‎FILIZ ÖZDEM.‎

‎Amasya: Maid of the mountains. Photographs by Ali Konyali - Tarkan Kutlu.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (29 x 23 cm). In English. 400 p., color and b/w ills. "Amasya has traces in Dogantepe Höyük that go as far back as to the latter period of the Late Neolithic Age and, as Sevket Dönmez notes in his article, "Amasya is one of the rare Anatolian cities to have kept its name (Amasea, Amaseia, Amasseia, Amaseia Hadriane, Amaseia Severiane Antoniane, Amaseia Severeia Alexandreia) almost intact from time immemorial. Amasya is on the Yesilirmak River that in Hittite texts is named 'Kummeshmaha' and in the classical era was called 'Iris'. The Yesilirmak flows from west to east along the long narrow channel it carves in the limestone and travertine rocks. Towering immediately north of the river is Mount Harsena where the city's castle is built." It is a common belief that the love of Ferhat and Sirin found a home in Amasya. In his article Sevket Dönmez remarks that, "the Anatolian version of the epic love story of Princess Sirin and Ferhad - Sirin being the sister of Queen Mahmene Banu, Azerbaijan's ruler of the city of Erzen; Ferhad being the region's famous craftsman- is set in Amasya where it has left a mark on the town's historical topography and archaeology. The two simple graves side by side on Mount Ferhad today have been attributed to Ferhad and Sirin, illustrating how contemporary and popular the story is." Amasya, Maid of the Mountains, is about the cultural heritage of a city that has been the cradle rich in popular culture and belief systems. Sevket Dönmez looks at the city as an antique settlement and portrays Pontic Cappadocia in his article about Oluz Höyük. E. Emine Naza Dönmez emphasizes the importance of Harsena Castle and Kizlar Sarayi for the city and she also focuses on the architecture in the Turkish Period. Muzaffer Doganbas describes the woodcraft in the region, and also the belief systems and sacred buildings. I. Hakki Göztas scrutinizes the historical development of the city and its secular architecture. The photographers Ali Konyali and Tarkan Kutlu held a mirror to the city of Amasya in this monograph prepared by Filiz Özdem.‎

‎FILOZOF RIZA TEVFIK [BÖLÜKBASI], (Turkish poet, philosopher, statesman), (1869-1949).‎

‎[Autograph photo signed by Tevfik's son as 'Said Riza'].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original b/w photograph. (14 x 9 cm). Autograph signed by Tevfik's son Said Riza Bölükbasi, who was a Turkish intellectual and author. Riza Tevfik Bey was a Turkish philosopher, poet, politician of liberal signature and a community leader (for some members among the Bektashi community) of the late-19th-century and early-20th-century. A polyglot, he is most remembered in Turkey for being one of the four Ottoman signatories of the disastrous Treaty of Sèvres, for which reason he was included in 1923 among the 150 personae non gratae of Turkey, and he spent 20 years in exile until he was given amnesty by Turkey in 1943. In this photo, Riza Tevfik with his masonic sign pin. Resna photography studio was a first Muslim Turkish photograph studio founded by Bahaettin Rahmi Ediz, (1875-1951). This is a rare autograph.‎

‎FIRAT GÜLLÜ.‎

‎System crisis and theater in the Ottoman Empire: Representation of the late Ottoman system crisis in theatrical plays.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 160 p. In this work, the term "artistic truth" is a starting point for studying the past through two works of literature; two theater plays written in late nineteenth century in order to get a multifaceted picture of the time. In this analytical reading, the Habermasian perspective of "system crisis" provides a useful basis from which to give meaning to world presented in these plays. The author analyzes Semsettin Sami's Gave (1877) to put forth his political vision and advice to save the empire from a systemic crisis, and Hagop Baronian's The Honorable Beggars (1881) disclosing the playwright's view about the destructive effects of the Ottoman system crisis on the Armenian community living in Istanbul.‎

