‎Bazaar painters: Ottoman figurative arts 2. Edited by Tülün Degirmenci, M. Sabri Koz.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (29 x 23 cm). Edition in English. 248 p., color ills. Bazaar painters: Ottoman figurative arts 2. Edited by Tülün Degirmenci, M. Sabri Koz. Coining the phrase 'bazaar painters' in a 1985 article, Metin And enriched our art history terminology with a new concept as well as offer a glimpse into the world of these artists: how they worked, what they drew, where their works are today and how they contribute to our study of history of art and culture. He continued to promote and popularise their work through books and articles published until 2007, at times repeating earlier content as required. Bazaar painters and their work were not initially identified as a distinctive genre; Franz Taeschner, the first researcher to publish a selection, felt no need to refer to them as anything other than 'miniatures'. Challenging this trend, Metin And set about the immensely difficult task of obtaining pictures of bazaar painting albums from four corners of the globe in order to illustrate a prolific series of essays and books. The second volume of Ottoman Figurative Arts, Bazaar Painters consists of twelve articles published between 1985 and 2007, a comprehensive introduction by Tülün Degirmenci, and a concise album. The pictures and inscriptions Metin And chased enthusiastically all his life are but the echoing footsteps of a book, one that was either never written, or somehow got lost before it could be published.‎

‎Ottoman figurative arts 1: Miniature.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (29 x 23 cm). Edition in English. 600 p., color ills. For over fifty years, Metin And championed Turkish theatre, traditional performing arts, festivities and the art of Ottoman miniature in dozens of articles and ten titles in Turkish and other languages. The list ends with "Ottoman Figurative Arts I: Miniature", which attests to And's fascination with the subject. A fundamental "art of the book" as well as a courtly art form, miniature favoured a highly realistic depiction of daily life, human beings, the urban fabric and buildings - an aspect promoted widely in And's work. Miniature's main function was illustrating manuscripts. As "Ottoman Figurative Arts I: Miniature" ably demonstrates, the target audience was either the sultan, or high-ranking statesmen. Manuscripts so illustrated were prohibitively costly works of art, safeguarded in the Treasury, and any illustrated manuscript captured in battle would have delighted the victorious commander and sultan equally. An indispensable reference book, the lavishly illustrated "Ottoman Figurative Arts I: Miniature" covers the stages in the development of the art in the Ottoman Empire, an overview of the studios, techniques and methods of this courtly art, and includes a splendid Album of portraits, lives of the sultans, the palace, festivals, literary works, religious topics, landscapes and townscapes, scientific and encyclopaedic subjects, the world of birds, animals and fantastic creatures as well as women and men.‎

‎New French Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In French. 238 p., ills.

‎Ottoman medals and orders. Documented history.= Osmanli madalyalari ve nisanlari. Belgelerle tarihi.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (27 x 20 cm). In English and Turkish. 384 p., color and b/w ills. Ottoman medals and orders. Documented history.= Osmanli madalyalari ve nisanlari. Belgelerle tarihi. Medals and orders are generally considered as significant objects of art and they are an important part of a nation's heritage throughout its history. Furthermore, they symbolize the sovereignty of that nation and honor those who earned them. Ottoman medals and orders symbolize the recent 250 year history and art of the Empire. They are objects of art, symbols of honor and numismatic materials at the same time. The Ottoman Empire ruled a large area for hundreds of years and archival records show that during this time, it issued medals and orders not only to its own people but also to foreign nationals. Since the Empire left its mark on these civilizations over the years, its medals and orders should be of great interest to the people who lived under Ottoman rule during this period. This book is the result of a careful and meticulous 15-year research on Ottoman medals and orders and it is the first detailed publication on the subject.‎

‎JANSEM.

‎Commagene: The land of gods between the Taurus and the Euphrates. An archaeological guide.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. 372 p. Color and b/w ills. "The country of ancient Commagene spreads between the Taurus Mountains and the Euphrates in South-Eastern Turkey. Located at the eastern fringe of the Mediterranean world Commagene has been a border region for many centuries. Rooted in Near Eastern traditions the country was exposed to frequently changing religious systems and political powers. Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Armenians, Seljuks, Crusaders, Mamluks, and Ottomans have left their mark on the fertile valleys and the barren hills. There are famous and much frequented places like the grave tumulus of the Hellenistic king Antiochos I on the Nemrut Dag, which is inscribed in the UNESCO world heritage list, or the roman city of Zeugma with its splendid mosaics. However, a considerably larger number of attractive monuments and sites - ranging from Hittite reliefs to impressive medieval castles - are to be explored in Commagene. This richly illustrated book provides a broad overview of the most important sites and their historical background. It aims at travellers in the region as well as readers interested in the history and archaeology of ancient Turkey.".‎
