Folio (202 x 330 - 214 x 325 mm). Together 39 pp. Three typescript drafts in French and English of the 1957 Petroleum Act, a pioneering document of contractual relationships in the oil industry. The personal copies of Fuad Rouhani (1907-2004), later the first Secretary General of OPEC, with his annotations. - In the years immediately following the signing of the 1954 Consortium Agreement, the historic agreement that provided Western oil companies with 50% ownership in Iranian oil production, the fledgling national Iranian oil Industry received an enormous moral boost from the exploration activities conducted around Qom. The discovery of the Alborz oilfield and the Sarajeh gas field by the Iranian Oil Company not only proved Iran's growing technical capacity but it also helped to give Iran a prestige not hitherto enjoyed by any other oil producing and exporting country. Against this background it is therefore hardly surprising that when Enrico Mattei, the Chairman of ENI (the Italian State Oil Company), decided to look for oil supplies in the Middle East by offering new contractual terms, he should turn to Iran and that the government of Iran and the NIOC should greet him with open arms. What had prompted Mattei to come forward with the participation formula was his resentment at the treatment he had received from the major oil companies by being excluded from the Consortium Agreement. Since access to crude oil resources was of utmost importance for Italy and ENI, a way had to be found for entry into the Middle East oil scene. NIOC and ENI thus pioneered a new form of contractual relationship, thereafter known as 75/25 profit sharing, breaking the hallowed fifty-fifty arrangement and heralding a new era in international oil agreements. - Traces of stapling; margins somewhat worn.

This book argues for the necessity of understanding and recognizing the Middle Eastern people in the American context, by negotiation instead of negation of hyphenated identities to prevent transferring into potential problems for the whole society, and calls for the Middle Eastern dramatists to produce works that claim a recognition of their identity in America as well as in a more global context and correct distorted images.

In addition, his travelogue discusses the Turkish tax system, the plague epidemic in Constantinople of 1721, and the Arab revolts in Jerusalem, as well as the Maltese fleet and Russian slaves in Turkey. - A tiny tear to the upper margin of the title-page. Contemporary red half sheepskin. Rare complete set with the supplement (often lacking) of a sumptuous botanical work with 552 striking lithographic plates by Aimée Henry. Among the plants and trees depicted are the date palm, the Commiphora gileadensis, and the Acacia Arabica. The work was begun by M. F. Weyhe, J. W. Wolter and P. W. Funke, and finished by the important German botanist and pharmacologist Theodor Friedrich Ludwig Nees von Esenbeck (1787-1837), best remembered for his systematic research on the medical properties of plants, which helped to establish pharmacology as a serious academic discipline. The plates appeared in instalments between 1822 and 1828, followed by several instalments of text, and finally a supplement volume in 1833. Some confusion exists as to the general title of the work, since the volumes of plates are titled "Plantae medicinales", whereas the text volume was published as "Plantae officinales". - Bookplate and library stamps in each volume. Colour frontispiece with tissue guard and associated offset tanning to the title page includes several other coloured plates and numerous other black-and-white photographs and a map. Some of the illustrations are previously appeared in a book titled "Village Life in Palestine" by the illustrator. There is a gift inscription dated December 1922 from the Werribee higher elementary School scripture examination. Slight offset tanning of front and rear end pages the sewn binding is visible between pages 16 and 17 handling marks to the spine section of the binding title and part of the illustrated front board in a mock gold colour laid over a black image. "Here in these "morning lands" the traveller who has exhausted the sites and scenes of civilised Europe will come upon a new world where all is strange and has for him the charm of perfect novelty they would actually exhibits a life 4000 years old!" -- page 12 This book was printed pre-1914 because I can find no mention of the minor conflict that occurred around then. Opening with an introduction describing the history of English game law from the time Britain was under Saxon rule, when there "was such plenty of game, that there was no occasion for restraining laws to preserve them" (p. IX), until the reissue of the 1217 "Charter of the Forest" in 1225, the treatise explains key terms of hunting law in alphabetical order, describes exemplary law cases, and discusses when, where and by whom which animals can be chased, and in what manner offenders are proceeded against. The present copy includes the 8-page appendix, giving two acts relating to doves and fish that were passed shortly after the book was printed, which is lacking in some copies of this edition. - Extremities slightly rubbed; hinges cracked. Paper evenly browned throughout. Contemporary ownership of J. An Arabic translation of Carsten Niebuhr's description of Baghdad, originally published in his "Reisebeschreibung nach Arabien und andern umliegenden Ländern" (Copenhagen, 1774-78), a remarkable travel account famed for its groundbreaking description of Yemen in the mid-18th century. - Niebuhr, by then the sole survivor of a party of five, visited Baghdad on his return journey to Europe after spending nearly a year in the Arabian Peninsula. He arrived back in Copenhagen in November 1767, where he presented his report and the workings of his departed co-travellers - a mass of writings, plans and sketches which proved to be of the most remarkable and lasting worth. - Two small stains to upper wrapper, edges a little worn, a few gatherings roughly opened, otherwise very good. A few pages unopened. Ink translator's presentation inscription to title-page. Extremely rare; not in OCLC.

Contemporary half calf over marbled boards with giltstamped spine and spine-title. All edges sprinkled red. Second edition in English of Niebuhr's excellent account of his travels in the Middle East, Egypt, Persia, India and Arabia, the first scientific expedition to this area, subsidised by the Danish king. Of the five scientists, Carsten Niebuhr (1733-1815) was the sole survivor, and his work represents an important contribution to the study of the Middle East. The maps Niebuhr drew in the course of the expedition were remarkably detailed and accurate. Indeed, his map of Yemen was the first exact map of the area ever, remaining the standard for the next 200 years. The volumes include authentic descriptions of life and customs in Yemen, Oman and elsewhere, with detailed descriptions of Mecca and Medina, Sana'a and Mocha as well as several references to coffee and coffeehouses. The first volume was adapted from Niebuhr's "Reisebeschreibung nach Arabien" (1774) and the second from his "Beschreibung von Arabien" (1772). Previously published in Edinburgh in 1792. - Corners and hinges professionally repaired. With near-contemporary manuscript presentation note to flyleaves: "presented to the Glenbervie Sunday School Library by G. M". Later pencil ownership of the Scottish dentist and naturalist E. G. H.
