Very Good in original contemporary calf 16 336 14 2 pp. lacking the 2 copper plates 3 folding tables present and a bit foxed with small chips to 1st table calf rubbed at the tips 20th c. prior owner bookplate front pastedown and name in ink front end page he was also U.S.N bookseller's notations in pencil front end page light to moderate toning internally. Errata slip pasted to verso of contents leaf includes a 14 pp. appendix by Benjamin Rush originally published 1777 entitled "Directions for preserving the health of soldiers addressed to the officers of the army of the United States." A well-preserved copy. Scarce First Edition of this grade-school reader for Texas children in the early 1900s not to be confused with her self-published Texas Heroes 1924 which was adopted as a textbook for third fourth and fifth grade students in Texas. 150 pages illustrated with images of the Alamo Texas Capitol and prominent Texas heroes from colonial days to Republic of Texas and statehood eras: La Salle Stephen F. Austin David Crockett Sam Houston Albert Sidney Johnston Francis R Lubbock John H. Reagan and James Stephen Hogg. The author Katie Daffan 1874-1951 taught school and served as principal of a girls' school in Dallas. She was elected first vice president of the Texas State Teachers Association and was named to the State Text-Book Board by Governor T. M. Campbell. When she was named superintendent of the Confederate Woman's Home in Austin in 1911 she became the first woman in Texas appointed to head a state institution. She was also literary editor for the Houston Chronicle from 1921 to 1928 and feature columnist for the Ennis Daily News from 1936 to 1950. Benj. H. Sanborn & Co. Hardcover
