‎Invitations.‎

‎Minneapolis & Saint Paul: Ampersand Club 1972. A collection of approximately 125 Ampersand Club invitations ranging in size from large folio to 16mo all but a handful printed letterpress by such printers as: Jim Eckman Norm Fritzberg Phil Gallo Allan Kornblum Gerry Lange Paul Maravelas Russell Maret Paulette Myers-Rich Will Powers Dave Rathman Gaylord Schanilec Wilbur "Chip" Schilling Richard Stevens Emily Mason Strayer Michael Tarachow Emerson Wulling and certainly many others inviting Ampersanders to talks lectures and/or hostings by: the Hon. Governor Elmer L. Andersen Harriet Bart Betty Bright Clifford Burke Greg Campbell Steve Clay Pat Coleman Amanda Degener Scott Helmes Johathan E. Hill Jerry Farrell Maria Fredericks Rosemary Furtak Molly & John Harris Michael Hancher Bob Jackson Gunnar Kaldewey Daniel Kelm Stuart Klipper Abe Lerner Harry Lerner Austin McLean Jack Parker Robin Price Maggie Ragnow John & Rose Randle Jeff Rathermel Karen Runyon Dale Schwie Ken Storm Jr. Claire Van Vliet Jeff Weber Jody Williams as well as the aforementioned Gallo Powers Maravelas Maret Powers Rathman Schanilec Schilling and the rest of the gang. The Ampersand Club has a long tradition of providing letterpress invitations to its events which occur more or less monthly September through April and concluding with an annual dinner meeting in May. Tradition holds that printers print anonymously so the names of presses and printers are not included in the invitation copy. Over the years Gallo has printed no fewer than 50 a dozen or so are included here. In his notes for his own Hermetic Press archive Gallo notes: "The invitations tend toward the decorative this most particularly with the early ones when there was a camaraderie of competitiveness among the printers: Gerald Lange Michael Tarachow Norm Fritzberg Allan Kornblum and Gaylord Schanilec. Consequently these invitations display a wide range of handset foundry typefaces designed not only to be sparkling works but to spark typographic conversations." While this collection is a long way from being complete and many as yet undetermined as to printer or press this offering of 125 is by far the largest group of such invitations ever to come on the market.

Ampersand Club unknown books‎

‎Klondike Gold" and 24 Other Pieces of Sheet Music Published by William Randolph Hearst in the San Francisco Examiner 1896-1905‎

‎Softcover. Very good. Collection of 25 pieces of sheet music issued as Sunday supplements to the San Francisco Examiner each 4 pp 14 x 10.5 inches printed on thick newsprint. All with the name "R. James" in ink on the cover a few with short tears at margins or light soiling; very good overall. Between 1895 and 1911 William Randolph Hearst published more than 650 pieces of sheet music in his newspapers. Most pieces were reprints of recent popular songs but each was given new cover illustration printed in color often including a photograph of the performer who popularized the piece. Although primarily intended to help sell newspapers the inclusion of sheet music and the selection of songs included also reflected Hearst's personal interest in vaudeville burlesque musical theater and other popular forms of entertainment. Other papers had begun publishing sheet music in the late nineteenth century but Hearst was only newspaper publisher to commission new songs. Among these commissions was "Klondike Gold" published in 1898 and included in this collection. The song warns of the perils freezing starvation of following the stampede of hopeful men and women seeking their fortunes in the Yukon. Also included here is "Battle Hymn Written by the Mikado of Japan" another original piece which purports to have been "sung by the Japanese armies on the battle fields." Some of the other reprinted pieces also claim "ethnic" or international themes -- such as "Sonoma A Mexican Serenade" and "O Love" described as a "Famous Filipino Serenade brought from Manila by the Leader of the First California Volunteer Band." There are also love songs comic songs and pieces from musical theater. A rather unexceptional song called "At the Bottom of the Hill" is said to be the "first copyrighted song of the new century." In all an interesting collection reflecting popular musical taste at the turn of the twentieth century. unknown books‎

‎Lake Shastina Sales Map Tract No. 1000-7-2‎

‎Undated likely mid-1970s. 34 x 25-inch map showing hundreds of small lots for sale in this subdivision in Weed near Mount Shasta in Siskyou County. Folding creases one split along a fold a few minor notations; very good. Development at Lake Shastina began in 1968 and focused on enticing well-heeled city dwellers in the Bay Area and Los Angeles to purchase lots for investment second homes or retirement. Lots were initially offered at $5000 and the developer Golden West Associates offered free rountrip flights for potential buyers to see the proprety. In a 2009 interview upon his retirement the long-time general manager of the development recalled "We couldn't sub-divide fast enough to keep up with sales. In the early '70s lots were selling for $17000 to $25000. The sales people could sell $2 million a weekend in real estate." Today the community is home to about 2700 people but some of the lots shown on this ambitious sales map remain empty. unknown‎

‎Late 1950s Photo Archive Documenting the Work of the National Steel & Shipbuilding Corporation‎

‎Very good. Collection of 23 professional 8" x 10" photographs showing the ships facilities and construction processes of the National Steel & Shipbuilding Corporation NASSCO in the later 1950s and/or early 1960s. The company traces its roots to 1905 with the founding of the San Diego-based California Iron Company. During World War II they built cargo barges and industrial gas cooking ranges for the military. After the war as San Diego's maritime industry flourished NASSCO began producing small fishing vessels and in the late 1950s they were contracted to build several large cargo ships. The images in this collection date from that period and show large vessels under construction men at work some of the company's fishing vessels in the harbor and the newly completed "Lt. Col. John U.D. Page" a "beach discharge Lighter built to transfer vehicles and stores from sea going ships to the beachhead" that was completed in 1957 WorldNavalShips website. There is also an aerial view of the harbor area. Together they offer excellent documentation of the company's work during this period. NASSCO remains in business today operating as General Dynamics NASSCO. All photographs are in very good or better condition; several have a NASSCO ink stamp on the verso. . unknown‎
