Horn Scientific Expedition. SPENCER Sir Walter Baldwin editor
Report on the Work of the Horn Scientific Expedition to Central Australia. Volume 1: Introduction Narrative Summary of Results Supplement to Zoological Report Map. Volume 2: Zoology. Volume 3: Geology and Botany. Volume 4: Anthropology
London: Dulau 1896. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London Dulau 1896. Quarto four volumes ii xviii 220 pages with illustrations and a map plus 11 pages of plates and a large folding map 650 615 mm; ii iv 432 pages with illustrations plus 28 pages of plates 1 folding 11 in colour and a corrigenda slip at page 1; vi 204 pages with illustrations plus 9 pages of plates 2 folding; and vi 200 pages with illustrations plus 20 pages of plates 6 folding 4 of them in colour. Original dark blue cloth lightly marked and rubbed with a few corners a little bumped; endpapers and first and last pages in each volume offset; small neat ownership signature on each front flyleaf; an excellent set throughout uncut and partially unopened. The purpose of this scientific expedition sponsored by mining magnate and philanthropist William Austin Horn and with Charles Winnecke as commander and surveyor was to examine the MacDonnell Ranges on the not unreasonable premise that 'when the rest of the Continent was submerged the elevated portions of the McDonnell sic Range existed as an island and that consequently older forms of life might be found in the more inaccessible parts'. This in fact proved not to be the case but the expedition of some fourteen weeks and 2000 camel miles undertaken between May and August 1894 was an outstanding success. 'It was not the intention . to explore a new region . But in the pursuit of natural history the expedition split into independent groups and explored undiscovered areas thus filling in more of the blank spaces in this vast region' Feeken Feeken and Spate. 'These volumes constitute one of the most substantial contributions in nineteenth-century Australian exploration but perhaps more importantly the expedition is a landmark in anthropological history because it resulted in Baldwin Spencer meeting Frank Gillen' Mulvaney.
Original cloth all edges uncut; cloth slightly rubbed bumped and flecked; small cancelled library stamp and a six-digit reference number in ink on each title page but see below; some foxing confined mainly to the endpapers and adjacent leaves; trifling chips to some uncut edges and the very occasional fingermark to the odd page; overall an excellent set throughout. The set was withdrawn from the Public Library of New South Wales; the cancelled stamps are signed by Ida Emily Leeson 1885-1964 the second Mitchell Librarian from 1932 until officially 1946. A pencilled note in each volume indicates the set entered the library on 16 March 1909. It subsequently entered the collection of Professor Andrew Arthur Abbie 1905-1976 anatomist and anthropologist whose bookplate is on each front pastedown with the date 'c.1938' written below it. Professor Abbie's annotations in pencil are to be found on nine pages of the fourth volume 'Anthropology'; the most significant of these are the 60 words written in the margins of several pages discussing diseases pages 127-129. Interesting though this provenance is let us not forget the books! HUC M. Evariste Regis Huc 1813 60.
SOUVENIRS D'UN VOYAGE DANS LA TARTARIE LE THIBET ET LA CHINE Pendant les annees 1844 1845 et 1846. Deuxime dition
Paris: Adrien le Clere 1853. Second edition. Two volumes 12mo. pp 440; iv 318. Folding map at front of volume I. Half titles present. Bound in contemporary publishers full marbled sheep spines with two red labels and gilt decoration marbled page edges marbled endpapers. Shallow chips at spine ends; some rubbing and a bit of peeling to the patterned surface; cracked joints of volume II neatly repaired; ink owner name in top margin of each title page; 8 cm closed tear to right hand side of map neatly repaired on blank side with clear archival paper tape no paper loss; bit of flaking to gilt spine ornamentation; cracked inner hinges skillfully repaired with rice paper; else a VG pair sound in the bindings; text quite clean and unworn. Huc was a French Lazarist missionary who went out to China in 1839. He stayed in Macao 18 months then made his way to Peking and eventually to He Shuy just inside the Mogolian border where he devoted himself to learning the language and customs of the Tartars. At the urging of the vicar apostolic of Mongolia he set out on an expedition to Tibet in 1844. After much suffering and crossing the punishing Ordos Desert his party reached the Tibet border in Jan. 1845 where he stayed for a few months at the famous Kunbum Lamasery where he studied Tibetan and Buddhism. The party eventually reached Lhasa 19 Jan. 1846 but Chinese authorities ordered him to Canton in Oct. 1846 where he remained for nearly 3 years before returning to Europe in shattered health in 1852. The present book was famous in its day and was translated into English by William Hazlitt in 1851. "Huc's works are written in a lucid racy picturesque style which secured for them an unusual degree of popularity. The SOUVENIRS is a narrative of a remarkable feat of travel and contains passages of so singular a character as in the absence of corroborative testimony to stir up a feeling of incredulity. That Huc was suspected unjustly was amply proved by later research. But he was by no means a practical geographer and the record of his travels loses greatly in value from the want of precise scientific data." - EB 11th edition. This second edition was re-set but with few textual changes from the 1850 first edition. . Hardcover. Adrien le Clere

Hunter Davies
In Search of Columbus
Sinclair-Stevenson UK 1991. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good Condition. This is the first UK edition. 308 pages. Boards have no wear rubbing or soiling. Dust jacket has superficial rubbing. Edges of dust jacket have moderate wear and minor chipping. Dust jacket is unclipped. Pages are lightly tanned. Edges of pages are slightly foxed. Hunter Davies sought to make sense of the miasma of contradictory statements that have been made about Columbus. He studied the Archives of the Indies in Spain and Columbus family documents in Italy. From this research he produced a biography of Columbus which appears in chapters alternating with an account of his own present-day journey in his predecessor's steps. In Haiti he tracked down the exact location at which the "Santa Maria" was shipwrecked and the first settlement established in the New World. He went to the Bahamas Jamaica the Dominican Republic Venezuela - and many other places. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Exploration; History. ISBN: 1856190676. ISBN/EAN: 9781856190671.
