‎YUSUF IZZEDDIN Ottoman prince 1857 1916.‎

‎IMPORTANT AUTOGRAPH LETTER BY OTTOMAN PRINCE Autograph letter signed 'Yusuf Izzeddin' to 'Birder Efendi' who was his brother prince of the Ottoman dynasty.‎

‎No Binding. Very Good. Original autograph letter signed ALS by Ottoman prince Sehzde Yusuf Izzeddin to his brother probably Mehmed Seyfeddin Efendi 1867-1899. 27x17 cm. In Ottoman script. 1 p. 11 lines. Used a pencil. Full. Written on a "Toneywood Linen" watermarked paper. Sehzde Yusuf Izzeddin was an Ottoman prince the son of Sultan Abdlaziz and his first wife Drrnev Kadin. Sehzade Yusuf Izzeddin was born on 29 September 1857 in the Dolmabahe Palace. His father was Sultan Abdlaziz who was then a prince and his mother was Drrnev Kadin eldest daughter of Prince Mahmud Dziaps-lpa and his wife Princess Halime ikotua. He had a full sister Saliha Sultan five years younger than him. He was brought up concealed in the villa of Kadir Bey molla of Mecca located in Eyp. His birth was kept a secret until his father ascended the throne in 1861. Izzeddin's early education took place in the Prince's School Dolmabahe Palace. His tutors were Miralay Sleyman Bey mer Efendi Tophane Mfti mer Lutfi Efendi Gazi Ahmed Muhtar Pasha and Grc Serif Efendi. He took his French lessons from the Sultan's head doctor Marko Pasha and Sakizli Ohannes Pasha's son-in-law Sarl. In 1871 at the age of fourteen Izzeddin was commander of the Fourth Army Anatolian Army with the rank of Marshal and soon after was appointed commander of the First Army the Imperial Army. After his accession to the throne Prince Murad future Sultan Murad V became heir to the throne. However Abdlaziz began considering changing the rule of succession in favor of Izzeddin. For this purpose Abdlaziz set out to mollify different pressure groups and have his son gain popularity among them. During the 1867 visit to Europe rumors spread that contrary to the rules of protocol Abdlaziz arranged Izzeddin's reception in Paris and London before the official heir Prince Murad. Izzeddin's father Abdlaziz was deposed by his ministers on 30 May 1876 and his nephew Murad became the Sultan. He was transferred to Feriye Palace the next day. On 4 June 1876 Abdlaziz died under mysterious circumstances. As both of Emine Sultan Izzeddin's half-sister parents died in the summer of 1876 when she was not yet two years old Izzeddin raised her in his household. Izzeddin's cousin Sultan Abdul Hamid II was suspicious of him and for this reason had a police station built opposite his country house. Izzeddin and Prince Vahideddin future Mehmed VI had a rivalry with each other. Though coldly polite to each other they refused to share the same carriage even for the ceremonies of the state. Vahideddin especially insisted on being considered the second heir apparent. Yusuf Izzeddin suffered from his role and lived his later years in a kind of paranoia until he committed suicide his cause of death is still under debate: murder or suicide on 1 February 1916 in his villa at Zincirlikuyu Istanbul. <br/> <br/> unknown‎

