‎[ Scottish tour in early-Victorian period; travel in Scotland in the 1830s ]:‎

‎Early-Victorian tour of Scotland. Manuscript itinerary of a 'Tour through the western part of the midland Counties of Scotland - good or tolerable carriage roads all the way distance to be travelled in all 480 miles or say 500 -'.‎

‎Without place or date. On paper watermarked 'R MUNN & Co 1838'. . 4pp. 4to. Bifolium. In good condition on lightly aged and worn paper and wrapped in a leaf carrying the name 'Miss Sandham' possible recipient. Neatly and closely written out over the whole four pages. Beneath the heading: 'May be easily made out in three weeks'. Almost all of the first three pages are given over to a description of the eighteen stages of the tour with the number of miles and observations beginning and ending at Edinburgh and taking in Stirling Crieff Aberfeldy Killin Inverary Dalmally Oban Ballachulish Fort William Inverness Blair Atholl Perth and a few other places. As an example: 'Ballahulish to Fort William 14 miles Cross the Ferry - follow the side of Loch Linnhe & Loch Eil to Ft. William where is a good Inn. They say there is a better Inn at Corpach where the Steamer starts through the Caledonian Canal. - Shld. be more convenient at least - see if possible part of Glen Nevis.' The second part of the document beginning at the end of the third page begins: 'There is a mail coach from Inverness to Edinburgh in which I wd advise you to travel between Aviemore & Blair Atholl. The rest of this route you had better travel slowly & deliberately in an open Droskey i.e. Droshky . You cannot take too many cloaks & shawls - the waiters are generally slow & the Landlords for the most part greedy. The Beds as a general rule are clean tho' the sheets are often damp if the chambermaids be not well looked after - you may be always sure of good eggs & good milk. & the tea is better than the coffee -'. The text continues with more information concerning inns and food before turning to the weather the 'simple rule' regarding which is 'that if during breakfast the mists rise on the mountain side it will be a fair day if they fall a wet one. Put no confidence in Lowland prognostics even in the landlord respecting the weather . In short always suspect the sincerity of a highland Landlord in an inferior Inn in a well frequented road'. The document ends: 'Andersons is the best guide Book - it has a capital map & much curious information - legends &cc.' Without place or date. [ On paper watermarked 'R MUNN & Co | 1838'. ] unknown‎

‎Edinburgh. 13 February 1836. 3pp. folio. On two loose leaves each with one torn edge. The blank reverse of the second leaf is addressed in manuscript to 'The Bank of Scotland Edinbr' with two postmarks and pencil docketting. There follows a minute of the meeting by 'ALEX. Wright's statement is followed by one by 'WM. MACDONALD Convener' beginning: 'The Committee in reference to the prefixed Minute beg to acquaint you that the Meeting in question was called in consequence of it having come to the knowledge of several gentlemen deeply interested as Creditors in the affairs of the City that parties opposed to the general interest of the Creditors were taking active measures to work upon their fears as to their prospect of ultimate payment with the view of inducing them to accede to the composition proposed by Mr LABOUCHERE.' The third page carries a mandate form which has not been completed. According to a parliamentary report 'In January 1836 the Right honourable H. Labouchere Vice-President of the Board of Trade visited Edinburgh and Leith in compliance with the wishes of Lord Melbourne and the Chancellor of the Exchequer as expressed in their letter to him of 25th September 1835 on the subject of the financial affairs of the city'. ‎[Commercial Bank of Scotland; George Salmond, Writer [solicitor], Glasgow [Procurator-Fiscal of Lanarkshire]; forgery]:‎

‎'Forgery of the Commercial Bank of Scotlands Guinea Note.' Lithographic notice in copperplate handwriting 'given to enable the public to distinguish the forged from the genuine Notes' with illustrations.‎

‎Without place or date but with reference to 'George Salmond Writer Glasgow'. Early nineteenth-century. 2pp. 4to. On leaf untidily torn from an album resulting in a ragged edge with minor loss of text a few parts of words. On aged and chipped paper. The document is headed 'Forgery of the Commercial Bank of Scotlands Guinea Note' and begins: As a few off these Forged Notes have made their appearance in Glasgow
e following directions are given to enable the public to distinguish the forged from the genuine Notes.' A detailed description follows with small illustrations given of the shapes of the letter 'B' in forgery and genuine note with other illustrations of a thistle both with and 'without prickles'. The document ends: 'It is requested that if any of these forged Notes are presented the same and those offering them may be detained and proceeded with according to the Law and that notice may be immediately sent to George Salmond Writer Glasgow who will pay the expenses and liberally remunerate those giving any information which may be of Service or may lead to Conviction of offenders.' No other copy traced either on COPAC or WorldCat. The Scottish guinea note was introduced in 1758 and discontinued in 1828. The book 'Rambling Recollections of Old Glasgow' by 'Nestor' contains a reference to 'Mr. George Salmond long Procurator-Fiscal at Glasgow' who 'kept an album or rather nigrum containing a collection of forged notes with notices of the results to the persons implicated in their forgery or issue. There seldom was a Circuit in Glasgow where there were not several men or women sentenced to death for such crimes and several expiated their offences on the scaffold'. Salmond was Procurator-Fiscal by 1826 so this item would appear to date from before then. Without place or date, but with reference to 'George Salmond, Writer, Glasgow'. Early nineteenth-century. unknown‎

