MacGregor loyal son of Oregon Oswald Garrison Villard November 4 1938." A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy but complete and sturdy. Two volumes bound in burgundy cloth over boards still-legible gilt lettering to spines. Rubbing to scuffing of spine heads and feet edges and with slight bleed-through of spine of one volume unobtrusive. Half-splitting to half-title else bindings are tight interiors clear. Library-reinforcing tape white at three of the four gutters. Bumping to spine heads and feet. Frontis portrait of Henry Villard in both volumes in duotone tissue-protected. Villard the Younger was an American journalist and editor of the New York Evening Post and with left-wing mother Fanny Villard also a civil rights activist a founding member of the N.A.A.C.P. Before turning right-wing over the years he had written long ago to then President Woodrow Wilson "to protest his administration's racial segregation of federal offices in Washington D.C." Wikipedia. This copy thus a Presentation Copy. His father Henry Villard was "an American newspaper correspondent who had been an immigrant from Germany and Fanny Garrison Villard his mother daughter of abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison. Fanny Villard was a suffragist and one of the founders of the Women's Peace Movement" Wikipedia. It was probably his father's investments in railroads and then newspapers that brought him into the fold.
