MORGENS TROLLE LARSEN.
Kültepe tabletleri VI-A.= The Archive of the Salim-Assur Family. Vol. 1: The first two generations.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In English and Turkish. [xvi], 585 p. Kültepe tabletleri VI-A.= The Archive of the Salim-Assur Family. Vol. 1: The first two generations. The edition is only the first part out of five that deal with the family archive of Salim-Assur, and includes only 295 out of 1100 texts from the archive. Half of these texts are duplicates and envelopes, so that the actual amount of unique documents is somewhat smaller. Larsen has divided the texts into differ-ent dossiers with distinctive subjects that deal with the archives of Issu-arik and his two sons Iddin-Abum and Salim-Assur until their death. The volume ends with quarrels about the inheritance of Salim-Assur, with his son Ennum-Assur taking the initiative. We know Ennum-Assur also from out-side the Kt 94/k archive, as he is mentioned with patronymic by Buzazu son of Pusuken in a letter to Puzur-Assur son of Isar-kitti-Assur (CTMMA 1 71:5). Another interesting link with the Pusuken archive can be found in TC 3 36, where Pusuken is in the process buying the house of a son of Issu-arik. Larsen suggested that the most probable candidate for this son was Assur-bel-awatim. The family of Salim-Assur is well established, with Larsen discussing the major figures briefly and providing a family tree. The texts in the archive date from the time of Issu-arik (KEL 40/1-85) to the death of Salim-Assur (KEL 103/4) and the quarrelers following his disappearance that ended with the murder of Ennum-Assur (KEL 105/6). The texts are divided not according to the archeological number of the texts; rather all documents are sorted to subject in different dossiers. The content of these dossiers is further-more discussed in the introduction. This favorable method cannot prevent some chronological overlay between the dif-ferent dossiers, though this is solved by references in the commentary of the texts. The archive features two rather large dossiers on the death of the two brothers Iddin-abum (48 texts) and Salim-Assur (88 texts). Both dossiers were also discussed by Hertel; in his unpublished Copenhagen dissertation (2007: first dossier p. 438ff., second dossier p. 303ff.); an updated version has appeared since (Hertel & Larsen 2010). Iddin-abum had appointed his brother as successor at his deathbed. Salim-Assur seems to have chosen Ennam-Assur in his will, though in his case problems would arise, as an alternate testament seems to have existed. Testaments are relatively rare in the Old Assyrian text corpus, though they are frequently referred to in the texts. In AKT 6a they are mentioned, but not found, as they were kept in Assur. What we do have tells us more on arrangements made before the death of a trader. Though it seems to be standard for the Assyrians to have a testament composed, no heir in business was appointed in the found examples. It appears that this had something to do with the minor status of the traders who drew up the known testaments; we know from other refer-ences that a successor could be appointed. This new family leader was either a brother or son. (Source: BIBLIOTHECA ORIENTALIS LXIX N° 5-6, september-december 2012). MORIN Edgar

Morris Benny, Dror Ze'evi
The Thirty-Year Genocide: Turkey?s Destruction of Its Christian Minorities 1894-1924
8vo, 656pp. hardcover in dj. Between 1894 and 1924, three waves of violence swept across Anatolia, targeting the region?s Christian minorities, who had previously accounted for 20 percent of the population. By 1924, the Armenians, Assyrians, and Greeks had been reduced to 2 percent. Most historians have treated these waves as distinct, isolated events, and successive Turkish governments presented them as an unfortunate sequence of accidents. The Thirty-Year Genocide is the first account to show that the three were actually part of a single, continuing, and intentional effort to wipe out Anatolia?s Christian population. The years in question, the most violent in the recent history of the region, began during the reign of the Ottoman sultan Abdulhamid II, continued under the Young Turks, and ended during the first years of the Turkish Republic founded by Ataturk. Yet despite the dramatic swing from the Islamizing autocracy of the sultan to the secularizing republicanism of the post?World War I period, the nation?s annihilationist policies were remarkably constant, with continual recourse to premeditated mass killing, homicidal deportation, forced conversion, mass rape, and brutal abduction. And one thing more was a constant: the rallying cry of jihad. While not justified under the teachings of Islam, the killing of two million Christians was effected through the calculated exhortation of the Turks to create a pure Muslim nation.

