Text pages very clean and unmarked no creases. Turquoise jacket with black print and illustration is clean no marks slight wear to corners and spine heel lightly chipped. The heroic story of Vitus Jonassen Bering's famous expeditions into the unknown in the first half of the 18the century. He was a Danish captain serving in the Russian Navy and was commissioned by Czar Peter the Great to explore the far reaches of the Russian Empire. His expedition took him 6000 miles overland to the Kamchatka peninsula the easternmost tip of Siberia. Then they had to build ships for the journey into uncharted seas. Bering became the first European to record sight of the west coast of America traveling eastward from the Asian Continent. Hugh entered the Edinburgh excise office as a clerk but from the first devoted his leisure to literary pursuits publishing <i>The Swiss Emigrants</i> in 1804; two philosophical treatises <i>The Morality of Fiction</i> 1805 and <i>Enquiries respecting the Character of Nations</i> 1808; and another romance <i>Corasmin or the Minister</i> in 1814. In 1816 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh to whose <i>Transactions</i> he contributed among other papers one in 1818 <i>On the Ancient Geography of Central and Eastern Asia with Illustrations derived from Recent Discoveries in the North of India</i>. In 1817 he enlarged and completed Dr. Leyden's <i>Historical Account of Discoveries and Travels in Africa</i>. Macmillan's Colonial Library # 317 & 318. This paper issue of the Colonial Library edition drops the plates and maps found in the larger Constable and Harper editions of 1897 though at least some of the more common hardcover issue came with a folding map. A classic of Arctic exploration.
