1887. Very Good . 1 printed commission form naming Joseph H. LeFevre a notary public dated 30 March 1887 and signed by Gov. James A. Beaver and Charles W. Stone Secretary of Pennsylvania. the form is filled in in an attractive hand with a large gilt seal of Pennsylvania. Attached is a small form indicating that it was recorded in Adams Co. on 1 April 1887 with a smaller gilt seal of the Adams Co. Recorder's Office and the signature of the county recorder I. S. Stonesifer. Israel S. Stonesifer 1839-1928 served in the 165th Pennsylvania Infantry during the Civil War. In addition to serving as county recorder he was assistant superintendent of Gettysburg National Military Park. James A. Beaver 1837-1914 served during the Civil War as lt. col. of the 45th Pa. volunteers and then as colonel of the 148th Pa. volunteers being wounded several times and eventually losing a leg. He served as governor of Pennsylvania from 1887 to 1891 and from 1895 to his death in 1914 sat on the state Superior Court. Charles W. Stone 1843-1912 was in the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives 1870-1871; in the Pennsylvania State Senate 1877-1878; Lieut. Gov. 1879-1883; and was secretary of Pennsylvania 1887-1890 when he was elected to represent the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. In Very Good Condition: upper edge slightly rubbed and just starting to separate at folds; otherwise clean and solid. unknown

Undated possibly late 1850s. Light foxing. A song descrying the ineffectiveness of Philadelphia's city council and the overzealous use of the police by the Mayor particularly in enforcement of the blue laws prohibiting the sale of alcohol on Sundays. New blue laws were passed in Philadelphia in 1855 and both Mayor Robert T. Conrad in office 1854-1856 and Mayor Richard Vaux in office 1856-1858 were known for their close association with the police and zealous enforcement of outdated laws. Based on the publisher's address this song would have been published no earlier than 1858 but we suspect it is from right around that time. The word "Shanghai" here seems to suggest that the people of Philadelphia are being taken for a ride. We find only one holding of this song in OCLC but there are several holdings for another song with the same title from which this one may have been appropriated published in 1855. New blue laws were passed in Philadelphia in 1855 and both Mayor Robert T. Conrad in office 1854-1856 and Mayor Richard Vaux in office 1856-1858 were known for their close association with the police and zealous enforcement of outdated laws. Based on the publisher's address this song would have been published no earlier than 1858 but we suspect it is from right around that time. The word "Shanghai" here seems to suggest that the people of Philadelphia are being taken for a ride. We find only one holding of this song in OCLC but there are several holdings for another song with the same title from which this one may have been appropriated published in 1855. Most of the newspaper concerns the murder of Winfield Scott Goss by William Udderzook following their involvement in insurance fraud. Udderzook's conviction rested on the novel use of a photograph to establish the identify of the victim. The newspaper recounts the details of the case as well as the execution of Udderzook. Also contains local news and advertisements. Very scarce. Bound with two metal screws with label for Buchan Patent Lock Washers inside of rear cover. Very Good lacking a 2" patch of cloth rear cover at spine edge wear and light soiling. Published 1929 Mar. 1 "This book correct to date as shown below" with additional dates in ink of 1930 Apr. 1 and 1930 July 1. Several pages with ink corrections deletions and additions. Manuscript in pencil verso of initial page. Two names in manuscript ink L.E. Bower 1/4/40 and C. A. Pennington 8/24. These books were a central reference for operational planning maintenance and engineering. The detailed information helped management ensure efficiency safety and standardization across their fleet. The C.C.C. & St. Louis Railway commonly known as the "Big Four Railroad" was formed on June 30 1889 through the merger of several smaller lines. It operated in affiliation with the New York Central Railroad system which fully leased it by 1930 making this one of the last fully Big Four publications. RARE not found at OCLC. . Disasters - Floods Collection of Thirteen Real Photo Postcards of the Shelbyville Indiana Flood of 1913
Shelbyville Indiana: No Publisher 1913. RARE collection of 13 real photo postcards depicting the historic March 25 1913 flood of the Big and Little Blue Rivers in Shelbyville Indiana still Indiana's worst flood on record. Caused by thick winter snows followed by 2 months of heavy rains that culminated in the deluge of March 25 compared by some locals to a waterspout. The flood washed out bridges and culverts including the iron bridge over the Flat Rock River and caused a train wreck at nearby St. Paul pictured in two of the postcards. While over 20% of the population was made homeless no lives were lost. It took a week before the first train could arrive and a month before the inter-urban could return. Even the Mayor of Chicago offered to send help. "Shelbyville Indiana Flood of 1913" Ron Hamilton Shelby County Indiana Historian. The post cards are Near Fine 7 cards with the manuscript names of two local prior owners and some brief inked descriptions to versos. Consists of 18 blank leaves separated by tissue guards. Faint penciled name possibly McSully on front cover dated Oct. 23 1875. One page also has inscription including name that might be McSully. Final page has address: 105 Third St. Reading Pa. The owner used the book to study drawing. Each page contains work in pencil beginning with basic shapes and letters and concluding with several pages of landscapes and other scenes. From the 8th leaf onward they are dated from April to June 1876 and then 2 from Nov. possibly 1879. In Good Condition: remains of marbled paper along spine possible old repair; cover is soiled; loss at edges; lacking final leaf; chipping to edges of tissue paper; otherwise clean and solid. paperback