‎Istanbul: Original Manuscript. 1324 Safer AH 1908. No Binding. Very Good. Original color manuscript calendar prepared on a fine special paper with 'ahar'. 36x225 cm. In Ottoman script Turkish with Arabic letters. 2 p. Several ink stains on paper chipped on extremities. A very good manuscript. It shows astronomic situations locations of planets and stars and climates in 1324 AD 1908. It starts with high praise to Sultan Abdlhamid II with an old style of color moon & crescent icon. Sealed by Mehmed Pasazde A. Ihsan. On the verso of paper can be seen detailed calendar and details of 'ruzname'. Written on 'printed' down of the paper probably it's prepared for the printing therefore it's understood that Ihsan and Refet were thinking to print this 'taqwim'. Prepared in the year of the Second Constitutional Regime II. Mesrutiyet which was Abdul Hamid II's fall came as a result of the 1908 Young Turk Revolution and the Young Turks put the 1876 Constitution back into effect. It seems it's prepared before fall of the Sultan and for the present to the Sultan. The Second Constitutional Period spanned from 1908 until after World War I when the Ottoman Empire was dissolved. "The starting year of the Hijr calendar al-taqwim al-hijri the fundamental Islamic lunar calendar still in use among Muslims until today is 622 CE. Its beginning corresponds to the Hijra or emigration of Prophet Muhammed and his followers from Mecca to Medina. It is based on the revolution of the moon around the Earth and consists of twelve months of 29 or 30 days: Muharram 30 Safar 29 Rab' al-awwal 30 Rabi' al-thani 29 Jumda al-awwal 30 Jumda al-thani 29 Rajab 30 Sha'ban 29 Ramadhan 30 Shawwal 29 Dhul-'l-qi'da 30 and Dhul-hijja 29 or 30. The lunar year consists of 354 days which is 11 days less than the solar year and every 33 years it falls one year behind the Gregorian calendar. The discrepancy with the solar year which follows the seasons meant that Muslim countries also used the solar calendar and some calendars drawn up by astronomers include the dates according to the European Gregorian calendar named after Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Ottoman Turkey used both the Islamic lunar calendar and a solar calendar known as the Rum or Roman calendar which was based on the Julian calendar introduced since the times of Julius Caesar in 46 BC. The Roman calendar was inherited from the Byzantines and was used by the Ottomans for the taxation of agricultural revenues. The year according to the Rum or Julian calendar began on 1 March and the Ottomans took the starting year to be that of the Hijra. To make up for the gain of 11 days made by the solar Rum calendar over the Islamic calendar a leap year was deducted from the Rum calendar every 33 years. A rzname is a set of tables giving the first days of the months in both the Islamic and Rum calendars the date on which the sun enters each sign of the zodiac and eclipses of the sun and moon. Also known as takvm-i dim perpetual calendar or takvm-i devr-i dim calendar of perpetual motion the ruzname were permanently valid whatever the year. There is no evidence that such calendars were produced in pre-Ottoman times and they may therefore be regarded as a type unique to Ottoman Turkey.". ‎MESSRS I. CAMONDO ET CIE ON BEHALF OF PROBABLY MOISE DE CAMONDO Ottoman Empire born French banker art collector and philanthro‎

‎Autograph letter signed.‎

‎Constantinople: I. Camondo & Cie Constantinople Letterhead. 17 Janvier 1901 1901. No Binding. Very Good. Original autograph letter signed ALS by P.pon "We hereby declare that Ms. L. Cassinelli occupied our house located in Pera Rue Hodja Ali No 19. On December 1 1887 and left him on September 30 1899. That during all time he did not pay me the tax. P. pon de la succession de feu le Comte A. de Camondo. i.e. On behalf of the succession of Count Abraham Salomon Camondo 1781-1873. Probably it's signed by his advocate of Moise de Camondo. Recipient is not defined. Letter indicates one of Camondo family's houses in Pera Constantinople. 265x21 cm. Completely in French. 14 lines. On a paper watermarked "William Brown & Co. London". William Brown and Co. were located in London in this 'St. Mary Axe and 40 to 41 Old Broad Street London E.C.' address according to Grace's guide to British industrial industry; they worked on 'Lithographic and Letterpress Printers'. 1887 Registered as a Limited Company. Count Mose de Camondo 1860-1935 was an Ottoman Empire-born French banker and art collector. He was a member of the prominent Camondo family. As a child Camondo moved with his family from their home in Constantinople Ottoman Empire to Paris around 1869 where he grew up and continued the career of his father Nissim de Camondo 1830-1889 as a banker. He was born into a Sephardic Jewish family that owned one of the largest banks in the Ottoman Empire established in France since 1869. Starting in 1911 he completely rebuilt the family's Parisian mansion on the Parc Monceau in order to house his collection of 18th-century French furniture and artwork. Working closely with the architect Ren Sergent he created a palatial home conforming to certain 18th-century traditions even planning the room dimensions to match exactly the objects in his collection. The entryway is inspired by the Petit Trianon of Versailles. The home includes a kosher kitchen with separate sections for meat and dairy. The dining room includes a beautifully-carved green marble fountain in the shape of a shell with a dolphin spigot for the ritual washing of hands before eating a meal. Some highlights of his collection include a French silver service that had been ordered by Russian Empress Catherine the Great a set of Buffon porcelain with exact reproductions of ornithological drawings from the Svres manufacturer and perhaps the only existing complete set of Gobelin royal tapestry sketches. He married Irne Cahen d'Anvers daughter of Louis Cahen d'Anvers in 1891. They separated in August 1897 after her affair with de Camondo's stable master Count Charles Sampieri whom she would later marry and divorce. The children Nissim and Beatrice remained with de Camondo. The mansion was completed in 1914 but his son did not reside there very long as he rejoined the French Army to fight in The Great War. It had been de Camondo's great hope that his son whom he adored would take over the family empire. Following Nissim's death in 1917 de Camondo closed all banking activities. He largely withdrew from society and devoted himself primarily to his collection and to hosting dinners for a club of gourmets at regular intervals. Camondo died in 1935 and the museum opened the following year. He donated the home to Paris's Decorative Arts society as a museum Muse Nissim de Camondo in honor of the loss of his son Nissim in World War I. In addition to the collection the meticulously-restored service areas elevator and woodwork of the mansion are noteworthy. During the German occupation of France during World War II his daughter Batrice his son-of-law Lon Reinach and their children Fanny and Bertrand were deported from France and died in the Auschwitz concentration camp. As a result the de Camondo family died out. <br/> <br/> I. Camondo & Cie, Constantinople Letterhead., 17 Janvier 1901 unknown‎