MOUSTAPHA RECHID PASHA THE GREAT, (Ottoman statesman and diplomat), (1800-1858).
[FATHER OF THE OTTOMAN REFORM / TANZIMAT] Autograph letter signed 'Rechid' with his original engraved portrait.
Very Good French Original ALS / ADS signed by Koca Moustapha Rechid Pasha the Great with his an engraved portrait in the same fine frame. 1 p. on bifolium. In French. 12 lines. It's written from Paris, when he was appointed as an Ottoman ambassador to France five years later from the Ottoman Reform in 1839. Koca Mustafa Pasha was an Ottoman statesman and diplomat, known best as the chief architect behind the Ottoman government reforms known as Tanzimat. Born in Constantinople (now Istanbul) in 1800, Mustafa Resid entered public service at an early age and rose rapidly, becoming ambassador to France (1834) and to the United Kingdom (1836), minister for foreign affairs (1837), and once again ambassador to the United Kingdom (1838) and to France (1841). In the settlement of the Oriental Crisis of 1840, and during the Crimean War and the ensuing peace negotiations, he rendered important diplomatic services to the Ottoman state. He returned a third time as ambassador to France in 1843. Between 1845 and 1857, he held the office of Grand Vizier six times. One of the greatest and most versatile statesmen of his time, thoroughly acquainted with European politics and well-versed in national and international affairs, he was a convinced partisan for reform and the principal author of the legislative remodeling of the Ottoman administration known as Tanzimat. His efforts to promote reforms within the government led to the advancement of the careers of many other reformers, such as Fuad Pasha and Mehmed Emin Âli Pasha. After the conclusion of the Oriental Crisis of 1840 due to Muhammad Ali in Egypt, Muhammad Ali Pasha bribed the Ottoman Porte to remove Mustafa Rechid Pasha from his post as Foreign Minister. He returned to his post as Ambassador to Paris soon after where he mainly focused his efforts on solving the Lebanon Question, which resulted from a dispute between a Christian group called the Maronites based out of Lebanon and an extremist Shia group called the Druzes who came from Syria and Lebanon.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original wrappers. Foolscap 8vo. (17 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 152 p. Roumi: 1324 = Gregorian: 1906. Taken from a volume including multiple books. Spine is restored. A very good copy. First and only edition of this early and extensively rare book including a first-hand account of the topography and descriptions of Hejaz, Mecca, and other parts of Arabian Peninsula such as Taif and Yemen by Sadiq Sherif, who was the first person to take photographs of Mecca, Medina, and the Hajj in 1880 and 1881 as well. Sadiq Sherif was the grandson of Serif Abdulmuttalib, the Emîr of Mecca. This book written by Sherif was dedicated to 'the Progress and Union Society' [i.e. Ittihad ve Terakki Cemiyeti]. The book describes the way of administration and territorial division of Hejaz after giving some information of its geography, borders, tribes and natives, mountains, rivers, crops and products, and animals of this Ottoman 'vilâyat' [i.e. province]. Sherif gives detailed information on how and when the Ottoman Empire ruled Hejaz, the location of Mecca city, its borders, physical and social geography, crops in Mecca and around, its flora, fauna, demographic structure, 'nahiyes', Kâba's construction, and its history, sacred places around, Masjid-i Haram and other masjids, cemeteries, mountains, gifts by Ottoman caliphs to Kaba, 'Taif' area, people who were 'Emîr' of Mecca from the period of Mohammad, Wahhabism and its birth, etc. At the last, Sherif gives place to his personal letter (layihâ) including 49 articles. The letter was about the reforms that Hejaz needs and it was sent to the Ottoman 'sadâret' [i.e. prime ministry]. (Source: History of geographical literature during the Ottoman Empire, Edited by Ihsanoglu). Muhammad Sadiq Sherif Bey was the first person to take photographs of Mecca, Medina, and the Hajj in 1880 and 1881. Sadiq Bey trained as a military engineer after completing his studies in Cairo and at the École Polytechnique in Paris. It is not known when, or from whom, Sadiq Bey learned to take photographs but it was most probably through one of