Reliure bradel demi-parchemin (début XXe), titre manuscrit. Intéressant document.‎

‎[Insurance & shipping advertising; Scotland]‎

‎Printed letter sheet sent in 1834 with maritime advertising‎

‎Glasgow 1834. Very good overall. An illustrated advertising sheet with 3 columns of Glasgow shipping advertisements which serves as writing paper for a half penny hand written letter. The letter is from Gilkison & Brown to Messrs. Davidson & Syme lawyers and comments that there are no vessels from Clyde to New York at present "nor will there be any for some weeks". It quotes the cabin and steerage passage rates also.

Gilkison & Brown were maritime agents for the Canada Company in Glasgow; they acted as ship and insurance brokers and commission agents. Emigration from Scotland to Canada and other destinations was in response to tenant congestion and starvation as well as land owner bankruptcy. In the 1830s 20000 highlanders emigrated to Canada.

The maritime advertising printed in 3 columns is for: the Royal Exchange Assurance of London; individual ads for 10 ships all out of Glasgow and bound for ports all over the world including New York; Calcutta; Trinidad; the Cape of Good Hope; Trieste Italy Genoa Kingston Jamaica and Honduras; and St. Thomas. Each ad is accompanied with an engraved sailing ship.

The letter is addressed to Messrs. Davidson & Syme Charlotte Street Edinburgh and franked also with a stamped 24 Oct 1834. "COCLK PM" is stamped in 2 sections due to the letter fold.

15 3/4 x 9 3/4"; folds to 7 7/8 x 9 3/4". Wax seal caused small hole affecting some words in manuscript text.

A lovely example of a used letter sheet. unknown‎

‎[Missouri]. [Scotland]. Ballingall George D.‎

‎Manuscript Diary Kept by Scottish Businessman George D. Ballingall During a Visit to Missouri in the Early 1890s‎

‎Various locations in Missouri: May to June 1891. Very good. 54pp. rectos only. Small quarto. Contemporary limp dark brown leather thin gilt borders and gilt lining on spine. Minor wear spine head a bit tender. Clean internally. An interesting collection of observations on American business politics and more from the standpoint of a Scottish lawyer and businessman working in the American Midwest in 1891. According to an 1891 Scottish directory George D. Ballingall was one of three partners in Fraser Stodart and Ballingall of 16 Castle Street in Edinburgh which matches the address he records on the front free endpaper of the present diary. Ballingall and his partners were managing secretaries for a few companies including the Missouri Land and Live Stock Company Limited which provides easy justification for why he was visiting Missouri here. Ballingall himself is listed in the same directory as a member of the Society of Writers to Her Majesty's Signet a private society of notable Scottish solicitors.

The present diary covers Ballingall's time in various locations in Missouri in May and June 1891. He discusses politics real estate farming mining prospects and most intensely the law. He records his experiences in St. Louis Joplin Pierce City and other locations visiting mines taking meetings and providing consultations gathering his own legal advice and more. Ballingall devotes the last several pages of the diary to various legal acts in the Missouri legislature and ponders how they will affect his business interests in the state the affairs of corporations foreign reporting requirements and so forth. He also discusses the evergreen topic involving the struggle between federal and state powers. He concludes by discussing how Missouri farmers organized as did the farmers in Kansas and how this new faction of the "people's party" controls the legislature now. May to June unknown‎

‎[Scotland – History of Higher Education – Ontario – Farming] Macfarlane, Alexander; Macfarlane, James‎

‎Archive of Letters with Some Photographs of Scottish-Canadian Farmer James Macfarlane and His Nephew Dr. Alexander Macfarlane With Much Concerning Farming in Ontario and the Founding of the University of Dundee‎

‎Dover and Chatham Ontario; Edinburgh and Blairgowrie Scotland 1903. Seventy-eight pieces: seven 2.5 x 4†photographs mounted on heavy cardstock; with seventeen letters from Alexander to James Macfarlane fifty-two from James to Alexander Macfarlane and two from others to Alexander Macfarlane. Fourteen from 1853–1882; eleven from 1883–1885; thirteen from 1886; twelve from 1887; thirteen from 1888; eight from 1889–1903. Sorted chronologically. Envelopes good to very good; letters generally near fine. Alexander Macfarlane 1851–1913 was a Scottish physicist mathematician and logician. He earned a D.Sc. from the University of Edinburgh in 1878; following this he would teach at the University of St. Andrews the University of Edinburgh the University of Texas at Austin and Lehigh University. Macfarlane earned a number of accolades including elections to many scientific and mathematical societies and an honorary doctorate from the University of Michigan. After his retirement in 1894 Alexander Macfarlane moved to a farm in Ontario left to him by his uncle James who is his correspondent herein. Much less is known about James Macfarlane; born in Scotland in 1806 he immigrated to North America by way of New York in 1835. He purchased land in Dover Township now Chatham Ontario in 1853 and was elected the town’s reeve in 1879. At the time of this correspondence he was a farmer by occupation. The photographs in the collection—portraits of unknown individuals—are likely his as they are from photography studios in the Brantford and Toronto area and seem to date from before Alexander Macfarlane’s arrival in the colony.

James Macfarlane’s letters to his nephew mainly written between 1886 and 1889 give detailed descriptions of farm life and logistics in 19th-century Ontario. He grew corn wheat beans clover and hay raised pigs and cows and kept a number of workhorses alongside a few seasonal employees. The elder Macfarlane describes the state of his crops the health of his animals and especially his finances taxes and employees’ wages; he writes of “a constant fear of running aground†March 17 1887. However he also occasionally discusses academic or political affairs – it is unclear what education Macfarlane had or what political experience besides his reeveship but from his writing it seems not insignificant. One prohibition-related incident in 1887 especially stands out:

“During the night between last Saturday & Sunday there was a dynamite explosion in front of the handsome residence of H. Cummings Esq. of Chatham – damage but no one hurt. It is believed it was the doing of the Chatham grogocracy – Mr. C. favours prohibition – Tories do notâ€. August 10 1887

This letter dates the incident to late on the 6th or early on the 7th of August 1887; we do not find the explosion mentioned in local newspapers from the time.

Alexander Macfarlane’s letters which comprise most of the earlier letters in the group focus on his burgeoning academic career. In 1882 when the majority of his letters were written he had applied and was waiting to hear about a position as Chair of Mathematics at University College Dundee now the University of Dundee which was then just being formed. Besides occasional discussions of work in which he is currently engaged Macfarlane writes about his tactics for bettering his chances at the Chair; for example:

“I have just received some information which indicates that I shall have an excellent chance of being successful. Rev. Mr. Tait who was our minister before he left Blairgowrie for Newport opposite Dundee happens to be a very intimate friend of the founder of the College Miss Baxter of Balgavies. I saw from the first that it would be important to secure his cooperation; he has been very active in his support. Recently he was staying at Balgavies and when the College was discussed he spoke highly in my favour. He has persuaded Miss Baxter to take some active steps in my favour. Copies of all the applications etc. are sent to her which seems to indicate that a proposed appointment is submitted to her for approval.†September 19 1882

The wait is difficult for Macfarlane and he frequently comments with displeasure on related workplace politics. For instance he is upset by the choice of William Peterson—whom he describes as “a fop†October 3 1882—for Principal of the new university:

“Peterson had this advantage that many of the electors had a bias in favour of a Classical man for the office of Principal. He got only a second class at Oxford. I say nothing on the subject but I have heard others express an opinion that a mistake has been made.†August 13 1882

And later:

“Most people express themselves as greatly surprised at the choice the Dundee Council made of a Principal. My theory of the matter is that Professor Donaldson with the view of furthering his own candidature wished to ingratiate himself with Professor Sellars after he saw that Mr Porter would not be accepted by the Council. I feel that the Council may do anything as they seem nearly incapable of forming an independent opinion.†September 27 1882

When he does not receive the Chair Macfarlane shares his thoughts with his uncle about the state of Scottish Universities especially that they “have no reputation for scholarship†and that the Scottish people “need not expect learning to flourish at their Universities†November 23 1882.

Of course Macfarlane’s career turned out fine despite this setback; in 1895 he tells James not unfairly that “I am considered one of the foremost thinkers of the day in the field of exact science†March 21.

Overall a look at the lives and activities of an uncle and nephew with extremely different careers; of interest both to scholars of Ontario history and farming and to historians of science and higher education. unknown‎
