"California Redwood Park Commissioners put forth this booklet for the double purpose of conveying to the people of the State a better knowledge and a keener appreciation of the State's forest reservation and also to impress upon the people the importance of securing for State ownership the entire area of the Big Basin." from Wikipedia and "At the time logging of the coast redwoods was moving at a frantic pace to meet the demand for redwood lumber to build the new towns and cities of a booming California. Concerned that the redwood trees of the Santa Cruz Mountains would be lost forever Hill with the help of Stanford University's President David Starr Jordan convened a meeting of scientists and other influential people at the Stanford University Library to discuss what could be done to protect the redwoods. At this meeting a surveying committee was appointed headed by Hill and Carrie Stevens Walter from the San Jose Woman's Club. They went camping along the banks of Sempervirens Creek in what is now Big Basin Redwoods State Park and then there formed the Sempervirens Club. The Club committed to lobby for the protection of the redwoods and for the creation of a public park at Big Basin. They passed a hat collected $32 to finance their efforts and launched a fundraising and lobbying campaign to achieve their goal. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have bumping rubbing and thin strips of cloth missing from both spine ends and corners. The text pages are generally clean and bright though there are a few spots of foxing throughout. There is a former owner's name and city inked on the first free page. Several sections have pulled and the string binding is a bit loose. "Taylor imitated and parodied the writings of various poets in Diversions of the Echo Club London 1873; Boston 1876. In 1874 Taylor traveled to Iceland to report for the Tribune on the one thousandth anniversary of the first European settlement there. During March 1878 the U. S. Senate confirmed his appointment as United States Minister to Prussia. Mark Twain who traveled to Europe on the same ship was envious of Taylor's command of German. Taylor's travel writings were widely quoted by congressmen seeking to defend racial discrimination. Richard Townshend D-IL quoted passages from Taylor such as "the Chinese are morally the most debased people on the face of the earth" and "A Chinese city is the greatest of all abominations." This book is a compilation of his articles two of which are about the invasion of the North by Jubal Early in June & July 1864 when Early approached Washington the period during which the letter tipped in was written. Covers show minor edge wear previous owner has taped a short bibliography of the author's books and biographical information to the front paste-down. Also tipped in is a visitor card signed by the author's wife. No marks in book hinges cracking but binding solid. Covers clean with very minor edge wear. Book condition VG. S. C. The program is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some beginning bumping and rubbing. The text pages are clean and bright. This program is illustrated throughout with early colored photographs in cluding the front cover hand colored on the plates and then copied. The theme for the 6th annual event was "Historical Events" and it included more than 40 floral covered floats. The photographs include a number of views of the floral floats some local sites the redwoods Mission Santa Clara and more. "Roses have provided an enduring theme for San José throughout its history. The first Carnival of Roses was held in 1896 went on for four days and featured 23-year-old Lillian Rea as the first Rose Queen. These celebrations predated the creation of the Municipal Rose Garden 1931. In honor of President McKinley’s visit in 1901 the City of San José planned a rose-themed parade along The Alameda and every float was covered with roses. The Rose Carnival became Fiesta de Las Rosas in 1926. During the years of the Fiesta de Las Rosas schoolyards and street corners alike were decorated with roses flags and banners. A committee planted thousands of rose bushes giving meaning to the parade theme “Santa Clara Valley the Rose Garden of the World. ” At its peak the parade boasted 87 floats 10 bands 200 mounted riders and a variety of decorated cars. A quarter million spectators were attracted to this “Grand Floral Parade ” which started at the Mission Santa Clara marched down The Alameda and ended in San José. The daughter of one of Abraham Lincoln's law partners and his presidential bodyguard Ward Hill Lamon 1828-93 she pieced together and edited her father's book "Recollections of Abraham Lincoln 1847-1865" Chicago 1895; a bawdy and not particularly popular companion to the president Lamon authored it was actually ghostwritten an 1872 "Life of Abraham Lincoln" that's considered the first debunking biography of the president. PS 8½" X 11" n.p. 1945 November 4. Very good. Small glue stain at upper right well away from image. This most unusual PS does not depict Teillard herself but rather is a thermofax copy of a 3½" X 3½" portrait of a young Ward Hill Lamon centered and with large margins. Early head-and-shoulders portrait showing a youthful Lamon with long curly hair and flowing goatee. On the ample lower margin his daughter inscribes it big and bold: "With regards of / Dorothy Lamon Teillard / November 4 1945." Though written while well into her 80s Teillard's script is fluid and attractive. A quite uncommon autograph in an unusual form. unknown

By the turn of the 20th century Bell American Telephone & Telegraph was ascendant in the telephone sphere and "The Telegraph Combination" Western Union combined with the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph Companies dominated the realm of telegraphy. Enter the small scrappy independent telephone companies trying to eke out a corner of the market for themselves. One of these was Telepost a company possessing superior technology allowing for far faster and far cheaper telegraphic transmissions. Based on the inventions of American electrical engineer Patrick B. Delany their automatic telegraph system was capable of transmitting and recording 3000 words a minute over a single wire. The company made a brave stand with an impressive marketing campaign in the pages of Popular Mechanics the Journal of Telephony and other journals both high-brow and low. This little pamphlet bravely sallies forth offering short biographies of its accomplished and highly respectable trustees providing glowing testimonials to the speed and economy of their services anointing Telepost "The People's Telegraph" and declaring "The Combination cannot get the Telepost Company."
