The city of Bursa, situated in the north-west of Turkey, has been for millennia a settlement area at the intersection of travel and trade routes. From 1335 to 1363 it was the capital of the Ottoman State. IRCICA has published a deluxe album of photographs of Bursa dating from the period of Sultan Abdulhamid II, i.e. from the end of the 19th-beginning of the 20th century. The photographs were selected from the collections contained in the archives of IRCICA. The album contains photographs of districts, gates, mosques, tombs, fountains, roads, bridges, ceremonies, personalities. There is also a section on "Photographers and Photograph Studios". This album appeared in the 2011 Evliya Celebi Year declared by UNESCO, since for Evliya Celebi (1611-1684) Bursa was of special importance. It was the first city that he visited outside Istanbul and one of the very few he traveled to specifically to learn about it. The level of artistic achievement attained in the Chora frescoes parallels the Pre-Renaissance movement that began in Italy and heralds the advent of a new style in Byzantine art. Chora: The Scroll of Heaven takes the reader on a scholarly and artistic journey that delves all the details of this jewel-like structure. The book's text was written by Cyril Mango, one of the most respected names today in the field of Byzantine art history, while its photographs were taken by Ahmet Ertug, an internationally recognized architect and photographer. The photographs appearing in the book were exhibited at the International Byzantine Congress held in Paris in 2002, where they received many accolades. Kenan Eren wrote about Aphrodisias, Volkmar Von Graeve-Hasibe Akat Islam about Miletus, Suat Ateslier about the other ancient cities, Murat Çekilmez about sculpture in and around Aydin and Mükerrem Kürüm about Aydin's architectural heritage. If we have succeeded in conveying the soul of the city of Aydin, which makes such an indelible impression with its sea, nature and cultural heritage, we shall be very happy.