‎MEHMED REFI Ottoman diplomat and statesman 18 19th century.‎

‎IRANIAN BOOK OF EMBASSY: ALLIANCE OF NAPOLEON AND THE SUBLIME PORT AGAINST RUSSIA Iran sefaretnmesi.‎

‎Istanbul: Hill Matbaasi. AH 1333 1917. 1st Edition . Leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall. Modern 1/4 leather bound in Ottoman lettered gilt. Large Roy. 8vo. 25 x 18 cm. In Ottoman script. 31 p. Roumi: 1333 = Gregorian: 1917. Some of the books of the embassy are only about how they fulfill their embassy duties. The "Iranian Book of Embassy" 1807 by Sayyid Mehmet Refi 'Efendi is an example of this. The embassy of Mehmed Refi 'Efendi d.1224 was sent as an ambassador to Iran by the Ottoman Empire in 1222/1807 is the work of the tradition of writing an embassy book which emerged as a result of new style diplomatic relations. This Iranian embassy book provides information about the Ottoman-Iranian political relations as well as the diplomatic tradition of both countries the political history of Europe and many other areas. Napoleon who was also fighting against Russia in Europe evaluated this situation as a suitable opportunity and at his request by Bab-i Ali i.e. The Sublime Port Seyyid Mehmed Refi Efendi decided to send him to Iran as an ambassador. The duty of Refi Efendi who was sent to Iran by the Ottoman State was to bring an "alliance to Russia" between the Ottoman Empire and Iran and France. According to the information he gave in his book Refi Efendi set out from Dersaadet to Iran on May 23 1807. On the first day of the "Zilkadde" month of the same year 30 December 1807 Thursday he returned to "Daru'l-hilafe Kostantiniyye". In his book Refi Efendi explains why he was sent to Iran. In the face of the anarchy in Istanbul Refi Efendi decided to go with him to consult with seraskier Yusuf Pasha who is in charge of carrying out the operation against the Russians in order to continue or return. Thus when he came to Erzurum on the way back Seraskier Yusuf Pasha was on the border of Arpaayi which was 12 hours away from Kars city with a great army against the Russians. Refi Efendi talks about an attack against the Russians and a retreat towards Kars upon the subsequent defeat. After that Refi Efendi was allowed to set off for Iran and moved from Kars with a hundred soldiers appointed by Pasha. After a two-week journey he arrived at the tent of the prince's vizier Mirza Bozorg and chatted together on a Friday. Soonly after he was admitted to the presence of Prince Abbas Mirza where Mirza Bozorg read aloud the letter brought by Refi Efendi. The book ends with this meeting. ‎DOKTOR NAMI A Turkish/ Ottoman Freemason and doctor 19. 20th century.‎

‎MANUSCRIPT Ma.:.luk Masonluk hakkinda duygu ve dsncelerim. i. e. My feelings and thoughts on Freemasonry.‎

