HANWAY Jonas 1712 1786
A journal of eight days journey from Portsmouth to Kingston upon Thames; through Southampton Wiltshire &c. with miscellaneous thoughts Moral and Religious; In A Series Of Sixty-Four Letters: Addressed to two Ladies of the Partie. To which is added An Essay On Tea Considered as pernicious to Health obstructing Industry and impoverishing the Nation: With an Account of its Growth and great Consumption in these Kingdoms. With Several Political Reflections; And Thoughts ON Public Love. In Twenty-Five Letters to the same Ladies. By a gentleman of the partie
London: Printed by H. Woodfall 1756. First Edition. Quarter-bound Leather. Very Good . First Edition. 4to; 6 201 5 203-361 1pp with an engraved frontispiece and an engraved plate opposite the divisional title to the Essay on Tea both by Thomas Major after Samuel Wale. Modern quarter-calf over plain paper-covered boards the flat spine in six compartments between decorative gilt bands with a red morocco gilt lettering piece to the second compartment; all edges stained red end papers renewed. Title page and preliminaries lightly foxed but the contents otherwise clean and bright the binding tight and firm. A splendid wide-margined copy offered at an attractive price. ESTC Citation No. T127188. Gibson's Library p. 144. Hanway was both a widely traveled merchant with connections to the Russia Company and a philanthropist whose causes included foundlings prostitutes and the climbing apprentices of chimney sweeps. His mother's death in 1755 prompted him to return to Portsmouth where she was buried the brief trip that served as inspiration for this his second book to which he appended An Essay on Tea. In the book's main part Hanway describes many of the places he visited including Salisbury with its great cathedral and Stonehenge with digressions on tombstones sacred music and oratorios divine poetry temperance lap-dogs false grief the ruling passion of women and much else. His Essay on Tea indicts the beverage for causing everything from insomnia weak nerves and scurvy to bad teeth and proposes 'Herbs of our own growth in lieu of tea.' Both works but especially the latter led to a literary skirmish with Oliver Goldsmith Samuel Johnson and other ardent tea-drinkers. Regarding A journal of eight days journey from Portsmouth to Kingston upon Thames Johnson claimed that Hanway had 'acquired some reputation by traveling abroad but lost it all by traveling at home'. And though Hanway was largely right about the adulterated beverage that passed for tea in the mid-eighteenth century Johnson lambasted Hanway's views in both the Literary Magazine and the Idler where Hanway appears as Dick Wormwood a man whose sole delight is to find everything wrong.
Harriman Expedition: Curtis Edward S.; Louis Agassiz Fuertes; et al: C. Hart Merriam editor
SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION. HARRIMAN ALASKA SERIES.HARRIMAN ALASKA EXPEDITION WITH THE COOPERATION OF WASHINGTON ACADEMY OF SCIENCES
New York & Washington: Doubleday Page & Co. and the Smithsonian Institution 1914. Thirteen volumes. Half titles all but the first two volumes with two titles per volume one title in each of these volumes printed in red and black. 452 plates including one tinted lithograph two lithographs printed in two colors fifty-five chromolithographs and ten chromolithographic maps five folding. Quarto. Original green cloth blocked in gilt and blind t.e.g. Some volumes with Smithsonian spine labels over the Doubleday imprint several chipping or almost entirely perished. Ex-library with some bookplates removed bookplates and ink stamps throughout. Overall good plus. A very rare complete set of the Harriman Alaska Expedition publications. These volumes record the findings of perhaps the largest private expedition to Alaska ever undertaken that backed by Edward Harriman in 1899 in cooperation with the Washington Academy of Sciences. The party which included three artists two photographers and twenty-five distinguished scientists and naturalists e.g. ornithologist and author Daniel G. Elliot proto-conservationist John Muir William H. Brewer of Yale George Bird Grinnell Prof. William Ritter of the University of California etc. sailed from Seattle on May 30 1899 aboard the chartered steamship Geo. W. Elder. They sailed along the Northwest Coast through the Bering Sea with stops at various islands visited Eskimo settlements on the Asiatic and American coasts and went through the Bering Strait to Siberia before heading home travelling nine thousand miles in all. The first two volumes constitute the entire narrative section and are fully illustrated with significant contributions from Louis Agassiz Fuertes 1874-1927 fourteen beautiful chromolithographs of birds and the expedition's official photographer Edward Sheriff Curtis 1868-1952 forty-five evocative landscape and ethnographic photogravures as well as other images after artists R. Swain Gifford Fred S. Dellenbaugh Frederick A. Walpole and Charles R. Knight and photogravures from photographs by various other expedition members but primarily C. Hart Merriam. The remaining volumes ten in total as volumes VI and VII were never published and volume XIV was published in two volumes include all the scientific articles and monographs to result from the expedition. It is very rare to find a complete run of these and they were published over a twelve-year period. Following Harriman's death in 1910 the publishing rights were transferred by his widow to the Smithsonian who issued titlepages to the first eleven volumes and went on to publish the final two volumes in 1914. The scientific results are also well- illustrated with handsome plates and maps including chromolithographs. The individual volumes are as follows: 1 John Burroughs John Muir and George Bird Grinnell: HARRIMAN ALASKA SERIES VOLUME I NARRATIVE GLACIERS NATIVES.
