Newcombe 1851-1924 physician natural historian and artifact collector was an important figure in the rush to collect Northwest Coast art and objects most of which were collected for foreign institutions although he collected for the Provincial Museum later in in his career and ulitmately his enormous personal collection was sold to the British Columbia Government and is now housed in the RBCM and the Provincial Archives. The memoir was written to vindicate the contention of Vancouver that his ships were the first to complete the navigation of the inner channels which separate Vancouver Island from the mainland. With 8 guarded maps including one fold-out and errata sheet. This is a non-circulating ex-library copy with a stamp on the title page library accession numbers on the first page of the covering letter and stamp and catalogue numbers on the last page. Von seinen fünf Expeditionen brachte Erland Nordenskiöld zahlreiche Fundstücke, wie beispielsweise Pflanzen, Gesteine oder Geschenke von Einheimischen in seine Heimat, die er als Ausstellungsstücke den Museen Stockholms überließ. Was man an Knochen und bearbeiteten Muschelschalen findet, ist ebenfalls nicht viel. Tongeiäße findet man dagegen in großer Menge, in vielen Formen und mit wechselnder Ornamentik. Ähnliche Verhältnisse wie im bolivianischen Flachlande finden wir auch an der Mündung des Amazonenstromes und im übrigen in einem sehr großen Teile von Südamerika. Es ist deshalb offenbar, daß wir unsere vergleichenden archäologischen Studien in Südamerika hauptsächlich auf die Keramik stützen müssen, denn in vielen Gegenden finden wir beinahe ausschließlich Keramik. Die von mir im bolivianischen Flachlande vorgenommenen archäologischen Arbeiten sind in den Provinzen Sara, Mojos und Guarayos ausgeführt (s. die Karte). Im folgenden werde ich zuerst über meine Beobachtungen und Funde bei diesen meinen Ausgrabungen berichten und dann einige Vergleiche ziehen. Eine bedeutende Anzahl von Gegenständen ist hier nach hauptsächlich vom Maler A. Hjelm ausgeführten Zeichnungen wiedergegeben. Die vielen Abbildungen dienen, außer als Illustration des Textes, dazu, ein so vollständiges Bild der in Mojos gefundenen Keramik zu geben, wie es angängig ist. Dies scheint mir wichtig zu sein, da dort niemals vorher archäologische Untersuchungen stattgefunden haben. BESCHREIBUNG VON GRÄBERN IN DER PROVINZ SARA. Die Provinz Sara liegt nördlich von Sa. Cruz de la Sierra am Fuße der Anden. Sie wird von mehreren Flüssen, alles Nebenflüsse des Rio Mamore, durchkreuzt. Die wichtigsten von ihnen sind der Rio Piray, Rio Yapacane mit dem Rio Palacios und Rio Ichilo. Der Rio Piray ist während der Regenzeit für kleine Flußdampfer bis Quatro Ojos schiffbar. Die Rio Yapacane, Rio Ichilo und Rio Palacios können teilweise im Kanoe oder in anderen kleineren Fahrzeugen befahren werden. Im Westen ist die Provinz kupiert, im Osten beinahe flach. Im Süden befinden sich große waldarme Gegenden, im Norden und Westen größere Wälder. Die Provinz Sara ist zum großen Teile fruchtbar und hat ein gesundes Klima. In dieser Provinz wohnen, außer Weißen, die Churäpaindianer, welche vom Rio Grande1) nach hier übergesiedelt sind, sowie wenige Chiriguano, die vor ihren eigenen Stammverwandten im Süden geflohen sind. Alle diese Indianer sind Christen und waren Missionskinder. Ehemals befand sich in San Carlos auch eine Yuracäre-Mission. Bei meinem Besuche dort fand ich einen einzigen Indianer dieses Stammes. Diese Yuracäre werden hier Mayüqui genannt. D'Orbigny nennt sie Solostos. Außer diesen Indianern finden sich in der Provinz Sara Siriono-Indianer, die von den Weißen vollständig unabhängig und ihnen feind sind. Während meines Aufenthaltes in der Provinz Sara hatte ich mein Hauptquartier in San Ignacio bei Don Casiano Gutierrez. Dieser erzählte mir, daß an verschiedenen Stellen in der Gegend große Urnen und Topfscherben gefunden worden seien. Er war mir auch dabei behilflich, die Ortsbevölkerung nach solchen Sachen zu befragen. Auf zwei der Plätze, die ich auf diese Weise erfuhr, stellte ich Ausgrabungen an. Der eine liegt nicht weit von San Ignacio am Rio Palacios und der andere an demselben Flusse nahe Santa Rosa. ? (209)‎
