1934. First Edition . Soft cover. Very Good-. Green stapled wraps w/sun fading to edges spine sl. split; vg- overall. Songbook compiled as "A gift to the college from the class of 1934 with special dedication to Miss Sarah Atsatt who inspired us to sing". This copy was presented to Dr. Hartley B. Alexander who composed the lyrics for the first song featured "Onward! Alma Mater Song". 21pp. Pp. 11-14 contains one of the earliest published pieces by Vladimir Ussachevsky composer and later co-founder of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center becoming one of the major innovators of 20th-century electronic music it was he who proposed the ADSR envelope for electronic sound. Emigrating from Russia in 1930 he began studying music at Pomona College a sister school of Scripps College. In 1951 he was to create the first-ever recording of electronic music. The piece here is called 'Inspiration Russian Tune' arranged by Ussachevsky. <br/> <br/> paperback

Only edition 12mo pp. 32 4 ads; full-p. map of Lake Minnetonka 7 wood-engraved illustrations in the text 5 full-p.; 1" x 2" chip to corner of upper wrapper otherwise a near fine copy in original printed wrappers. Printed in New York by Daniel Ader 211 Center St. A wonderful little early guide to the city of what is now collectively Minneapolis touting the business climate and commercial opportunities quality of education future prospects etc. together with a historical sketch of the metropolis. The publisher William Wales was the first Quaker to settle in Minnesota and induced others of the sect to emigrate here. He was active in the Quaker community and was a bookseller and stationer in St. Anthony. Thomas Hale Williams also of Minneapolis was the founder of the Minneapolis Athenaeum in 1859 "which finally became part of the Minneapolis Public Library where he served twenty years as librarian treasurer and director without compensation. He called a meeting of librarians in Philadelphia in 1876 at which the American Library Association was formed" Upham & Dunlap Minnesota Biographies. Skillman's New-York Police Reports Illustrated with Engravings. Written in 1828-29

In original boards with what appears to be later but not recent cloth over the original cloth spine. Boards worn front board only just attached some losses to spine cloth; good. Early ownership signature Joshua Hodsdon Yarmouth on front free endpaper printed label on rear pastedown admonishing the reader to "Never wet your thumb or finger to turn over a leaf in this or any other book." Little is known about John Skillman but he evidently frequented the regular morning court hearings in Lower Manhattan for people who had been arrested the previous day for relatively minor crimes such as drunkenness lewd behavior vagrancy petty theft and prostitution. His reports on these crimes which were probably modeled on those that had recently begun appearing regularly in London newspapers take the form of brief pun-filled comic vignettes or dialogues between the accused and the magistrate. For example "James G----- was sent by his employer with 10 shillings to buy screws---bought 5 shillings worth and expended the rest of the money in his own way. Is put in poetical language under the screws" and "Mary Stevenson entertains the opinion that 'time is money;' and having no instrument or machine whereby she might keep proper 'note of time' thought proper to obtain one at all hazards. She is now in close confinement for a time." Beneath the humor however are characterizations of male and female defendants of different races classes ethnic backgrounds -- some flattering some not. Scholar Brian Baaki has argued that by placing "an overwhelming volley of black malefactors" at the beginning of the text Skillman "tries to manufacture an association between African-Americans and crime." There may be room for a more nuanced reading but without doubt the book is of interest in the broader context of the social and cultural history of early nineteenth century New York. New York: Wittemann Bros 1885. Hardcover. Very good. 3.25" x 5" oblong embossed red paper boards stamped in gilt. Accordion-folded souvenir view book with 16 photolithographed views by Louis Glaser on 20 panels including a four-panel panoramic view titled "View West from Court House" and a two panel view titled "The Bridge seen from the South." Archival tape reinforcements on the back to several folds joints between panels previous owner's name on rear pastedown else very good. Includes views of the Chamber of Commerce Courthouse Southern Hotel Exposition Building Union Depot Tower Grove Park Lafayette Park and others. According to historian Ron Tyler Louis Glaser who produced more than 100 view books used a "multi-stone lithographic process to achieve a monochromatic effect that seems to have been rare if not unknown among American lithographers. Using five or more stones they laid down a series of separate shades ranging from white to light sepia-grey to the darkest sepia-grey or black. The finished lithograph has a varnished look that creates greater illusion of depth than a simple lithograph or toned lithograph. Wittemann Bros hardcover
