A study on Gentile Bellini, (1430-1507), was an Italian painter of the school of Venice. He came from Venice's leading family of painters, and at least in the early part of his career was more highly regarded than his younger brother Giovanni Bellini, the reverse of the case today. From 1474 he was the official portrait artist for the Doges of Venice, and as well as his portraits he painted a number of very large subjects with multitudes of figures, especially for the Scuole Grandi of Venice, wealthy confraternities that were very important in Venetian patrician social life. In 1479 he was sent to Constantinople by the Venetian government when the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II requested an artist; he returned the next year. Thereafter a number of his subjects were set in the East, and he is one of the founders of the Orientalist tradition in Western painting. His portrait of the Sultan was also copied in paintings and prints and became known all over Europe.

Scholars such as Abu Bakr Effendi, Mahmud Fakih Emin Effendi and Ottoman Consul-Generals Ohannes Majakyan Effendi, Mehmet Remzi Bey strengthened the relationship between the Ottoman Empire and South Africa, as far as Mauritius Island. The Noor'ul Osmaniya Mosque, Ottoman Cricket Club, Noor'ul Hamidiyya Mosque in Cape Town and many Ottoman graves in South Africa are evidence of the Ottoman presence and traces in the region. Ottoman emissaries and Muslim theologians left a siginficant cultural legacy in Southern Africa. This cultural and Islamic legacy has yet to be woven into South African historiography. The right of issuing banknote has always been considered as a precious privilege during the history. This privilege, which was conceded to Ottoman Bank asa a state bank in the last period of the Ottoman Empire, was granted to the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey which was established on October 3, 1931 by Law No: 1715 dated June 11, 1930. Until the Republic of Turkey issued the first banknotes in E1 emission group, on December 5, 1927, the "Evrak-i Nakdiye", which inhereted from Ottoman Empire, were in circulation. As the banknotes of E1 emission group had been printed before the date of adoption of Latin alphabet on November 1, 1928, the main text of these of these banknotes was printed in Arabic and denominations were in French. Since 1937, the Central Bank of the Republic of the Republic of Turkey has put into circulation the banknotes that were printed in Latin alphabet in E2, E3, E4, E5, E6 and E7 emission groups. Our banknotes were printed in England, Germany and the United States of America until 1958, the year banknote printing plant commenced producing banknotes. Today, all kinds of design, plate making and printing works that require deep experience have been carried out by Banknote Printing works that has its own equipment and professional staff. "The Banknote Catalogue of the Republic of Turkey" is presented as a useful source, in which you can find the pictures and brief information of all banknotes issued in the republican period. Ottoman Arcadia: The Hamidian Expedition to the land of tribal roots (1886). Ömer M. Koç Collection.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the book examines the locations where the Ottoman Empire was founded, and the meanings attributed to these in the past and in the nineteenth century. It includes articles by expert researchers and academicians, Selim Deringil, T.G. Otte, Sinan Kuneralp, Ahmet Ersoy (co-curator), Deniz Türker (co-curator), Beatrice St. Laurent, Resat Kasaba, and Berin Gölönü. In the articles, they study the foundation myths, the relationship among history, memory and representation through nomads of Anatolia, monuments, and architectural works in the earliest settlements of the empire as well as late 19th century European-Ottoman diplomatic relations. In addition, many of the photographs and artifacts from the exhibition can be found as high-quality reproductions in an addendum in the book. Ottoman Arcadia focuses on three volumes of photography albums commissioned by Sultan Abdulhamid II via an official expedition in 1886, which were gifted to the German chancellor Otto von Bismarck. The original photographs bearing handwritten informative captions in Ottoman Turkish and French on them will be on display for the first time alongside with the documents, images, and publications from various collections. The album photographs document dramatic landscapes, towns, monuments of the early Ottoman settlements like Yenisehir, Sogut, Bozuyuk; and the first capital of the empire, Bursa. The native inhabitants of the region ¿particularly the last remaining members of the semi-nomadic Turkmen tribes (yörüks) are also recorded in the albums. Through the strong, persuasive capacity of photography, the exhibition reassert foundational myths and authenticate the remote tribal origins of the ottoman dynasty. Following the documentary traces of the 1886 Expedition, Ottoman Arcadia investigates the ways in which the layered deposit of memories attached to the land of Ottoman origins was reclaimed through the agency of photography.

Seyhülislâm merhûm Cemâleddin Efendi hazretlerinin hatirât-i siyâsiyesi. His father, Sheikh Yusufzâde Hâlid Efendi, was a member of the judiciary and served as Kazasker and as a minister. His mother was a member of the Kevabibiye family and a daughter of Mehmed Said Efendi. Mehmet Cemaleddin was educated in Ottoman and Islamic law, and served in the Ottoman judiciary as Kadi (Chief Judge) of Constantinople in 1884. He was appointed Chief Judge of Anatolia (Anadolu Kazaskeri) in 1888 and Chief Judge of Rumelia, the European parts of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans, in 1890. On 4 September 1891, at the age of 43, he was appointed Seyhülislam, the Cabinet Minister in charge of religious and legal matters. He remained in this post for 16 years and 11 months, and was later reappointed on three other occasions for shorter periods, holding this post for a total of nearly 18 years, and becoming the second-longest holder of this post in Ottoman history, after Ali Zembilli Efendi. His son-in-law was the noted Turkish surgeon and mayor of Constantinople Prof. Cemil Topuzlu, also known as Cemil Pasha, whose name was given to a major boulevard in modern Istanbul, "Cemil Topuzlu Caddesi" and to a municipal amphitheatre Cemil Topuzlu Harbiye Amphitheatre. Mehmet Cemaleddin's younger brother Ibrahim Sami Bey, was a member of the Ottoman Council of State or Sura-yi Devlet whose grandson Erol Gelenbe is the Dennis Gabor Chair Professor at Imperial College, London. An opponent of the pro-German and war-oriented policy of the Union and Progress Party, Mehmed Cemalettin Efendi was exiled to Egypt in 1913, and died in Ramleh, Egypt, on 5 April 1917, at the age of 79. When his body was brought to Constantinople, it lay in state at the Topkapi Palace, and he is now buried at the Edirnekapi Shehitlik Cemetery. This memoirs book of him includes his politic memoirs. Presented here of the first time in English is a translation of Mehmed Fuad Köprülü's important work of Turkish historiography and history, Some Observations on the Influence of Byzantine Instutions on Ottoman Institutions. This work was originally published more than half a century ago, in 1931. Despite the years and the more recent research that has been done on this subject, Köprülü's work retains considerable interest to Byzantinists, Ottomanists and Islamicts. Indeed, it can be regarded as the starting point for the modern study of the social, economic and relationship between Byzantium and the Ottoman Empire, and for the modern study of the historical development of Turkish institutions in general.