‎Istanbul: ca. 1920s 1920. No Binding. Very Good. 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall. Original manuscript on freemasonry. 28x21 cm. In Ottoman script Turkish with Arabic letters. 3 p. Chipped on margins folded. Otherwise a very good manuscript. Written on a paper watermarked "Labor: Extra Strong Bank". It includes "How should a Mason be and act" it gives some hints on the last Ottoman Freemasonry. The history of Freemasonry in Turkey stretches back to the 18th century under Ottoman imperial rule. The first lodge in Turkey was probably established around 1721 in Istanbul by Levantines. Although Freemasonry in Turkey can be traced into the 18th century for much of that time it was limited to lodges under the jurisdiction of foreign grand lodges and there was no independent Turkish Grand Lodge. This changed in 1856 when the first Turkish Grand Lodge was established. Sultan Murad V was a member of the lodge becoming the first and only Ottoman sultan to join. This first Grand Lodge was banned in 1876 by Murad's successor Sultan Abdulhamit Han. The Grand Lodge came back in 1909 in Istanbul under a new administration. Because the Grand Lodge was used to operate in secret it was closed again in 1922 only to be opened in the year 1925 again. In 1935 the Grand Lodge has closed again. As a result of the repeated closures the former Grand Lodge and its members were reluctant to support Kemal Atatrk's reformist policies. Source: Wikipedia. ‎MUSTAFA HALIM OZYAZICI Ottoman / Turkish calligrapher 1898 1964.‎

‎Autograph paper signed 'Hattat el-Hac Mustafa Halim'.‎

‎Istanbul: pre-1928. Soft cover. Fine. Original manuscript paper with its decorative frame. Paper size: 75x13 cm; frame size: 19x24 cm. In Ottoman script. 1 p. Signature of Halim by his very calligraphic style with 'Hattat el-Hac' title and seen one sentence down of paper: 'Gnderilen meblagi mtesekkir aldim hrmetlerim efendim' i.e. 'I received the amount sent thanks and gratitude'. Mustafa Halim zyazici was an Ottoman calligrapher and one of the last of the classical Ottoman calligraphers using the Arabic script. He was a versatile calligrapher with a high level of expertise in many styles of script but was widely regarded as a master jeli-thuluth. He is most noted for his work on various restoration projects of both manuscripts and public buildings. He was born Mustafa Abdlhalim on 14 January 1898 in the Hazeki district of Istanbul. He was the son of Nalinci Haci Ceml Efendi originally from Crimea and his mother was Sudanese. He was educated at Glsen Junior High School where he was given lessons in calligraphy by Hamid Ayta who recognised his talent and encouraged him to pursue calligraphy as a career. He later studied drawing and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul. His formal calligraphy studies were with Hasan Riza Effendi 1849-1920 and Kamil Akdik 1862-1941 where he mastered the thuluth nasih and riq scripts. In 1916 he was drafted into the Army. After completing basic training he worked in the Military Printing Department and also worked in Evkf-i Islmiyye Printing Press. Following his discharge from the Army in 1924 he opened an office in Bbili Street The Sublime Porte where he prepared all types of calligraphy; business cards seals and book covers. He also taught in various schools around the Cagaloglu district of Istanbul. From 1927 he was employed in the Imperial Chancery. When the Latin alphabet replaced Arabic lettering in 1928 he applied to go to Egypt where classical calligraphy using Arabic script was still valued but his application was rejected in 1929. He subsequently abandoned calligraphy altogether. However during the 1940s his skills in classical calligraphy found an outlet when he became part of a major restoration project which worked on repairs to numerous manuscripts in a variety of styles and the restoration of calligraphic reliefs and monumental art in historic public buildings including many mosques. In 1948 he was appointed to the position of 'old writing teacher' at the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul; a position he retained until his retirement in 1963. One of his responsibilities was to write the diplomas for those who were about to graduate from the Academy. He died on 30 September 1964 ten days after being involved in a traffic accident. He was buried in the Kozlu Cemetery. Although he developed expertise in many different types of script he was regarded as a master of jeli-thuluth script. He wrote a number of exercise books for students to practice scripts in nesih thuluth-nesih riq'a diwn and jeli diwn and which were part of a program designed to promote the art of calligraphy. These books are still being printed and distributed to students of calligraphy. <br/> <br/> pre-1928 paperback‎

