‎4to. (8), 54, (2) pp. All edges red. Modern blue boards. Only edition of this dissertation on oriental medical terminology. "The author is the theologian Michaelis [the father of Johann David Michaelis], who attempts to elucidate Hebrew terms by comparison with the Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopian languages. Choulant). - Trimmed a little closely at the lower edge with slight loss to printer's name, otherwise very well preserved. Choulant 102. Meusel IX, 137f. Fürst II, 374. ‎Arabische Grammatik, nebst einer Arabischen Chrestomathie und Abhandlung vom Arabischen Geschmack, sonderlich in der poetischen und historischen Schreibart. Zweite, umgearbeitete und vermehrte Ausgabe. Göttingen, (Johann Christian Dieterich for) Victorius Boßiegel, 1781.‎

‎8vo. (2), 8, (III)-CXII, 136 (Arabic), 256 pp. Contemporary marbled limp boards with ms. title to spine. The final edition of the venerable Arabic grammar first published by Erpenius in 1613, the work that dominated Western instruction in the Arabic language for two centuries. After re-issues (with various amendments) by Deusing (1636), Golius (1656), and Schultens (1748 and 1767), the Göttingen Biblical scholar Michaelis produced a German translation in 1771. "In the long preface [...] Erpenius's grammar is characterised as still the best one in existence for Hebrew and Arabic, and as regards any Oriental language second only to the author's father's Syriac grammar" (Smitskamp, p. 278). This second edition, published a decade later, omits the name of Erpenius: "owing to the many additions (for the greater part unneccessary according to Schnurrer) the work may now be called Michaelis' own" (Smitskamp). It was not until 1810 that Silvestre de Sacy's "Grammaire Arabe" would produce an actual advance in the field. - Binding rubbed; occasional brownstaining to interior; several old ownerships and acquisition notes to insides of covers. A good, untrimmed copy. Schnurrer p. 83f., no. 120. Smitskamp, PO 283. Fück p. 65 & cf. 119f.‎

‎Arabische Grammatik, nebst einer Arabischen Chrestomathie und Abhandlung vom Arabischen Geschmack, sonderlich in der poetischen und historischen Schreibart. Zweite, umgearbeitete und vermehrte Ausgabe. Göttingen, (Johann Christian Dieterich for) Victorius Boßiegel, 1781.‎

‎8vo. 2 parts in one volume. CXII, 256, (2), 136 (Arabic) pp. (2nd part interleaved). Contemporary papered boards with giltstamped spine label (chipped). All edges red. A Göttingen student's hand-annotated copy: the final edition of the venerable Arabic grammar first published by Erpenius in 1613, the work that dominated Western instruction in the Arabic language for two centuries. This copy was owned by the poet and pastor Hermann Bredenkamp (1760-1808), a native of Bremen, who had taken up his studies of theology and oriental languages at Göttingen in 1780. Among his teachers was not only Michaelis himself, but also the great Swedish orientalist Matthias Norberg (1747-1826), who in 1781 passed through Göttingen on his return journey from Constantinople, visiting Michaelis. Bredenkamp's annotations in the book's margins frequently refer to Norberg's personal comments on the grammatical matter and especially on the pronunciation of modern vernacular Arabic of Morocco. On the interleaves of the Arabic chrestomathy, Bredenkamp has occasionally noted vocabulary and word references, but this part does not appear to have been worked through in detail, and it is the grammar in which the most extensive annotations occur, all written in ink in Bredenkamp's meticulous and minute hand. - By the 18th century, Erpenius's grammar had seen several re-issues (with various amendments) by Deusing (1636), Golius (1656), and Schultens (1748 and 1767), before the Biblical scholar Michaelis produced a German translation in 1771. The present second edition, published a decade later, entirely omits the name of Erpenius: "owing to the many additions (for the greater part unneccessary according to Schnurrer) the work may now be called Michaelis' own" (Smitskamp, p. 278). This, of course, was the grammar of choice at the University of Göttingen under Michaelis' tutelage. It was not until 1810 that Silvestre de Sacy's "Grammaire Arabe" would produce an actual advance in the field. - Binding rubbed, extremeties severely bumped. Bredenkamp's handwritten ownership (dated 1781) to front flyleaf; title-page has early 19th century stamped ownership of G. J. Lorent. Schnurrer p. 83f., no. 120. Smitskamp, PO 283. Fück p. 65 & cf. 119f. For Norberg's stay in Göttingen cf. Chatzipanagioti-Sangmeister, p. 80.‎

‎Hebräische Grammatik nebst einem Anhange von gründlicher Erkentniß derselben. Halle, Carl Hermann Hemmerde, 1745.‎

‎8vo. (40), 312, 53, (19) pp. With one folding plate. - (Bound with) II: Tarnow, Hermann / Weidner, Johann Joachim. Grammatica Hebraeo-Biblica, comprehendens etymologiam, syntaxin, eloquentiam [...]. Rostock, Nikolaus Schwiegerau, 1722. (8), 248, (16) pp. 19th century half calf over marbled boards with giltstamped spine and spine-label. First edition of the Hebrew grammar prepared by the most celebrated orientalist of his day. The Göttingen scholar Johann David Michaelis (1717-1791) was the leading expert on Hebrew philology and Biblical exegesis. The present work advocates a new approach to emancipating Hebrew philology from the Greek and Roman tradition of linguistics, discussing verbs before nouns, as opposed to traditional Latin grammars. Fürst dates the first edition to 1744, in apparent error for 1745. - II: First edition of this grammar of biblical Hebrew by the German Lutheran theologians J. J. Weidner (1672-1732) and H. Tarnow (1674-1741). - Extremities slightly rubbed; tiny portion of upper hinge chipped away. Paper evenly browned troughout; occasional light spotting. ADB XXI, 685-690. OCLC 258323863. Cf. Fürst II, 375 (1744 ed.). Goedeke IV, 221. Not in Smitskamp. - II: Fürst III, 410. VD 18, 13308904. OCLC 248815662. Not in Smitskamp.‎

‎Colloquial Syriac as Spoken in the Assyrian Levies.‎

‎Mosul: Assyrian Press 1926. Square octavo 204 x 153 mm. Recent moderate brown cloth gilt-lettered spine. Small patch of red cloth affixed to lower board general light signs of handling the odd blot and smudge some neat contemporary annotations pest damage to top fore corner of two leaves with loss of a few letters pp. 83-6 one or two Japanese paper repairs yet this remains a very good copy. First and sole contemporary edition extremely scarce "compiled as a guide for both British and Assyrian personnel of the Iraq Levies to acquire a colloquial knowledge of the respective languages" introduction. The Iraq Levies also known as the Assyrian Levies was the first Iraqi military force formed by the British in British-controlled Iraq established initially in 1915 as a small mounted contingent of some 40 Arab horsemen raised by a Major J. I. Eadie of the Indian Army "from the tribes round Nasiriyah on the Euphrates for duty under the Intelligence Department" Browne. By 1922 the force had expanded to a little over 6 000 men drawn from many ethnic backgrounds including Marsh Arabs Kurds Assyrians Turkomans and Yezidis. The author Lieutenant Richard Hart MBE of the West Yorkshire Regiment acknowledges in his introduction the assistance of the owner of the Assyrian Press in Mosul Yosip d-Bet Qelaita "regarded as one of the best authorities of the Syriac language"; and also that of Shain Giwergis MBE 4th Battalion "formerly a schoolmaster of Baz" Hart and Giwergis both received the MBE in the 1926 Birthday Honours. Hart's book includes guides to pronunciation and vocabulary about 1 000 words for conversation common across the dialects of several Assyrian tribes which had intermingled in the refugee camps and among service personnel notes on Syriac grammar in English useful phrases "The Musketry Course" a description in both languages - soldiers were required to pass this each year "Narrative" alphabets and military terminology. The "Useful Phrases" section give insight into life in the Levies: military discipline interaction with local people and respect for their customs enlistments and discharges e.g. asking about one's tribe the orderly room disciplinary matters including being improperly dressed in the bazaar "The Country" fording rivers with loaded mules etc. health transport much on mules and their maintenance entertainment and salutations which includes the rather delightful but no doubt practical phrase "Tell the Agha that I am not allowed by the British Government to accept any presents and that I appreciate his kind offer". An online search of institutional libraries cites 8 locations only London Library St Andrews Phoenix Seminary Aiso Library Stanislaus County Library California State at Stanislaus National Library of Israel and National Dong Hwa University. ‎Life Line. Abadan Merchant Navy Magazine.‎

‎Abadan: Abadan War Charities Central Fund 1943. Square octavo 205 x 170 mm 54 pp. wire-stitched in original printed paper wrappers. With laid-in "Supplement to the Abadan Merchant Navy Magazine" 8 pp. unbound as issued. Ship motifs in bronze to panel versos line-drawings to the text. Photographic illustrations to the Supplement. Wrappers detached from text-block the staple oxidised corners bumped rear panel variably discoloured. First edition of this magazine published by employees of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company to raise money for the Merchant Navy in the midst of the Second World War. The phrasing of the "Editorial Epilogue" and the foreword of A. V. Alexander First Lord of the Admiralty suggest that this was a one-off venture to coincide with a "Merchant Navy Week" to be held in October 1943; we trace no copies of this or any further iterations in libraries or in commerce and no references in secondary literature. Abadan was the site of first APOC refinery completed in 1912 and as a key oil field and the pre-eminent Gulf entrepôt it was one of the first targets to be secured during the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran in 1941. A notice explains that "the Abadan War Charities Central Fund was inaugurated early in 1940 under the Chairmanship of His Britannic Majesty's Consul to co-ordinate and encourage voluntary efforts to raise money for war charities by the British and Indian staffs of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. Ltd. at Abadan Refinery Khorramshahr Ahwaz and Pipe Line Stations in Southern Persia and other British and Indian Communities in that area. Much generous support has also been given by the British and Allied Forces stationed in the vicinity and local Persian residents" p. 52. The fund projected to reach £50000 by the end of 1943 at the time of going to print was distributed between various causes with those in addition to Merchant Navy seamen and their dependants including "Welfare of Forces in Middle East" and "Welfare of Forces in Persia Iraq and Persian Gulf" though the largest sum £8000 was in fact earmarked for "Relief of Air Raid Distress" on the Home Front. Contributions include cartoons satirical verse a piece on "Wildfowl of the Shat-al-Arab River" "Concerning Oilwells" a brisk description of mishaps at sites including Masjid-i-Sulaiman Naft Khaneh and Haft Kel and "The Persian Gulf An Historical Sketch" which is based on the well-known book by Arnold Wilson. All pieces are signed anonymously pseudonymously or with initials with the exception of two short stories by Alec Waugh brother of Evelyn: "An Officer Learns a Lesson" and "A Happy Inspiration". An unusual and highly appealing survival. Abadan: Abadan War Charities Central Fund, unknown‎

‎Middleton, Henry / Downton, Nicholas.‎

‎Sesde reys van de Engelsche Maatschappy, na Oost-Indien [...]. Leiden, Pieter van der Aa, 1707.‎

‎8vo. (2), 217, (16) pp., final blank page. With engraved title vignette, 1 folding map of the Arabian Peninsula and 7 engraved folding plates. Later marbled boards. First edition. Scarce Dutch translation of the journals of Henry Middleton (d. 1613) and his lieutenant Nicholas Downton (1561-1615) documenting the sixth voyage undertaken by the East India Company, in 1610-12. The ships landed in Aden before continuing to Al-Mukha (Mocha) in Yemen, where Middleton's ship ran aground and had to be refloated. "After an initially friendly reception, the local ruler changed his tune and imprisoned Middleton and his crew on the pretext of their breaking an embargo against Christian shipping. After spending three weeks as prisoners at Mocha, they were taken inland to Ta'iz and then San'a, where the Pasha explained that the arrival of English ships had been resented by the local Muslim traders. Released in February 1611, Middleton and his crew returned to Mocha and sailed on 9 Aug. 1611 for Surat in India" (Howgego). The illustrations include depictions of an English ship exploding in the harbour, as well Middleton in chains in a Mocha jail. - Published as part of Van der Aa's collection "Naaukeeurige versameling der gedenkwaardigste Zee- en Land-Reysen". Somewhat browned and brownstained throughout; folding map slightly frayed; 2 tears to first plate and 2nd plate respectively; small tear to title-page repaired with old tape. Only 3 copies traceable in auction records since 1931. Howgego I, 719; cf. also p. 320. Catalogue of Printed Books in the British Museum I, 95. Tiele 5. Cat. NHSM I, 107. OCLC 14998184.‎
