EXCISE. GREAT BRITAIN. COMMISSIONERS OF EXCISE.
Instructions for Officers of Excise in the Country.
London: Printed in the year 1778. 5 works bound together in 1 octavo volume 218 x 135 mm. Contemporary half calf and marbled boards remains of paper label to spine initial W.H. stamped in gilt on spine. Ownership inscription to the third title page Wm. H. Carlisle royal coat of arms printed on each title page; several tables included in the text some engraved. Spine ends and corners worn front free endpaper removed. First work lacks pages 7-8 second work with piece torn away from pages 17-18 with slight loss of text; occasional marking in pencil a few pen trials to pastedowns; withal very good. A scarce series of publications for excise men and gaugers all published in 1778 giving guidance and instruction on all matters involving the inspection of premises calculation of duty payable and how to maintain records. The production and distribution of these books of instruction appear to have begun in the early eighteenth century. As might be expected the survival rate seems very small. Excise was first introduced in Great Britain in 1643 taking its example from Holland. ESTC locates copies at the British Library Duke University and the University of California Davis items 2 & 5 only. London: Printed in the year hardcover