In Ottoman script. 3 p. MANUSCRIPT Autograph document stamped by Ottoman accounting manager 'Ahmed Vefik' related to sunken Tokat Tokad torpedo boat during in the Battle of Preveza. The Battle of Preveza in September 1911 was the first naval engagement fought during the Italo-Turkish War. Five Italian Soldato-class destroyers encountered five Ottoman ships off the Greek port of Preveza. Over the course of two days four of the Turkish vessels present were sunk or captured and the city was bombarded. On September 29 just after the beginning of the war the Italian fleet in the Ionian Sea began searching for Ottoman warships. At about 4:00 pm an hour or so after war was declared five Italian destroyers under Prince Luigi Amedeo sighted two enemy torpedo boats at sea in between Corfu and Preveza. Outnumbered the Ottomans opened fire but soon after chose to flee without making any hits. The torpedo boat Tokat steered north chased by three destroyers while Anatolia headed south followed by the remaining two Italian ships. After several moments of firing Tokat ran aground near Nicopolis. She had been hit fifteen times caught on fire and was completely destroyed by additional Italian rounds. Original sepia toning photograph of Sultan Abdlmecid. Written 'Padisah sultan Aziz. Babamin yaninda alisdigi padisah' on right-down of the photo. Abdlmecid I or Sultan Abdlmecid the Reorganizer due to the Tanzimat reforms he conducted he is also known as Abdulmejid and similar spellings was the 31st Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and succeeded his father Mahmud II on 2 July 1839. His reign was notable for the rise of nationalist movements within the empire's territories. Abdulmejid wanted to encourage Ottomanism among the secessionist subject nations and stop the rise of nationalist movements within the empire but failed to succeed despite trying to integrate non-Muslims and non-Turks more thoroughly into Ottoman society with new laws and reforms. He tried to forge alliances with the major powers of Western Europe namely the United Kingdom and France who fought alongside the Ottoman Empire in the Crimean War against Russia. In the following Congress of Paris on 30 March 1856 the Ottoman Empire was officially included among the European family of nations. Abdulmejid's biggest achievement was the announcement and application of the Tanzimat reorganization reforms which were prepared by his father and effectively started the modernization of the Ottoman Empire in 1839. For this achievement one of the Imperial anthems of the Ottoman Empire the March of Abdulmejid was named after him. <br/> <br/> Original Sepia Photograph of Sultan Abdulmecid., [ca. 1860] hardcover‎

Mousouros became the first ambassador of the Ottoman Empire to the newly independent Kingdom of Greece in 1840 a position he kept until 1848. In 1847-48 he was a central figure in the events known as Mousourika which led to his temporary recall and the breakdown of relations between the two states. Well educated in 1883 Mousouros translated Dante's Divine Comedy into ancient Greek. He was married and had a son Stephanos Mousouros who later became Prince of Samos. Wikipedia. He is known as the first translator of Dante's Divine Comedy into modern Greek. Musurus Pasha had an intellectual identity. One of the most important occupations of Musurus Pasha in the last years was the translation of Dante's Divine Comedy from Italian to Greek. Being able to translate a work of Italian classics and masterpieces of western literature should be an indication of Musurus Pasha's performance and intellectual dimension. Due to negative statements about Muhammad and Ali in Dante's work the book was not allowed to be published within the Ottoman Imperial borders. Despite this Musurus Pasha asked him to be permitted to publish his translation but it was not accepted. Source: Bir Tanzimat diplomati Kostaki Musurus Pasa 1807-1891. NURDAN SAFAK. ‎LEYLA HANIM Turkish / Ottoman poetess ? 1848.‎

‎OTTOMAN POETESS in LITOGRAPH by BULAQ PRINTINGHOUSE Divn-i Leyl Hanim.‎

‎Istanbul: Bulaq Matbaasi AH 1260 1844. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall. In contemporary cloth bdg. Roy. 8vo. 24 x 17 cm. In Ottoman script. 43 59 p. Divan literature is described as "a certain tradition literature with its rules and boundaries" in the most general form. These rules and boundaries have enabled the formation of common expressions in religion and in Sufi intellection in particular and in poetry by the influence of Persian literature and they have made it traditional in time. In this context in classical Turkish poetry whose male poets are predominant in quality and quantity patriarchal rhetoric presents an outlook that its frame has been established by common tropes metaphors poetic themes and in short by similar imaginations and ideas. The divans of Lady Mihri died after 1512 Lady Leyla died in 1848 and Lady Seref 1809-1861 have different aesthetic understandings in that context. Layl Hanim was one of the few Turkish women poets who made a collection of her poems. Lived in Istanbul and died in 1848. Her family was close to the Ottoman Sultanate and Leyl Hanim witnessed the reign of Mahmud II 1808-1839 and Abdlmecid I 1839-1861. She is the daughter of Moralizde Hmid Efendi. Her mother Hadce Hanim is the sister of Keecizde Izzet Molla a notable bureucrat and poet of the times. She has three brothers Atullah Mehmed Efendi Nurullah Mehmed Efendi and Hlid Efendi who died at a young age. She had financial problems after her father's death and she expressed those in her poems. Some of her poems in the divan mention that her father and brother Hlid Efendi have lived in Bursa for a while. She is educated by Keecizde Izzet Molla she is quick-witted. She experienced a short marriage which lasted about a week; after the divorce she devoted herself to poetry. Her grave is in Galata Mevlevhanesi. Gzide Sabri Aygn was a Turkish female writer known for her romance novels which were published in multiple editions and several languages. Gzife Sabri was born to Salih resat a civil servant at the Ottoman Justice Ministry and his spouse Nigar in Findikli quarter of Istanbul then Ottoman Empire in 1886. She had two sisters Fatma Aliye and Emine Semiye. She grew up in amlica neighborhood of Istanbul. In later years she had to leave Istanbul and move to Anatolia with her family as her father was exiled resulted from his opposition to the despotism of Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II reigned 1876-1909. At a young age she was married to Ahmet Sabri Aygn the first notary of Beyoglu. She was educated at home by special tutors. She was interested in literature inspired by her teacher Hodja Tahir Effendi a dictionary writer. She started to write in her very young age. However her teachers proposed her to better deal with the religious matters instead of poetry. Contrary to the pressures of her literature teacher she wrote her first novel Mnevver in her youth years in 1899. She wrote the novel in remembrance of her friend who died from tuberculosis. It was serialized in the newspaper Hanimlara Mahsus "For Ladies" and won well recognition. In 1901 two years later the novel was published as book and was also translated into Serbian language. Her husband felt discomfort by his wife's prominence. As her teachers' reaction was not enough her husband also objected to her writing. However her enthusiasm could not deter her from writing. It is understood that her husband tried to prevent her writing as he did not allow her to write already at the wedding. She was forced to continue writing at night or secretly. After a short time her husband died. The unexpected death of her husband left deep traces in her. Gzide Sabri became a female writer who remained lifelong unhappy having a sad life in the literature history. During this time the Servet-i Fnun "Wealth of Knowledge" movement formed by Recaizade Mahmud Ekrem 1847-1914 and his students left its mark on the literature. Gzide Sabri was one of the authors who did not join the movement and remained on their own line. She is considered as one of the first female novelist among the Turkish writers with widespread fame even though she was not involved in the new literary movement. She published her works in the Servet-i Fnun and other journals of the "National Literature" without being a member of any literary community. Her novels which were written in the early years of the Second Constitutional Era 1908-1918 and the Republican era from 1922 and were subject of feeling dream blind love and broken hearts were very popular and had multiple editions and were repeatedly filmed. Her second novel lms Bir Kadinin Evrak-i Metrkesi "Derelict Documents of a Dead For Woman" was a bestseller. It was first published in 1901 reprinted several times and was filmed twice in 1956 and then in 1969. The novel was translated into Armenian language. She authored romance novels for simple readers. Her 1930-novel Hicran Gecesi "Night of Sorrow" is about the forbidden love of a bad woman. This book takes the romance novel one step forward in forbidden impossible love story. ‎LEYLA HANIM Turkish / Ottoman poetess ? 1848.‎

‎OTTOMAN POETESS in LITOGRAPH Divn-i Leyl Hanim.‎

‎Istanbul: Der Sirket-i Iraniye Destghi Han-i Vlide Matbaasi. AH 1299 1882. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall. Full leaher bdg. with Ottoman lettered gilt. Roy. 8vo. 24 x 17 cm. In Ottoman script. 118 p. In Ottoman script. Mehmed Said Pasha was an Ottoman monarchist senator statesman and editor of the Turkish newspaper Jerid-i-Havadis. He supported the CUP the political party which came to power after the Ottoman coup d'tat of 1913. His origin comes from 'Sebazde family' from Ankara. He became first secretary to Sultan Abdul Hamid II shortly after the Sultan's accession and is said to have contributed to the realizations of his majesty's design of concentrating power in his own hands; later he became successively minister of the interior and then governor of Bursa reaching the high post of grand vizier in 1879. He was grand vizier seven more times under Abdul Hamid II and once under his successor Mehmed V. He was known for his opposition to the extension of foreign influence in Turkey. n 1896 he took refuge at the British embassy in Constantinople and though then assured of his personal liberty and safety remained practically a prisoner in his own house. He came into temporary prominence again during the revolution of 1908. On 22 July he succeeded Mehmed Ferid Pasha as grand vizier but on the 6 August was replaced by the more liberal Kmil Pasha at the insistence of the Young Turks. Also during 1908 Mehmed Said Pasha bought the famed Istanbul arcade in the Beyoglu Pera district today known as iek Pasaji "Flower Passage". The modern name became common in the 1940s; during Mehmed Said Pasha's ownership in the 1900s and 1910s the arcade was known as Sait Pasa Pasaji "Said Pasha Passage". During the Italian crisis in 1911-12 he was again called to the premiership. He was again removed from power by the Savior Officers who backed the Freedom and Accord Party Liberal Union against the Committee of Union and Progress and replaced by a new cabinet supported by the Officers and the Freedom and Accord Party. "Accusons rception de votre honoree du 25 m.p. sont le contenu nous tromous conforme aux commandes faites par votre M.eur Nicolas Guentcheff.". After that introduction there's a short list: Poissons: Scoumuri Palamond Toric. 'Tarama' 'Marmeredjik' and Charan Ak-cheir and Bandirma caviars. Haci Tahir Bey who came from Bahesaray Bakhchysarai in the Crimea with his entire family was one of many refugees. And he faced all the difficulties both of exile and of resettlement. As soon as he arrived Tahir Bey found himself in the heart of Istanbul's commercial life; however carving himself a niche was easier said than done. At first he dealt in provisions; in 1859 he became a tobacco trader in the neighborhood of Langa Kapisi also known as Yeni Kapi in Istanbul. Soon unfortunately he found that established local merchants were unhappy with the competition and complained to the Municipality. In turn the Municipality ruled that provided they did not engage in illegal activities Tahir Bey and the rest of the refugees should be allowed to conduct their business unmolested. Just as he found no peace in his business dealings Tahir Bey was not left alone in Zekeriyaky where he and his family had settled. According to members of the present generation of his family his home was attacked by some local gangs so that they were forced to move to neighboring Sariyer. Around the same time he moved his place of business to Unkapani and his son Ali Nuri married the daughter of the owner of the historical Public Bath hamam of Sariyer. The profession of Ali Nuri Bey's father-in-law gave the family its surname as well as a brand name that would command respect for more than a century. Ali Nuri Bey continued in his father's footsteps gradually becoming the kind of entrepreneur that the Ottoman Empire sorely needed. The 1880s witnessed his earliest ventures as he began to deal in provisions near Unkapani and established the first incarnation of what would later become Hamamcioglu Messeseleri Ticaret Trk A.S. in the form of a sole proprietorship located in the commercial building Limon Han in the Ttngmrk neighborhood of the district of Eminn. In 1885 his son Nuri Ali joined the firm. At this date a commercial yearbook makes mention of "Ali H." a dealer in oil and rice at No. 36 Cambazhane Avenue. While we are unable to determine for certain whether or not this listing refers to a member of the Hamamcioglu family the same commercial directory for the year 1896-1897 does refer to "Hamamcioglu Ali" as a merchant based at No. 85 Osman Efendi Han. Over the next few years the firm moved a number of times within the same building: thus it was listed at No. 75 in 18985 No. 3 in 19016 and No. 9 in 1909. Starting in the 1910s the firm Hamamcizadeler or as it is now known Hamamcioglu ventured into different business areas at different locations with a speed that makes it difficult to follow its precise trajectory. For example a receipt from the wholesale fish market dated 1911 points to the family's interest in seafood. On the other hand a document dated August 1914 now preserved in the Ottoman Archives orders that the olives in the warehouses belonging to Hamamcizade Ali Bey in the towns of Gemlik and Kursunlu should be guarded indicating that the firm had a rather broad range of interests within the food sector.8 A listing of businesses registered at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1923 describes "Hamamci Zade Nuri Ali" still located in the commercial building Osman Efendi as dealing in "fish etc." 9 It is safe to assume that this qualification refers to all kinds of seafood -including salted fish dried fish caviar.
