SIBEL BOZDOGAN, ENGIN YENAL, SÜHA ÖZKAN.
Sedad Eldem: Architect in Turkey.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (28 x 25 cm). In English. 175, [3] p., color and b/w ills. "For over fifty years Sedad Hakki Eldem has practised, taught and researched architecture in Turkey. He is undoubtedly the country's most important architectural figure and has played a major role in shaping the visual form of contemporary Turkey - yet his work is little known in the rest of the world. This book, with its authoritative texts, is the first major publication to deal with this exceptional man's work. This monograph is introduced by Hans Hollein, the eminent Austrian architect, who has long been interested in the Turkish-German connections. Suha Ozkan sets the background context to the architect's practice. Sibel Bozdogan covers Eldem's work in several major areas, analysing his concerns over the years, and Engin Yenal rounds off the texts by tracing the more personal aspects of the architect's development. A complete chronology of works includes both biographical and bibliographical information.".

SIBTU'L-MARDINÎ [BADR AL-DÎN MUHAMMAD B. MUHAMMAD B. AHMAD AL-MARDÎNÎ], (Egyptian mathematics and astronomy scholar), (1423-1493).
[ASTRONOMY - MATHEMATICS - ARABIC MANUSCRIPT: JAYB & MUQANTARÂT; SINUS & ALMUCANTAR QUADRANT] Hadhâ risâle-i rüb'u mukantarât, Hadhâ risâle-i cenûb taraf, Hadha mukharrar latashich al-shaat fî taraf al-cayb min al-rub'u' mu'âl-ihtizâr.
Very Good Arabic Original manuscript without binding. 12mo. (16 x 11 cm). In Arabic. [40] p., drawings, and tables. Marginal texts additionally. A linear wormhole on the bottom from beginning to the end, the thread in the spine is broken hence two separate parts. Otherwise a good copy. Rare manuscript compiled from works related to astronomical instruments written by probably Sibtu'l-Mardînî, copied anonymously in the early 19th century on the paper with 'ahar' with four marginal drawings and tables. The copier of this manuscript is not described. An 'Ebced' notes on the last blank page. The manuscript starts with a calendar in the Islamic system which is prepared with red and black inks and annotated info around the table. The first part includes how to use an almucantar, directions on the sphere, location of the stars in the sky. On the last two pages, the author describes the preparation of an almucantar. The second part is titled "Hadhâ risâle-i cenûb tarafi" [i.e. Tractate on the South direction], and the third and last part titled " Hadhâ risâle-i cenûb taraf, Hadha mukharrar latashich al-shaat fî taraf al-cayb min al-rub'u' mu'âl-ihtizâr", includes some 'sinus mathematics' with two impressive tables on the opposite page. Sibt al-Maridini, the full name Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Ghazal (1423-1493), was an Egyptian-born astronomer and mathematician. His father came from Damascus. The word "Sibt al-Maridini" means "the son of Al-Mardini's daughter". His maternal grandfather, Abdullah al-Mardini, was a reputed astronomer of the eighth century AH. He was a disciple of the astronomer Ibn al-Majdi (d. 850/1506). Sibt al-Mardini taught mathematics and astronomy in the Great Mosque of al-Azhar, Cairo. He was also a timekeeper (muwaqqit) of the mosque. He wrote no fewer than fifty treatises in astronomy (sine quadrants, sundials, astronomical tables, and prayer times) and wrote at least twenty-three mathematics textbooks. Al-Sakhawy counted two hundred books that were written by Sibt al-Mardini, on Islamic law, astronomy, and mathematics. Libraries that specialize in ancient manuscripts, all over the world, have transcripts of his works. Sibt al-Mardini's declared that "the opinion of the muezzins (those who call people to prayer) is less correct than that of the legal scholars and it is the latter that should be used as the basis for the determination of prayer time". (Wikipedia). Sib? al-Maridini was a prolific author of astronomical texts, which were still being used and studied into the 19th century. Little is known with certainty about his life. It is thought that he grew up in Damascus, where his maternal grandfather, Abd Allâh ibn Khalîl ibn Yûsuf Jamâl al-Dîn al-Mâridînî (died: 1406), was the muwaqqit (timekeeper) in charge of regulating the daily rituals of the Islamic community) of the Umayyad Mosque. Later he traveled to Cairo, where tradition places him as a student of Ibn al-Majdî. Sib? al-Mâridînî wrote extensively on mathematics and mathematical astronomy. Like his grandfather, he was especially interested in astronomical instruments. The bio-bibliographical sources list some 25 treatises, many of which exist today in multiple copies. According to the historian al-Jabarti (died: 1822), Sib? al-Mâridînî's works on mîqât (ritual timekeeping) and astronomical instruments were still being studied in the curriculum of Cairo's al-Azhar, one of the preeminent educational institutions in the Islamic world, at about the beginning of the 19th century. SILAHDAR FINDIKLILI MEHMED AGA, (1658-1723).
Nusretnâme: Inceleme - metin (1106-1133 / 1695-1721). Prep. by Muzaffer Dogan. Translated by Mehmet Topal.
New Turkish Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish and facsimile in Ottoman script of original text. 1271 p. Nusretnâme: Inceleme - metin (1106-1133 / 1695-1721). Prep. by Muzaffer Dogan. Translated by Mehmet Topal. In the first section containing the years of the author's service (1106-1115 / 1695-1703), Sultan II. Mustafa's ascent to the throne, the organization of the Austrian voyages, the chronology, the names of the ranges, soldiers and ammunition rates and the activities of the fortification are described in detail. Between the years of 1704-1721, which is considered to be the second part of the Nusretname, belongs to the years when the author was far from the service of the palace. Therefore, in this chapter where the events are written in summary form, there are ambassadors' exchanges, the preparations for the expeditions, how the wars took place, the agreements made and the texts on these agreements. Finally, work has been completed with King of Sweden XII. Karl's refuge in the Ottoman Empire and with Niche (Nish - Nis) Case in 1133/1721.

SIMEON GUENTCHEFF & FRERES Bulgarian traders; HAMAMCIZADE NURI Ottoman / Turkish traders.
Autograph letter signed 'Nicolas Guentcheff' sent to Hamamcizade Nuri Ali.
Varna: Simeon Guentcheff & Freres Simeon' Genchev & Bratiia. 1927. Soft cover. Very Good. 4to - over 9 - 12" tall. Original handwritten ALS. Sent to Hamamdjizades Hamamdji Zade Nouri Aly. Letterhead 'Simeon Guentcheff & Freres' as bilingual in Bulgarian and French. Dated 2.XI.1927. "Accusons rception de votre honoree du 25 m.p. sont le contenu nous tromous conforme aux commandes faites par votre M.eur Nicolas Guentcheff.". After that introduction there's a short list: Poissons: Scoumuri Palamond Toric. 'Tarama' 'Marmeredjik' and Charan Ak-cheir and Bandirma caviars. Haci Tahir Bey who came from Bahesaray Bakhchysarai in the Crimea with his entire family was one of many refugees. And he faced all the difficulties both of exile and of resettlement. As soon as he arrived Tahir Bey found himself in the heart of Istanbul's commercial life; however carving himself a niche was easier said than done. At first he dealt in provisions; in 1859 he became a tobacco trader in the neighborhood of Langa Kapisi also known as Yeni Kapi in Istanbul. Soon unfortunately he found that established local merchants were unhappy with the competition and complained to the Municipality. In turn the Municipality ruled that provided they did not engage in illegal activities Tahir Bey and the rest of the refugees should be allowed to conduct their business unmolested. Just as he found no peace in his business dealings Tahir Bey was not left alone in Zekeriyaky where he and his family had settled. According to members of the present generation of his family his home was attacked by some local gangs so that they were forced to move to neighboring Sariyer. Around the same time he moved his place of business to Unkapani and his son Ali Nuri married the daughter of the owner of the historical Public Bath hamam of Sariyer. The profession of Ali Nuri Bey's father-in-law gave the family its surname as well as a brand name that would command respect for more than a century. Ali Nuri Bey continued in his father's footsteps gradually becoming the kind of entrepreneur that the Ottoman Empire sorely needed. The 1880s witnessed his earliest ventures as he began to deal in provisions near Unkapani and established the first incarnation of what would later become Hamamcioglu Messeseleri Ticaret Trk A.S. in the form of a sole proprietorship located in the commercial building Limon Han in the Ttngmrk neighborhood of the district of Eminn. In 1885 his son Nuri Ali joined the firm. At this date a commercial yearbook makes mention of "Ali H." a dealer in oil and rice at No. 36 Cambazhane Avenue. While we are unable to determine for certain whether or not this listing refers to a member of the Hamamcioglu family the same commercial directory for the year 1896-1897 does refer to "Hamamcioglu Ali" as a merchant based at No. 85 Osman Efendi Han. Over the next few years the firm moved a number of times within the same building: thus it was listed at No. 75 in 18985 No. 3 in 19016 and No. 9 in 1909. Starting in the 1910s the firm Hamamcizadeler or as it is now known Hamamcioglu ventured into different business areas at different locations with a speed that makes it difficult to follow its precise trajectory. For example a receipt from the wholesale fish market dated 1911 points to the family's interest in seafood. On the other hand a document dated August 1914 now preserved in the Ottoman Archives orders that the olives in the warehouses belonging to Hamamcizade Ali Bey in the towns of Gemlik and Kursunlu should be guarded indicating that the firm had a rather broad range of interests within the food sector.8 A listing of businesses registered at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1923 describes "Hamamci Zade Nuri Ali" still located in the commercial building Osman Efendi as dealing in "fish etc." 9 It is safe to assume that this qualification refers to all kinds of seafood -including salted fish dried fish caviar. SIPAHI ÇATALTEPE.
19. yüzyil baslarinda Avrupa dengesi ve Nizam-i Cedid ordusu.
Fine Turkish Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 296 p. 19. yüzyil baslarinda Avrupa dengesi ve Nizam-i Cedid ordusu. European diplomacy in the early 19th century and Turkish Nizam-i Cedid army. The Nizam-i Cedid Army refers to the new military establishment of the Nizam-i Cedid reform program. The Nizam-i Cedid army was largely a failure in its own time, but proved to be a much more effective infantry force than the Janissaries. After losing the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-92 in 1792 to Austria and Russia, Selim III concluded that Ottoman military was in serious need of reform if the empire was to survive. As a result, he began implementing a series of reforms aimed at reorganizing the military after the fashion of European militaries. This included the usage of European training tactics, weapons, and even officers. These reforms troubled the Janissaries, who were suspicious and unreceptive towards the reforms. To this end, Selim III created the Nizam-i Djedid in 1797 in order to develop a replacement for the Janissaries. By 1806 this new army stood 26,000 men strong, equipped with a French-style uniforms, European weapons, and a modern artillery corps. Due to their distinctly modern nature, the army was named Nizam-i-Cedid, which has the meaning, in Turkish, of 'New Order.'

SIR WALTER SCOTT, (1771-1832).
[FIRST "WALTER SCOTT" IN THE OTTOMAN LITERATURE] Mis Lusi yahud Lammermoor nisanlisi. Translated by Hamid. [= The bride of Lammermoor].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Contemporary cloth bdg. Foolscap 8vo. (19 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script. 152 p. The Bride of Lammermoor is a historical novel by Sir Walter Scott, published in 1819, one of the Waverley novels. The novel is set in the Lammermuir Hills of south-east Scotland, shortly before the Act of Union of 1707 (in the first edition), or shortly after the Act (in the 'Magnum' edition of 1830). It tells of a tragic love affair between young Lucy Ashton and her family's enemy Edgar Ravenswood. Scott indicated the plot was based on an actual incident. The Bride of Lammermoor and A Legend of Montrose were published together anonymously as the third of Scott's Tales of My Landlord series. The story is the basis for Donizetti's 1835 opera Lucia di Lammermoor. Salvadore Cammarano wrote the Italian-language libretto loosely based upon Sir Walter Scott's 1819 historical novel The Bride of Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti, (1797-1848). 54 years after the first edition in 1819 was published, and 38 years after the composition of Donizetti's opera, the Ottoman Turkish edition was published firstly in 1873, translated by Hamid. Zartanyan Publishing House was founded in the late 19th century in the Ottoman Istanbul, in Beyoglu district, around Suultanhamami by Zartan Efendi. Kevork Zartanian, (?-1888), was an Armenian publisher who founded his publishing house named Zartanian Publishing House in 1870. In the 18 years that passed from the publication of this book to his death, he has published books in many fields. Since he was also a music publisher (most likely), he published Sir Walter Scott's "The Bride of Lammermoor" because it was transferred to an opera by Donizetti Pasha in the early 19th century. According to Özege, Scott's translations into the Turkish language were only three. Other titles are 'Miyarü'l-makal' (1873) and 'Salahaddin-i Eyyubî ve Arslan Yürekli Risar' (1912). The last one was published in Mihran Publishing House was one of the early publishing houses in the Ottoman Empire which was one of the Armenian publishing houses. Özege 13789.; TBTK 8991. First Edition.
