‎DOUGLAS H.‎

‎A Treatise on Naval Gunnery. Published with the Approbation and Permission of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty. SPLENDID COPY IN CONTEMPORARY BINDING‎

‎8vo., Second Edition, with several tables in the text, 5 folding engraved diagrams and 4 folding tables; contemporary half calf, gilt back, marbled boards, sprinkled edges, a remarkably crisp, fresh, clean copy. With an engraved armorial bookplate. A handsome and highly desirable copy of a classic work in contemporary binding. Son of Rear-Admiral Sir Charles Douglas, Sir Howard Douglas (1776-1861) enjoyed a distinguished military career and developed a well-earned reputation for enquiry and innovation. By 1811 he had perfected and patented 'Douglas's reflecting circle'; in 1816 he published an important study of military bridges and in 1819 a treatise on Carnot's system of fortification. He then turned his attention to naval matters and produced the first edition of his famous volume on naval gunnery in 1820. It is a comprehensive study covering theoretical, practical and tactical aspects and its impact was significant. Its success, both at home and in translation, led eventually to the establsihment of 'H.M.S. Excellent' as a gunnery training school.‎

‎FEATHERBE F.C.‎

‎More Tales from Churchill's Pirates. The Royal Naval Patrol Service 1939-1945.‎

‎Roy. 8vo., First Edition, with numerous photographs in the text; original photographic wrappers, wire-stitched as issued, a near fine copy. Second volume of the author's collections of veterans' stories (the first volume was issued in 1994). The RNPS was unique and boasted its own rules and regs. Manned mainly by ex-fishermen and armed with obsolete weaponry, it suffered heavily in the first years of the war. Still a grossly under-written aspect of the RN in WWII. This second volume is for some reason far scarcer then the first.‎

‎4to., First Edition, with frontispiece, very numerous photographs in the text and large folding plan at end; original pictorial wrappers, a near fine copy. The first dedicated study of this class, the acquisition of which proved an invaluable boost to a hard-pressed Admiralty at a crucial period. Good selection of photographs of virtually every vessel balances the enormous publicity accrued elsewhere by HMS CAMPBLETOWN following the St. Nazaire raid.‎

Admiral Sir John Dalrymple Hay (1821-1912) served in no fewer than twenty-three ships of the Royal Navy, from Thalia in 1834 to Indus in 1859, during which period he visited South America, the Pacific, the Near and Middle East, India, China, North America and the West Indies among other regions. He entered parliament in Palmerston's last government and was appointed to the Board of Admiralty in 1866. Following his retirement from the navy he continued active is a wide range of official and administrative roles. Curiously, this detailed and very readable autobiography remains the only substantial account of his career. Appendices include a genealogy, transcriptions of various maritime-related bills and papers, and his famous letter promoting the necessity for corporal punishment during wartime. NMM Catalogue II/1, 652.‎

‎JELLICOE John Rushworth‎

‎Autograph Letter signed. A.L.s FROM EARL JELLICOE‎

‎4pp notelet (two pages blank), measuring 7.0 x 4.5 ins (approx. 18.0 x 11.5 cms), on blind-embossed Admiralty stationery, dated 14 January 1909, last (blank) page lightly dusty else a near fine copy. THE ENTIRE LETTER IS WRITTEN, DATED AND SIGNED IN JELLICOE'S HAND. Jellicoe writes to one 'Mr. Trill', evidently an old shipmate from HMS Ramillies. 'I was very glad to hear from you that you are well and strong. Long may you remain so. I wish we could have the Ramillies commission over again. I am very glad that your boy is coming to Portsmouth. I hope it will be managed all right. I am glad to say that Lady Jellicoe and I are both very well. I hope some day at Portsmouth we may come across you, but I am much tied to the office here. I would sooner be fitting out nets at sea'. John Rushworth Jellicoe, Admiral of the Fleet Earl Jellicoe (1859-1935) commanded the Grand Fleet at Jutland. He was appointed to HMS Ramillies, new flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet, which he commanded from 1893-7 (probably the period referred to in the letter). He later served as First Sea Lord and was raised to the peerage in 1925 as 1st Earl Jellicoe. AUTOGRAPH MATERIAL BY JELLICOE IS EXTREMELY SCARCE.‎
