‎The Arthur H. Clark Company : An Americana Century 1902-2002‎

‎Spokane Washington: The Arthur H. Clark Company 2002. Brand New in perfect condition. NO rubbing. NO fading. Bright clean square and tight. Sharp corners. NOT a library discard. NO owner's name or bookplate. NO remainder mark. Fresh and crisp -- obviously never read. 2002. First Trade Edition of the 2002 edition. Limited to 1000 clothbound copies there were also 100 in leather. Includes a 37-page illustrated history of the Arthur H. Clark Company and a full descriptive bibliography of the firm's publications 1902-2002 -- over 700 books. This edition is revised corrected and much enlarged compared to the 1993 version. It has been COMPLETELY RENUMBERED because publications produced under a contractual arrangement but not issued under the Arthur H. Clark imprint have been removed from the basic bibliography and placed in a separate section. Almost 90 items published since 1992 have been added. Errors in the 1993 edition have been corrected. Information on reprint editions has been updated and expanded. Annotations have been greatly enhanced for many items and new photographic and illustrative material has been inserted. A section on catalogues and other promotional ephemera is also now included. Appendices cover Books in Series and books mistakenly attributed to the firm often due to title-page cancels -- books bearing the AHC imprint but actually published by others. Foreword by Richard M. Weatherford. Bound in the original gilt-stamped red cloth. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. New/No jacket as issued. 8vo. 303pp. Great Packaging Fast Shipping. The Arthur H. Clark Company Hardcover‎

‎Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press 1948-1950. Two volumes. xv 1 607 and vii 1 608 pages plus portrait frontispiece and plates in each volume. Original red cloth. 24 x 16 cm. Very good plus in good only dust jackets. Bookplate on each front pastedown mild marginal foxing to plates and facing pages still a nice set. Jackets are rubbed and soiled and have several tears with repairs on the verso and a few small chips. FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION SIGNED BY THE EDITOR AUBREY LEE BROOKS on the front free endpaper of the first volume. Brooks was a political ally of Chief Justice Clark and later his biographer. Some of the correspondence in these volumes is his own. Clark once called Brooks "the foremost and most successful lawyer in North Carolina." --qtd. in the "Dictionary of North Carolina Biography." Walter McKenzie Clark 1846-1924 served as justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court from 1889 and was chief justice from 1903-1924. He was a prominent and controversial figure in the politics of his state. He promoted a variety of reforms including changes in the election laws child labor regulations increased funding for public education and women's suffrage. He attacked unjust practices by the railroad banking and tobacco industries and thus made enemies of some of the most powerful forces in the state. Clark was offered but declined the Democratic nomination for governor in 1896. In 1912 he fought for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate but lost. In addition to recounting his important legal career this work also contains correspondence detailing his youthful service as a Confederate officer. Thornton 1284. Books from Chapel Hill p. 46. ‎Boston: Privately Printed: 1900. 236 pages with Genealogical and Biographical Notes. "The inscriptions in an old graveyard are to me pathetic impressive and interesting the verses sometimes crude revealing the religious hopes and tastes of successive generations. Moreover having devoted much time during some of the best years of my life to the service of the Town of Needham I have been led to search its venerable records in order to learn something of my predecessors. The epitaphs included in the volumes and those which I contributed to the Dedham Historical Register for April 1899 were copied by me in the autumns of 1897 and 1909. ‎Clay, Rev Jehu Curtis‎

‎Annals of the Swedes on the Delaware. To which is Added The Charter of The United Swedish Churches‎

‎Philadelphia PA: J. C. Pechin 1835. Book. Good. Decorative Cloth. First Edition. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Brown polished cloth with a lovely leaf pattern gilt on burgundy leather title label on back strip. Slightly exposed at corners; both joints are split with top board still attached by a binding cord and portion of endpaper rear firmly anchored by binding cords. Slightly chipped spine extremities. Front pastedown shows original bookseller's tag of Daniels & Smith 4th & Arch Sts. Philadelphia and former owner bookplate of James N. Stone; another former owner signature perhaps Stone's appears on the front flyleaf. Howes C-469a. 180 pp. illus. w/ frontis. portrait of N. Collin D.D. drawn by Rev. H. J. Norton "on stone" by A. Newsam with tissue guard. Woodcut of Wicaco Church Gloria Dei after. p. 156 opposite title pg. of Charter not listed in Howes. Laid in is 1935 newspaper clipping reprinting the following from the 7 Jan. 1834 edition of the United States Gazette: "The Rev. Jehu Curtis Clay rector of the Swedish Churches in Philadelphia and its vicinity has prepared a small volume Annals of the Swedes on the Delaware. It is exceedingly entertaining because of the anecdotes and facts recorded. Our citizens generally are interested in the old fashioned church of Wecacoe near the Navy Yard where the Reverend author of the Annals before us officiates and most of us remember the venerable Dr. Collin his predecessor of whom a likeness ornaments the little volume." Making this a unique association copy however is a 1-pg. undated 18th-century manuscript fragment on laid paper addressed to Mrs. Maria Norderlind wife of the Rev. Eric Norderlind with an explanatary note by former owner Mr. Stone signed and dated 1890 that the fragment was found among the papers of Geo. Ord Esq. The content of the note by an undetermined author has to do with the writer's feelings that his religious faith may simply be a "monstrous hypocrisy." Clay on p. 123 notes that in the spring of 1757 the Rev. Eric Norderlind was appointed assistant minister to Mr. Parlin and following the latter's death on 22 Dec. of that year was appointed by a 2 Jan. 1758 letter to supply the church during the vacancy which extended until the spring of 1759 when the Rev. Charles Magnus Wrangel was appointed as Parlin's successor. The Charter includes Wicaco Gloria Dei Kingsessing St. James and Upper Merion Christ Church. J. C. Pechin Hardcover‎