the resident photographers in Egypt. In 1861, prompted by the need to carry out more extensive military land surveys of the area between Wajh and Medina, Sadiq Bey made his first journey to Arabia. He took a camera along with his surveying equipment and took his very first photographs of Medina. In a series of articles published in the Egyptian Military Gazette in 1877, he refers to his early photography at Medina describing the use of a 'photographia'. Sadly, however, none of the photographs from this first journey has survived. In 1880 he was appointed as the treasurer of the Mahmal, the ornate cloth to cover the Ka'ba brought each year on a special litter to Mecca. He accompanied the Mahmal to Medina and Mecca from September 1880 until January 1881. Again equipped with his camera, he succeeded in producing the series of photographs that are now considered some of the earliest known photographs of the region, those of the Ka'ba, taken under great secrecy. Sadiq Bey published various accounts of his travels in Arabia in military journals, through the Emiry Grand Press in Cairo, but the 1880/81 series of photographs appear to have been issued separately for wider distribution through the Société Khédiviale de Géographie. The society's secretary, Dr. Frederic Bonola, advertised sets of photographs for sale. In January and April 1880 Sadiq Bey gave a talk and report to the society on his earlier 1861 expedition, and on 20 May 1881 he presented a report on his recent journey to Mecca; detailed accounts were published in the society's bulletins, numbers 9/10 and 12. MUHAMMED BIN ISA ET-TIRMIZÎ, (824-892).
Muhtasar semâil-i serif tercümesi. Narrated by Mehmed Raif El-Hac.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original aesthetic leather bdg. with traditional Ottoman style. Large roy. 8vo. (25 x 17 cm). In Ottoman script. [4], 365, [1] p. Muhtasar semâil-i serif tercümesi. Prep. by Mehmed raif El-Hac. Tirmizî, often referred to as Imam at-Termezi/Tirmidhi, was a Persian Islamic scholar and collector of hadith who wrote al-Jami` as-Sahih (known as Jami` at-Tirmidhi), one of the six canonical hadith compilations in Sunni Islam. He also wrote Shama'il Muhammadiyah (popularly known as Shama'il at-Tirmidhi), a compilation of hadiths concerning the person and character of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad. At-Tirmidhi was also well versed in Arabic grammar, favoring the school of Kufa over Basra due to the former's preservation of Arabic poetry as a primary source. Muhammad ibn `Isa at-Tirmidhi was born during the reign of the Abbasid caliph al-Ma'mun. He began the study of hadith at the age of 20. From the year 235 AH (849/850) he traveled widely in Khurasan, Iraq, and the Hijaz in order to collect hadit. At-Tirmidhi was a pupil of al-Bukhari, who was based in Khurasan. Adh-Dhahabi wrote, "His knowledge of hadith came from al-Bukhari."[16] At-Tirmidhi mentioned al-Bukhari's name 114 times in his Jami`. He used al-Bukhari's Kitab at-Tarikh as a source when mentioning discrepancies in the text of a hadith or its transmitters, and praised al-Bukhari as being the most knowledgeable person in Iraq or Khurasan in the science of discrepancies of hadith. When mentioning the rulings of jurists, he followed al-Bukhari's practice of not mentioning the name of Abu Hanifah. Because he never received a reliabe chain of narrators to mention Abu Hanifa's decrees, he would instead attribute them to "some people of Kufa." Al-Bukhari held at-Tirmidhi in high regard as well. He is reported to have told at-Tirmidhi, "I have profited more from you than you have from me," and in his Sahih he narrated two hadith from at-Tirmidhi. At-Tirmidhi also narrated some hadiths from Abu Dawud, and one from Muslim. Muslim also narrated one hadith from at-Tirmidhi in his own Sahih. A.J. Wensinck mentions Ahmad ibn Hanbal as among at-Tirmidhi's teachers. However, Hoosen states that according to the most reliable sources, at-Tirmidhi never went to Baghdad, nor did he attend any lectures of Ahmad ibn Hanbal. Furthermore, at-Tirmidhi never directly narrates from Ahmad ibn Hanbal in his Jami'. Several of at-Tirmidhi's teachers also taught al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, and an-Nasa'i. Extremely rare. Second Edition (Probably). (This Edition not in Özege; for other 2 editions see Özege 14271).
