MAC GREGOR GREG & HALUS SIEGFRIED; SANCHEZ JOSEPH ESSAYS
In Search Of Dominguez & Escalante: Photographing The 1776 Spanish Expedition Through The Southwest
Museum of New Mexico Press Santa Fe: 2011. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. More than two hundred years later Greg Mac Gregor and Siegfried Halus have created a remarkable visual record of the expedition. Using Escalante's journal as their guide the photographers followed the expeditionary route circling through New Mexico Colorado Utah and Arizona and documenting the frontier as first witnessed by the Spanish explorers on horseback. The expedition passed what today are major national parks and landforms: Zion Canyon; Dinosaur Monument; and the Grand Canyon. The photographs show many areas virtually unchanged over centuries; other images reveal the passage of time in pictures of dammed rivers power lines and towns where once stood virgin forests. Quoting widely from Escalante's journal the authors present first hand accounts of the expedition alongside their photographic narrative. Essays by the photographers discuss their methodology and experiences as modern day explorers retracing the steps of the friars. In his historical essay Joseph P. Sanchez writes about the lasting legacy of the Spanish expedition. Museum of New Mexico Press, Santa Fe: 2011 hardcover

MACGILLIVRAY, W.
The Life, Travels and Researches of Baron Humboldt; with a Narrative of Humboldt's most Recent Researches including his Celebrated Journey to the Ural Mountains, and the Caspian Sea, etc.
12mo [18 x 12 cm]; 418 pages, engraved plates including frontis and views which are new to this edition, where the illustrations list reflects the earlier edition. original blind-stamped blue cloth, gilt spine title lettering and vignette, lightly rubbed, small erasure on endpaper, clean with the original tissue guards for the plates, very good copy. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. "Scientist, explorer and diplomat, Humboldt was the last truly Universal Man. He left his name on the maps of five continents, over a thousand places in the world are named after him and even a crater on the moon bears his name." (Douglas Botting). Humboldt explored little known South America, climbing Chimborazo, the highest known mountain, which made him world famous. He collected a mass of data, which laid the foundation of modern physical geography and established the concept of plant geography. On his return he visited the United States where he became friend and advisor to President Jefferson. Later in his life, in his sixties, he traveled to Siberia, the Ural mountains, Caspian Sea, etc. Macgillivray's book was first published in 1832 but this edition was brought up-to-date with Humboldt's later explorations to the period of his death, and extra material added.

Madox Richard 1546 1583; edited by Elizabeth Story Donno
An Elizabethan in 1582: The Diary of Richard Madox Fellow of All Souls
xvi365 pages with frontispiece five maps one folding plates appendixes and index. Octavo 8 3/4" x 5 1/2" bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt sailing ship Victoria to front cover in original jacket. Second series volume 147. First edition.

Chronicling in the main the initial albeit abortive attempt to establish a spice trade in the Moluccas the Diary of Richard Modox Fellow of All Souls covers a single calendar year. Since five months of that year were to pass before the flotilla of four ships rounded the Lizard the Diary also records its author's winding up of his affairs at Oxford his stay in London following upon the problems and false starts incident to departure and the slow passage from Blackwall to Southampton aboard the Edward Bonaventure with the many visits to and from persons interested in the enterprise. The last seven months record the tensions and rivalries that developed in the command the long sojourn at Sierra Leon and an account of the subsequent passage to Sao Vincent Brazil where they were to encounter three Spanish ships and in the words of Madox's fellow chaplain have "one verye hott breakfaste fyghting." As a circumstantial document the Diary provides diverse information ranging from details of the Oxford and London scenes and the organizational aspects of the trading venture to the customs of the natives of Sierra Leon including the earliest record of an African Language together with drawings of the flora and fauna. As a personal document it includes mordant comments on many individuals particularly those participants in the venture who wish to turn to piracy. From mid-September on when Richard Madox became personal non grata to his "captaine-General" they are concealed by cipher and pseudonyms but they are made intelligible through the clues he supplies - marginalia cross-referencing and an index to incriminating passages. Inhibited from keeping the official record of the voyage as members of the Privy Council had appointed him to do Madox seems to have used this portion of his Diary as a substitute for it. Appendices include both his official record though it is extant only up until 21 July and the complementary diary of his fellow chaplain John Walker. Taken in conjunction with materials already printed these several texts complete the documenting of the first attempt on the part of the English to establish a spice trade an attempt that antedated the chartering of the East Indian Company by nearly twenty years.

Condition:

Jacket spine ends rubbed and lightly chipped some rubbing to extremities else a very good copy in like jacket. Maguire Rochfort ? 1867
The Journal of Rochfort Maguire 1852-1854: Two years at Point Barrow Alaska aboard HMS Plover in search for Sir John Franklin
2 volumes: xiv318 pages with frontispiece 4 maps and illustrations;vi319-584 pages with foldout map illustrations appendices bibliography and index. Octavo 8 3/4" x 5 3/4" issued in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial representation of the ship Victoria embossed in gilt on front cover with cover edges blind ruled in original jackets. Edited by John Bockstoce. Works issued by the Hakluyt Society second series volume 169 and 170. First edition.

In 1845 Sir John Franklin's expedition left England search for a northwest passage and vanished into the Arctic forever. three years later HMS Plover's was the first departure in twenty one expeditions searching for Franklin. Although most of the analyses of the Franklin search have focused on the large expeditions in the eastern Arctic the smaller western expeditions also produced significant geographical and ethnographic information. The Plover's voyage of 1848 to 1854 was the first constant presence of Europeans in the western Arctic and Rochfort Maguire's journal is the earliest account of a sustained foreign association with the Eskimos of northern Alaska. Maguire's journal is far more than an important historical document; it is a fascinating account of Europeans and Eskimos learning to cope with one another. Maguire's narrative is introduced by a detailed discussion of the history strategy and logistics of the Franklin Search in the western Arctic.

Condition:

A fine copy in like jacket. Numero LXXV. Nouvelles Extraordinaires de Divers Endroits du Vendredi 18 September 1789 . Extrait d'une lettre de Madrid du 1 Septembre .
Leiden: Etienne Luzac 1789. Small 4to. 8 1/2 x 6 1/4. Woodcut arms of the Netherlands at the head of the first sheet. 4pp. With a 4pp. "Supplement aux Nouvelles Extraordinaires de Divers Endroits du Numero LXXV" inserted. Together 8pp. Unbound. Extremely rare broadsheet containing news of the Malaspina expedition: among the earliest printed records of Spain's greatest scientific voyage to the Pacific Ocean California and the Northwest Coast of America in the 18th century. The extract under the above heading continues: ". Other news in the broadsheet concerns revolutionary events in France including a lengthy speech from Necker given at the National Assembly as well as news from Russia Stockholm the Hague and elsewhere. In 1789 Malaspina and Bustamente drew up plans for this scientific circumnavigation which was to rival Captain Cook the purposes being to chart the most remote regions of America and to observe the political state of America relative to Spain. Alexander Dalrymple assisted them with scientific instruments a brilliant team of scientists was assembled and ships specially constructed. Surveys were made of the east and west coasts of South America they fixed the exact position of Cape Horn correcting Cook's reading. On receipt of orders to investigate the apocryphal Strait of Anian they sailed for Alaska and entered Yakutat Bay at the supposed latitude of the strait where the Malaspina Glacier flows into the sea and followed the coast to Prince William Sound and Nootka. Malaspina surveyed the coast south to California at Monterey Bay and crossed the Pacific in 1791. Two of his officers and Jose de Espinosa y Tello returned north in search of a North-West Passage and published the charts and account of this secondary voyage in 1802. In the Philippines New Zealand and New South Wales Malaspina continued charting before making an easterly passage around the Horn for Spain. "In spite of having commanded Spain's greatest scientific voyage of exploration to the South Seas in the eighteenth century Malaspina is virtually unknown. He had enemies in the Spanish court who suppressed his reports which were not printed until.1885. Some scholars consider the exploits of his five-year voyage as great as those of La Pérouse or of Captain Cook" Hill. Eighteenth century material concerning the voyage is of the utmost rarity.
