‎James Bryce‎

‎The American Commonwealth‎

‎London and New York, MacMillan, 1888. Three volumes bound in full vellum leather. First edition. Three delicately bound 155 x 220 mm (6" x 8.5") volumes of (xxxii) 592, 683 and 699 pp. Full caramel vellum leather, intricately ornated spines with 5 nerves, gilded frames and boxes containing lush greenery-inspired patterns and fleurons, all gilded, double titlepiece with the book title, author's name and volume Roman number on dark red and anthracite backgrounds, gilded floral frieze on the tails. Covers with double gilded frames and tiny corner flowers. All fore-edges colored in a mostly blue polychromia with marbled red veins. Gilded roulette work on the edges of the covers and pastedowns, colored endpapers. Unidentified ex-libris on the first pastedown bearing the motto "Ab Multis Ad Unum." With an unfolding map of "The Growth of the United States" at the beginning of the first volume. Table of contents at the beginning and index at the end of each volume. First volume: The National Government. Preface. Second volume: The State Government and the Party System. Third volume: Public Opinion, Illustrations and Reflections, Social Institutions. This book is not an encyclopaedia of the institutions of the American Republic, even though it may look like it is. Actually, James Bryce talks about the real workings of the institutions: parties, bosses, the spoil system and the public opinion. It shows an America already different from what the mere Constitution says. He compares the British monarchy with the American federal republic, the democratic versus lord elites and the centralization vs local power dynamics. By doing so, James Bryce predates the sociology of Robert Mitchels and Max Weber while maintaining the magnitude and depth of a true treatise. An analytical tour de force, worthy of a serious Americana collection.‎

‎Light rubbing on some of the edges, the hinge of the 1st volume front cover is a bit frail, robust binding, interior is clean and in very good condition. A splendid set in its original intricate binding.‎

‎JAMES (Henry).‎

‎The Story of Captain The Horse with the Human Brain‎

‎Pasadena CA: Radiant Life Press 1917. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. 8vo pp. 48 7 b/w plates in original stapled pictorial wrappers. Some chipping and tiny tears to wrappers;contents clean. James first saw Captain a performing horse owned by W.A. Sigsbee of Chicago at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. Amazed by the horse's apparent ability to count add and subtract; play "Nearer My God to Thee" on the chimes; and perform a variety of tricks in response to verbal commands James resolved to learn more about the horse and his trainer. Here their story is told in full from Captain's point of view "There are some people who think I don't like to give performances. I don't know why except that I do get tired a little once in a while and sometimes my master wants me to be quiet and good when I feel frisky and frolicsome and want to kick up my heels. I always feel better the busier I am." and Sigsbee has his say as well. After conducting his own "scientific investigation" of Captain's abilities James concludes that there is no explicit trickery involved in their show but that the horse may pick up on cues of which the audience--and likely even the trainer--is unaware. This leads to his more general observation that there is still much to learn about animal intelligence. "There is too much assumption in human beings about most things animal instinct and human reason not excluded. What I wish to protest against with emphasis and vigor is the assumption that we know all there is to know about intelligence that we know the limits Nature herself has placed upon its development and that all efforts to foster further development are useless. I affirm that we do not know; that we have never as yet even tried to know; and that until men with loving devoted sympathetic singleness of heart and purpose seek to develop all there is in the mentality of all the lower animals dogs cats deer as well as horses shall we begin to have a real foundation for our assumptions upon the subject." ‎The Great Road: The Building of the Baltimore and Ohio the Nation's First Railroad 1828-1853‎

‎Stanford CA: Stanford University Press 1993. 472pp/illus/maps. Richly illustrated account of the planning and building of the most important and influential early American railroad the Baltimore and Ohio is an essential contribution not only to railyway history but also to the broader history of the development of the United States in the first half of the nineteenth century. There was no precedent for the building of the B&O. The construction of the 380-mile line from Baltimore to the Ohio River over a period of 25 years is an epic story of astute planning and innovative engineering that overcame many formidable obstacles notably the arduous traversing of 200 miles of mountain wilderness. Its successful inauguration provided a spur to internal improvements throughout the United States. Railroads and certainly the B&O epitomized progress not only in the development and extension of the Western frontier but in the revelation that personal travel and the delivery of freight could be dramatically faster better and cheaper. Clean no marks. 1st Edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Stanford University Press Hardcover‎
