This copy was formerly in the possession of G.A.J. Seymour (possibly Chief Shipwright). HMS Howe's last wartime commission took her from Scapa Flow to Auckland, including the UK naval ports, Gibraltar, Algiers, Port Said, Suez, Aden, Bombay, Trincomalee, Singapore, Colombo, Fremantle, Sydney and Auckland. Then she travelled across the Pacific to take part in air strikes against Leyte. Then back to Fremantle and on to Durban (where this publication seems to have been printed), Cape Town, Mombassa, the Seychelles and Colombo again, after which she retraced her outward route back to the UK. This record is the usual ship's mixture of chronology, geography, anecdote, private reminiscence, humour, cartoons and Crossing the Line. There is much coverage of her gunnery for which she was renowned throughout the Pacific Fleet. AN IMPORTANT AND VALUABLE ADDITION TO THE OPERATIONAL RECORD OF THE KGV BATTLESHIPS IN WWII. RARE. Admiralty Coastal Salvage Vessels. Design and Service 1943 - 1993.

In 1942 the Admiralty needed salvage vessels to cope with the increasing number of incoming merchant ships bombed or torpedoed. Rescue tugs were built or requisitioned to tow ships damaged at sea, but there was a need to keep the home ports and their approaches clear of wrecks. The response was this class of nine coastal salvage vessels which became the core of the Admiralty Salvage Service during clearance operations in NW Europe following the Normandy landings. The class carried out very valuable work in opening up the French, Belgian and Dutch ports enabling supplies and food to be brought to local populations. After the war several of the class were available for charter by civilian salvage firms and one, Risdon Beazley, became the most successful British salvage company of its day. The remaining vessels stayed in Admiralty service, conducting operations such as the raising of the Dover blockships and other wartime obstructions, as well as helping the salvage effort after Suez. Four of the class were converted to diesel in the 1960’s and became known as the ‘Kin class’, a familiar sight to many around the naval ports of the UK.

Jack Eric Morpurgo (1918-2000), professor, historian, man of letters and eminent Old Blue, was educated at Christ's Hospital School and the University of North Brunswick, Canada. After service with the Royal Artillery in WWII he worked as an editor at Penguin Books and was several times nominated by Allen Lane as his successor, but the appointment fell foul of the volatile relationship shared by the two men (Morpurgo wrote Lane's biography in 1970). After Penguin he joined the National Book League (now Book Trust) where he rose to Director-General. He was subsequently appointed Professor of American Literature at the University of Leeds and was awarded several visiting professorships at universities throughout the world. He is the stepfather of the writer Michael Morpurgo. Scarce.

Much of the text appeared first as an extended series of papers in 'The Mariner's Mirror' from 1929 until the author's death in 1948.

Remarkably well-preserved wartime propaganda title (from a favoured Nazi printing house) printed in black-letter Gothic type. There are some very useful photographs among the more standard shots; although most of the captions are understandably generic the majority are instantly identifiable. The unusually striking dustwrapper illustrations by the author depicts a (probably imaginary) view of either 'Scharnhorst' or 'Gneisenau' accompanied by a 'Hipper'-class heavy cruiser and escorted by a Type-34 destroyer. The camouflage and fittings suggest the Norwegian campaign of 1940 but we have been unable to confirm that the two capital vessels served together in those waters.. Scarce, especially in this condition

Published three months after the first edition. THIS COPY WAS PRESENTED BY DONALD RUSSELL OF THE LYGON ARMS AT BROADWAY, WORCESTERSHIRE, TO E B DAVIES, FIRST LIEUTENANT OF HMS BROADWAY - A DOUBLE 'BROADWAY' CONNECTION. It carries Davies's signature and Russell's inscribed business card on front paste-down. The Town-class destroyer HMS Broadway became famous as one of three escorts (the others being HMS Aubretia and HMS Bulldog) which captured U-110 intact in May 1941. The U-boat's capture led to the first seizure of a working Enigma machine and many vital cipher documents. The capture, subsequently code-named Operation PRIMROSE, was one of the greatest secrets of the Battle of Atlantic and was not revealed until ULTRA began to be declassified in the 1970s. Donald Russell was the owner-manager of the prestigious The Lygon Arms. The hotel was purchased, restored and made famous by his father, but during WWII Donald Russell turned it into a haven for servicemen on leave. It was doubtless while Davies was staying there that Russell caught sight of the 'Broadway' connection that resulted in the presentation. It is a remarkable added coincidence that HMS Broadway and HMS Newmarket should be sister ships. 'Destroyer from America' is a vividly-written and personal account of the war service of Town-class destroyer HMS Newmarket (here thinly disguised as 'HMS Porchester'). The simple device nevertheless allows the author to describe the war in the Atlantic with much less than the usual censorship. In addition to his work as a book illustrator, the artist John Worsley is best remembered as the creator of 'Albert RN', the dummy prisoner so lifelike that it enabled a series of successful escapes from the famous naval prison camp Marlag Milag Nord. The story is told in Lewis Gilbert's well-known feature film 'Albert RN' (1953) starring Jack Warner and Anthony Steel. Law 0231 (recording the first edition).

It seems unlikely, however, that any further volumes were published and that this volume therefore stands alone; CERTAINLY IT CONSTITUTES THE FINEST PUBLISHED COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS OF ITS TYPE. Constructor Lieutenant-Commander Shizuo Fukui (1913-1993), Imperial Japanese Navy, was one of the world's foremost experts on ship design and naval construction. He was the author of some fourteen books and numerous magazine articles, which form collectively the definitive photographic record of the IJN. His wartime appointments ranged from the HQ of the Combined Fleet to the Navy Technical Institute; he ended his service career as Chief Officer and Director of Naval Construction at one of the major naval shipyards. After the war he devoted himself to historical research and made a lifelong contribution to the preservation of the records of ships of the Imperial Navy. His private library eventually contained over 20,000 photos, most of them unique, of which the great majority remains unpublished. Anthony Pavia was the owner of an archive of related photographs which it is believed found a home in the UK after Pavia's death. The author was head of the US task force that captured U-505 off the coast of Africa, the only U-boat to be boarded and captured at sea. Vividly written biography of one of the hardest worked RN cruisers of WWII. Covers her service and crippling in Norway (where the author served aboard her) followed by the Mediterranean where she won many battle honours (notably with Force K). Her nickname stems from a fifteen-day period in Malta during which she survived 2,000 sorties by Axis bombers which dropped 3,000 tons of bombs and 14 torpedoes. Certainly one of the scarcest of all individual ship accounts of the RN in WWII. The Chivers re-issue of 1986 is also remarkably hard to find. Enser, p.61; Law, 1020.

Good selection of photographs of virtually every vessel balances the enormous publicity accrued elsewhere by HMS Campbeltown following the St. Nazaire raid. Scarce.

Undeniably useful and certainly handy, it would benefit from more and better pictures (particularly of the lesser-known individuals). A similar treatment of British admirals is a greater need.
