UMUR-I NAFIA VEKÂLETI.
[FIRST COMPLETE ROAD MAP OF TURKISH REPUBLIC] Türkiye Devleti Nafia Vekâleti Umur-i Nafia haritasidir. [i.e. The map by Ministry of Public Works of the Turkish State].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original chromo-lithograph map. Oblong: 63x95 cm. In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). Folded. Chipped on extremities and slightly foxing. Otherwise a good map. Scale: 1:2.000.000. Detailed legends panel. This extremely rare huge map includes all railways, highways and other roads; Turkish borders with Iran, Russia, Greece, cities and their borders, printed shortly after the declaration of the republic in 1923. This is the first complete road map of the Republican period. The Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning is a government ministry office of the Republic of Turkey, responsible for the environment, public works, and urban planning in Turkey. The Ministry was formed in 1983 through the merger of the Ministry of Public Works (Turkish: Bayindirlik Bakanligi, formed 3 May 1920) and the Ministry of Development and Housing (Turkish: Imar ve Iskan Bakanligi, formed 1958). Antonio Zelic (Zellich) of Brela was one of many Dalmatians who left his homeland in pursuit of a better life during the 19th century. However, instead of going west, he set out toward the East, to the Ottoman imperial capital - Istanbul. Upon arrival in the city on the Bosphorus, Zelic found employment at the lithographic print house of Henri Cayol, the first of its kind in the Ottoman Empire. In 1869, Zelic opened his own lithographic print house called "Zellich and Sons" (A. Zellich et fils). His descendants continued his work with great success, and the Zellich Print House, now known as "Zellich Brothers" (Zellich frères), became one of the most renowned in the Empire. Zellich Brothers won recognition due to the high quality of their products, and, above all, the amazing beauty of their postcards and posters. Their crowning achievement was an order for the printing of the Ottoman Turkish Lira banknotes in 1914. Zellichs received many Ottoman and international awards, including medals conferred by the Pope, the Persian shah, and the Serbian king.". (Source: Documentary film "Zelic- Printers to the Empire", Levantineheritage). Extremely rare. Not in TBMM Library.; Not in OCLC.; Not in Turkish National Library.

URI M. KUPFERSCHMIDT.
European department stores and Middle Eastern consumers: The Orosdi-Back Saga.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 92 p., color ills. European department stores and Middle Eastern consumers: The Orosdi-Back Saga. Winner of the 2004-2005 Best Scientific Paper Prize in the Ottoman Bank Archives and Research Centre's biannual competition, Unveiling the History of Turkish Banking and Finance, organized with the collaboration of the European Banking History Association and the History Foundation of Turkey. In ¿another age of globalization, the Ets.Orosdi-Back were a trading company which stepped into the new business opportunities of the Middle East from the mid-19th century on. The Ets.Orosdi-Back became best known for their department stores in Istanbul, Cairo, Beirut, Tunis and Baghdad. Adolf Orosdi, a Hungarian army officer, who had found refuge in the Ottoman Empire, opened a first clothing store in Galata in 1855. With the Back family, equally of Jewish Austro-Hungarian descent, Orosdi and his sons began establishing similar stores elsewhere. In 1888, when their siege social was registered in Paris, they already had outlets in Philippopoli , Bucharest, Salonica, Izmir, Cairo, Alexandria, Tanta, and Tunis, as well as purchasing missions in industrial and commercial centers in Europe. Their business gradually evolved from wholesale to retailing, in particular through grands magasins, which differed from the bazaar. This study aims to make an original contribution to the history of department stores in the Middle East. Advertising nouveautes and articles de Paris, Orosdi-Back sold fashionable clothing and bonneterie, but also travel and household goods, toys etc. For decades they also had a large share in the marketing of fezzes. The consumption of foreign commodities gradually began to trickle down to the middle classes. Most etatist regimes therefore did not liquidate this class of foreign stores but nationalized them for their own economic purposes. In Egypt, the Omar Effendi chain, which carries the name of its origin in Istanbul, was recently re-privatised and purchased by a Saudi firm.

V. J. PARRY.
Richard Knolles' history of the Turks. Edited by Salih Özbaran.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. [xvi], 152 p. "In the 1950s, SOAS Ottoman historian V.J. Parry, best known for his work on Ottoman weapons and explosives technology, embarked on a doctoral dissertation which was to be an evaluation and presentation of Richard Knolles' famous General Historie of the Turks (1603). Yet Parry's manuscript, a fundamental companion to that early text, remained undiscovered until his death. Embellished with numerous anecdotes illustrating the ruthlessness and exotic splendor of this Eastern people, Turkish critic Orhan Burian notes that Knolles' General Historie is "one of the earliest histories to be written in the English language," and has been praised as "a monument of Elizabethan prose by several discerning judges," including Samuel Johnson and Lord Byron. Byron admitted that the work "had much influence" on his future wishes to visit the Levant, and "gave perhaps the Oriental coloring" observed in his poetry According to V.J. Parry, "if we look forward from 1603, we shall encounter, on this subject, no monument of historical writing which can vie with Knolles, until we reach the famous Geschichte des Osmanischen Reiches of von Hammer, well over two hundred years more recent in date. In the narrower field of English historical literature, Knolles remains without a true rival, for his book is still, despite its limitations, the most exhaustive that we have, a vast repository of much that we prize most highly amongst the sources for the rise and full resplendence of the Ottoman might." After waiting nearly half a century until after his death, and although incomplete, Parry's Richard Knolles' History of the Turks has now been edited by historian Salih Özbaran, thus offering us Parry's insights into this unique document on Ottoman life and history.".

Valensi Lucette
