Naval Documents related to the Quasi-War Between the United States and France; Naval Operations from November 1798 to March 1799
Washington D.C.: United States Government Printing Office 1935. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Fair. vii 3 624 2 pages. Bookplate of the noted naval authority John Lyman inside front cover. Some endpaper and page discoloration and soiling. Two small holes bookworm from rear board until near the beginning of the index. The book contains a Preface as well as 8 black and white illustrations of U.S. Navy officers and U.S. Navy ships and two folding maps. Abbreviation Index to Sources. The book also contains an index from page 545 to 624. This volume is the second of a projected series of early documentary material dealing with American naval history. It covers naval operations from 1 November 1798 to 31 March 1799 inclusive during the Quasi-War with France 1798-1801. The book also contains data concerning over three hundred American armed merchant vessels which participated in the war during the year 1798 taken from such sources as are available the accuracy of which cannot be vouched for in all cases. Throughout the work it has been the endeavor to make the text of the printed document identical with the original source. Spelling punctuation abbreviation etc. are reproduced as they are found in the originals or in the copies on file. The Quasi-War was an undeclared war fought from 1798 to 1800 between the United States and France. Most of the fighting took place in the Caribbean and off the Atlantic coastline of the United States. The war originated in disputes over the application of the 1778 treaties of Alliance and Commerce between the two countries. France then engaged in the 1792-1797 War of the First Coalition which included Great Britain viewed the 1794 Jay Treaty between the United States and Britain as incompatible with those treaties and retaliated by seizing American ships trading with Britain. The United States responded by suspending repayment of French loans from the American Revolutionary War. When diplomatic negotiations culminating in the XYZ Affair failed to resolve the issue French privateers began attacking merchant ships in American waters. On July 7 1798 Congress authorized the use of military force against France and reestablished the United States Navy. United States Marines were also reestablished to defend and board warships as well as land troops if needed. The United States informally cooperated with Britain chiefly in allowing merchant ships to join each other's convoys. Likewise France cooperated with Spain on a minor scale. President John Adams continued diplomatic efforts to resolve underlying issues; this coincided with Napoleon taking power in France who for various reasons was keen to agree to terms. This led to the Convention of 1800 which ended the war. United States Government Printing Office hardcover

Various paginations approximately 175 pages illustrations fold-out. Front cover is illustrated and has wear and soiling. Writing on spine area. This disseminates the revised first aid procedure for nerve agent poisoning and was considered critical in view of the recent replacement of nerve agent antidote with atropine. This manual tells how units of the United States Army can use the principles and techniques of nuclear biological and chemical NBC defense in the conduct of combat operations. The probability that the U.S. Army will be outnumbered at the start of any future war makes it essential that every unit gain the highest level of survival proficiency and basic operational skills. The concepts of training to fight and factually fighting under NBC conditions are the same. This manual services two purposes. It provides doctrine and guidance for the commander and his staff in NBC defense an d it provides the technical information necessary for chemical personnel and other personnel assigned NBC defense duties to evaluate NBC situations and advise their commander. NBC Warning and Reporting System; Graphic Training Aid GTS3-6-3
W: U. S. Department of the Army 1985. Supersedes GTA 3-6-2 June 1975. Ephemera. Good. Single sheet printed on both sides 10 inches by 12 inches. Folded and re-folded so that there are 16 panels eight on each side. Two panels are for notes and is almost completely blank space. Illustrations. Pencil erasure residue on title panel. The primary means of warning units of an actual or predicted CB hazard is the NBC Warning and Reporting system NBCWRS. It is a key in limiting the effects of attacks. The NBCWRS allows units to determine required protective measures and plan operations. Units take action depending on the mission and type of hazard present. Affected units alter plans to avoid the hazard. The units can upgrade protective measures and occupy or cross the hazard area. The NBCWRS consists of six reports. Each is standardized. The six standard reports are- NBC 1-Initial report used for passing basic data compiled at unit level. NBC 2-Report used for passing evaluated data. NBC 3-Report used for immediate warning of predicted contamination and hazard areas. NBC 4-Report used for passing monitoring and survey results. NBC 5-Report used for passing information on areas of actual contamination. NBC 6-Report used for passing detailed information on chemical or biological attacks. The reports use standard formats. The warning and reporting system is based on a code letter system. NBC has been updated to be described as Chemical biological radiological and nuclear defense CBRN defense or CBRNE defense is protective measures taken in situations in which chemical biological radiological or nuclear warfare including terrorism hazards may be present. CBRN defense consists of CBRN passive protection contamination avoidance and CBRN mitigation. A CBRN incident differs from a hazardous material incident in both scope i.e. CBRN can be a mass casualty situation and intent. CBRN incidents are responded to under the assumption that they are intentional and malicious; evidence preservation and perpetrator apprehension are of greater concern than with HAZMAT incidents. This ephemeral training aid was distributed to US Army Training and Audio-visual Support Centers TASC. Distribution was restricted because it contained technical or operational information that was for official government use only. Distribution was limited to US government agencies. Request for release outside the US government needed to be made to HQ TRADOC Fort Monroe Virginia. Due to its age and advances in technical and operational information it is understood that this distribution restriction no longer applies. U. S. Department of the Army unknown

UNITED STATES, General Land Office - C ROESER, Principal Draughtsman, GLO G L O
Nevada
Washington D.C.: General Land Office printed in New York by Julius Bien lithographer 1879. Color-lithographed map. A very detailed colour-coded map of Nevada showing towns rivers roads railroads among other landmarks.

The General Land Office was founded in 1812 as an independent government agency responsible for the surveying and disposition of land in the public domain. Prior to the Civil War much of the attention of the GLO was fixed on the settlement of such land east of the Mississippi which had resulted from military bounties and cessations by the original thirteen states. The end of the Civil War the Homestead Act the completion of the Trans-Continental Railroad and the military campaigns against Native Americans in the West with resulting treaties that "transferred" land ownership to the United States together engendered an incredible increase in westward settlement and expansion. Newly-admitted states and newly-created territories west of the Mississippi were primed for settlement. Between 1866 and 1876 the GLO surveyed over 200000000 acres of land in the public domain for settlement in New Mexico Idaho Dakota Nebraska Montana Colorado Wyoming and elsewhere. As the official surveyors of these remote areas and with access to military information the maps of the General Land Office were far and away the most accurate and detailed of the western states and territories published to that time. Indeed these large-scale official maps became the basis for future maps of those regions by commercial cartographers. In 1876 the GLO headed by S.S. Burdett published an atlas containing 18 maps on 19 sheets California being on two sheets showing the regions of the United States with newly surveyed and plotted public lands. Although the GLO had issued individual maps of the United States to accompany their annual report in 1866 and 1868 the 1876 Geographical and Political Atlas of the States and Territories sometimes referred to as The Centennial Atlas was the first atlas to be published by the department. The incredible growth of settlement in the west coupled with new exploration and surveying in the short time following the 1876 atlas engendered a second atlas to be published by the General Land Office between 1878 and 1879 i.e. where the present example is from. Like the Centennial Atlas the maps were composed by the chief draughtsman in the GLO Charles Roeser Jr. The maps were done on a large scale and are consequently very detailed. Chromolithographed by Julius Bien each map is colour coded to clearly depict land plotted for settlement the locations of the general land offices Indian territories county divisions towns rivers roads railroads etc. Furthermore like The Centennial Atlas the Atlas of the States and Territories over which Land Surveys have been Extended was produced for official purposes and distributed to members of Congress government agencies each land office the post office the railroads and other large entities and was not available for public distribution. The limited distribution of this atlas coupled with its large size accounts for its great rarity today; very few copies are known to be in private hands and no copies were in the famed collections of Rumsey Streeter or Graff.

Phillips Atlases 1405. UNITED STATES
New Commercial Railroad Map of the United States.
Chicago: Rand McNally & Co. 1899. First edition of this colour map of the continental United States. It shows all 49 states and territories at the time excluding Alaska and Hawaii including the Indian Territory in modern-day Oklahoma and the network of railways connecting them. We have traced only one institutional copy in the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Rand McNally started in 1856 as a printing shop in Chicago with their main client being the Tribune later the Chicago Tribune. Over time they expanded into tickets and timetables for the railroad industry then dictionaries and newspapers and finally maps. Their first map appeared in December 1872 and they continued to regularly update and publish new editions. This present map dates from 1899 in the aftermath of the panic of 1893 and the subsequent railroad consolidation by the likes of J. P. Morgan. This copy was sold in the United Kingdom by Edward Stanford Geographer to the Queen and a renowned map dealer. His ticket can be found on the lower right corner of the map and his yellow label on the slipcase. He also added yellow covers lettered with his prospectus to the map verso. Large colour lithograph map 1028 x 1463 mm folding to 204 x 133 mm dissected into 55 panels linen-backed yellow card covers. Housed in the publisher's brown card slipcase yellow label to front lettered in black. Some cities circled in contemporary blue crayon. Map lightly creased; case rubbed at edges a few small white splotches and scratches: a very good copy. unknown
