardcover. Signed by Authors. First Edition. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Near-new condition. SIGNED/AUTOGRAPHED by author in book front: "To Susan with best wishes - Lita-Rose Betcherman". NO other writing or marks inside book. Nicely illustrated. NO remainder marks or price clippings. Price inside dustcover: $36.95. Number line: 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1. NO tears inside book. Tight spine bright pages. Dustcover is clean and bright shows slight wear NO tears. 384 pages. From Publishers Weekly The lives of Dorothy and Lucy Percy daughters of the early 17th-century earl of Northumberland reflect striking contrasts in early modern marriage. Lucy married a much older rising star of the Jacobean court later Lord Carlisle and had only one short-lived child; centering her life on the royal court she became mistress of the duke of Buckingham and a confidante of Queen Henrietta Maria. Dorothy married the later earl of Leicester raising 12 children in the relative obscurity of the countryside where she managed estates and campaigned for her husband's career. Both sisters were involved in the politics of the Civil War when each precariously balanced family finances and loyalties in order to survive. Canadian historian Betcherman dwells particularly on Lucy's charms as sources praising her are abundant. The author is less generous to Dorothy trusting too much in the sometimes bitter assessments of her husband and offering no hint of whether his taking loans with interest from his wife was unusual. Still personalities fashion intrigue and even parliamentary and military history blend to provide a multifaceted entry into a period not always accessible to general readers of history. Copyright Reed Business Information From Booklist: Canadian historian Betcherman combines historical sociological and cultural insight in this fascinating dual biography of two seventeenth-century British sisters. Born into the nobility Lucy and Dorothy Percy the beautiful daughters of the Earl of Northumberland each made what was considered a good catch in the often-precarious marriage market. Married to a Jacobean courtier Lucy spent much of her life at court wielding power and influence behind the scenes and dazzling a succession of prominent lovers including the notorious Duke of Buckingham. Dorothy's path though much less public was equally compelling. The wife of the Earl of Leicester she raised a huge brood of children managed multiple country estates and lobbied tirelessly on behalf of her diplomat husband. The action really heats up during the English civil war when both sisters made political and personal decisions that profoundly affected the course of their individual and collective family futures.
