African Silences
New York NY: Random House. New in New dust jacket. 1991. Unknown. Hardcover. The author explores new terrain on a continent he has written about powerfully in two previous books. UNDER THE MOUNTAIN WALL. A Chronicle of Two Seasons in the Stone Age.
New York: Viking 1962. Second state book club. Black cloth endpaper maps. xvi 256 xvi-xxxii photo credits and index pp. Main body of text printed on pale green paper. Photo plates inserted. A fine copy no owner names. Black dust jacket has mild rubbing to spine folds and front flap fold 1 cm tear to front panel VG otherwise no chips flap price intact. The author's experiences in 1961 among a stone age people while with the Harvard-Peabody Expedition to New Guinea. This copy has the second grouping of plates placed between pp 160-61 instead of at the end where the author intended and in fact insisted they be in order not to interrupt his narrative. Such copies were the first bound but the publisher caught the error before publication and sold almost all of those copies off to a book club and then corrected the placement for their own trade issue. The book club cancelled the contents leaf and supplied a new one attached to the stub which locates the plates in the place that they actually appear in the book making a 2nd state of the first printing the first published trade edition is actually the 2nd printing. Copies with the plates in the wrong place and with the contents leaf integral and incorrectly locating the plates are of the first state - quite rare as very few got out. At the bottom of the new contents leaf are the words "Book Club Edition" an unusual place for such a designation and the only place on the book or jacket that phrase appears. The jacket is not a book club jacket but the regular trade jacket. Obviously the edition size of this book club issue is not the large number of the typical book club edition. First printing. Hardcover. Viking

Ancient Mariner The Amazing Adventures of Samuel Hearne the Sailor Who Walked to the Arctic Ocean
Toronto: Harpercollins Publishers Ltd. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2003. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. 0002000989 . DJ and boards show very light shelf wear. ; A bright solid book dustjacket in Mylar unclipped.; B&W Illustrations; 9.0 X 6.3 X 1.3 inches; 334 pages; "Samuel Hearne is grudgingly recognized as the eighteenth-century British adventurer who during a remarkable three-year odyssey became the first European to reach the Arctic coast of North America. In Ancient Mariner McGoogan demonstrates that Hearne was far more complex accomplished and influential than the history books suggest. Beginning with Hearnes entry into the Royal Navy at twelve years of age McGoogan paints an authentic portrait of eighteenth-century British life both on and off the wooden sailing ships. After serving as a midshipman during the tumultuous Seven Years War Hearne moved to London and in 1766 just twenty-one joined the Hudsons Bay Company. Based at the companys northernmost fort an ambitious Hearne embarked on an overland quest for rich veins of copper supposedly located far to the northward where the sun dont setand also to discover the Northwest Passage. In his posthumously published journal Hearne described the three-year odysseya harrowing journey marked by hardship hunger and disappointment and mitigated only by his friendship with the legendary Dene leader Matonabbee. Hearne trekked more than 3500 miles. His epic adventure culminated in the infamous and still-controversial massacre at Bloody Fallsan event that as McGoogan shows changed him forever. Drawing on naval history fur-trade history and literary history McGoogan portrays Hearne as a skilled navigator a pioneering anthropologist a ground-breaking naturalist and a gifted natural artist. He fell in love with a native woman and never fully recovered after she died tragically." . Harpercollins Publishers Ltd. hardcover

McIntyre Kenneth Gordon
THE SECRET DISCOVERY OF AUSTRALIA. Portuguese Ventures 200 Years before Captain Cook
Melb/London: Souvenir Press. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1977. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. 0285623036 . With 8 plates & 55 line drawings maps on endpapers. Signed by the author on the half title previous owners name on verso of half title and small name sticker on rear endpaper. A very good copy in very good dustjacket. Everyone knows that Captain Cook 'discovered' the great continent of Australia in 1770. It says so in the history books and his many monuments in Australia acknowledge it. True the Dutch had sighted the West Coast in 1606. But it was Cook who found the harbours of the East and made settlement possible. But K. G. Mclntyre an Australian lawyer with a lifelong interest in the history of discovery has uncovered a different story. By studying ancient maps particularly those known as the Dauphin and 'Dieppe' maps and researching the history of Portuguese navigation from the time of Henry the Navigator he shows that not only was Captain James Cook not the first European to visit Australia he was preceded by more than 200 years. For is it not reasonable that the Portuguese who discovered Timor in the mid-16th century should have found the vast continent a mere 250 miles away as well How else to explain the mysterious records of the finding of a wrecked 'Mahogany Ship' on the Southern Victorian Coast Mclntyre's story of these early voyages his detailed understanding of the development of deep-sea navigation and of the policies that drove the Maritime Powers of Spain and Portugal to compete to rule the world on either side of the Pope's meridian make his book compelling reading in itself. But The Secret Discovery of Australia is also a fascinating suspense story the tale of the author's own unravelling of a great historical mystery the unearthing of secrets that have been kept for hundreds of years. He engrosses his reader as he sets right a great injustice for the records. ; 220 x 140mm; xxi 427 pages; Signed by Author . Souvenir Press hardcover