‎As New As New English Original bdg with dust wrapper. Mint. Roy. 8vo. (25 x 17 cm). 1072 p. In Turkish. =[The book of kings]. "The Shahnameh recounts the history of Iran, beginning with the creation of the world and the introduction of the arts of civilization (fire, cooking, metallurgy, law) to the Aryans (in the sense of Iranians) and ends with the Arab conquest of Persia. The work is not precisely chronological, but there is a general movement through time. Some of the characters live for hundreds of years but most have normal life spans. There are many sh¿hs who come and go, as well as heroes and villains, who also come and go. The only lasting images are that of Greater Persia itself, and a succession of sunrises and sunsets, no two ever exactly alike, yet illustrative of the passage of time. The work is divided into three successive parts: the mythical, heroic, and historical ages. Father Time, a Saturn-like image, is a reminder of the tragedy of death and loss, yet the next sunrise comes, bringing with it hope of a new day. In the first cycle of creation, evil is external (the devil). In the second cycle, we see the beginnings of family hatred, bad behavior, and evil permeating human nature. Sh¿h Fereyd¿n's two eldest sons feel greed and envy toward their innocent younger brother and, thinking their father favors him, they murder him. The murdered prince's son avenges the murder, and all are immersed in the cycle of murder and revenge, blood and more blood. In the third cycle, we encounter a series of flawed shahs. There is a Phaedra-like story of Sh¿h Kay K¿vus, his wife S¿ The mythical age: After an opening in praise of God and Wisdom, the Shahnameh gives an account of the creation of the world and of man as believed by the Sasanians. This introduction is followed by the story of the first man, Keyumars, who also became the first king after a period of mountain dwelling. His grandson Hushang, son of S¿y¿mak, accidentally discovered fire and established the Sadeh Feast in its honor. Stories of Tahmuras, Jamshid, Zahh¿k, Kawa or Kaveh, Fereyd¿n and his three sons Salm, Tur, and Iraj, and his grandson Manuchehr are related in this section. This portion of the Shahnameh is relatively short, amounting to some 2,100 verses or four percent of the entire book, and it narrates events with the simplicity, predictability, and swiftness of a historical work. The heroic age: Almost two-thirds of the Shahnameh is devoted to the age of heroes, extending from Manuchehr's reign until the conquest of Alexander the Great (Sekandar). The main feature of this period is the major role played by the Saka or Sist¿n¿ heroes who appear as the backbone of the Persian Empire. Garsh¿sp is briefly mentioned with his son Narim¿n, whose own son S¿m acted as the leading paladin of Manuchehr while reigning in Sist¿n in his own right. His successors were his son Z¿l and Zal's son Rostam, the bravest of the brave, and then Far¿marz. Among the stories described in this section are the romance of Zal and Rud¿ba, the Seven Stages (or Labors) of Rostam, Rostam & Sohr¿b, S¿y¿vash & Sud¿ba, Rostam & Akv¿n D¿v, the romance of Bi¿han & Maní¿heh, the wars with Afr¿s¿y¿b, Daqiqi's account of the story of Gosht¿sp & Arj¿sp, and Rostam & Esfandy¿r. It is noteworthy that the legend of Rostam and Sohr¿b is attested only in the Shahnameh and, as usual, begins with a lyrical and detailed prelude. Here Ferdowsi is at the zenith of his poetic power and has become a true master of storytelling. The thousand or so verses of this tragedy comprise one of the most moving tales of world literature. The historical age A brief mention of the Arsacid dynasty follows the history of Alexander and precedes that of Ardashir I, founder of the Sassanid Empire. After this, Sassanid history is related with a good deal of accuracy. The fall of the Sassanids and the Arab conquest of Persia are narrated romantically.‎

‎Orientalism in Polish art.= Polonya sanatinda Oryantalizm. [Exhibition catalogue]. 24 October 2014 - 18 January 2015, Pera Museum.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 360 p., color and b/w ills. The exhibition highlights the orientalist trend in Polish painting, as well as drawings and graphic arts. The works in the exhibition cover a wide period from the 17th to the early 19th centuries. Among others, the exhibition includes drawings by Christian Kamsetzer of his Turkish travels, as well as oriental scenes by artists like Zmurko and Brandt. The artworks exemplify topics related to the Ottoman world, and to a lesser extent, the Near East and North African regions. One section of the exhibition is dedicated to Stanislaw Chlebowski, the court artist of Sultan Abdülaziz. Works by other artists who had visited Turkey, among them Jan Matejko, Waclaw Pawliszak, Jan Ciaglinski, and Jacek Malczewski, are also included. Selected from the collections of Polish institutions ranging from the National Museums in Warsaw, Kraków, Poznan, and Wroclaw, the University Library in Warsaw, to Lazienki Palace Museum, the exhibition brings together approximately 190 works. The apogee of Orientalism, which refers to a cultural current in Europe centred on an interest in the cultures of the East manifesting itself in art, architecture, music, literature, and the theatre, arrived in the 19th century, when a distinct Orientalist current sprang forth from academic painting, inspired first and foremost by the cultures of the Islamic countries of the Middle East and North Africa, as well as of Moorish Spain. In the specific case of Poland, interest in the Orient goes back to medieval times; a natural result of her geographic location, which rendered Poland particularly susceptible to influences from the East. To a large extent, this period in Polish history was defined by successive wars with the Ottomans, and it left an indelible trace in culture. A variety of equestrian types, generic skirmishes and great historic battles were depicted many times by various skilled artists, as well as Oriental characters, landscapes, and genre scenes -first and foremost of the harem. The latter subject matter, popular among audiences, was often taken up by painters who had never been to the East themselves. Exhibition catalogue presents works by the artists among them Jan Matejko, Waclaw Pawliszak, Jan Ciaglinski, Jacek Malczewski, and especially Stanislaw Chlebowski, the court artist of Sultan Abdülaziz, are included, and also sheds light on the artistic influences of Poland's cultural interaction with the East, different from the Western Orientalist approach, through history, diplomacy, battles and travellers.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (31 x 22 cm). In Italian and English with Turkish abstracts. 2 volumes set: (911 p.), b/w and color ills. F.
