Officials moved valuable artworks--including thousands of sumptuous Qur'an (Koran) manuscripts and loose pages dating from the 7th to 17th century--to Istanbul to ensure their safety. Penned by celebrated calligraphers and embellished by skilled illuminators and bookbinders, these manuscripts are now housed in the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts (Türk ve slam Eserleri Müzesi or TIEM) in Istanbul, established in 1914. This story unfolds in "The Art of the Qur'an: Treasures from the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts," the companion publication to the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery's groundbreaking exhibition, the first major presentation of Qur'ans in the United States. The book's authors describe the formation of this one-of-a-kind collection and the history of TIEM, whose centuries-old records on patrons, calligraphers, illuminators, and provenance allow us to create "biographies" detailing the production of the Qur'ans in the exhibition. Essays address the Qur'an as a written text--from content and organization to the elaborate calligraphy and illuminated designs that transformed the volumes into beautiful artworks. "The Art of the Qur'an "also includes in-depth descriptions of some seventy works from TIEM and the Smithsonian's Sackler and Freer Galleries. The book focuses on the impact of wartime conditions on life in a city of nearly a million citizens, with a specific emphasis on public order, crime and punishment. The author, Deniz Dölek-Sever, takes us through a six-chapter panorama of four years of hardship in the Ottoman capital during the war, analyzing various aspects of public order, crime and punishment as experienced daily by both Muslim and non-Muslim inhabitants of Istanbul, and as perceived by the state. In doing so, her study uncovers inner workings behind state officials' policies on public order and crime. Tracing instruments of surveillance and control and various crime categories, and making extensive use of primary sources, the work provides a unique understanding of public order and crime, as well as practices of punishment in a period when the Committee of Union and Progress reigned over the political life of the Ottoman Empire. Istanbul's Great War is an attempt to bring a fresh approach to the current literature on wartime Ottoman Empire.

Ahvâl-i gazavât der diyâr-i Bosna: The Bosnian frontier at wars of 1736-1739 Ottoman-Russo-Austro: A case study on Ömer Bosnavi's work. The book was accepted by YÖK as Master thesis in 2014 and published as book firstly by Lambert Press in January, 2016. After acceptance of thesis in 2014, a few studies published but Ömer Bosnavi's work was firstly published by me. Therefore first original transcription involve in that book. That study aims to offer an outline of the Ottoman-Russo-Austro War in 1736-1739 and also attempts to portray the Bosnia Frontier, an important subregion the Austro-Ottoman war. To provide a more detailed understanding of the Bosnian frontier, the first transcription of Ömer of Novi's "Ahval-i Gazavat Der Diyar-i Bosna" was included as a primary source in the study. While the Ottoman Empire was engaged in the Persian Wars in the 1730s, both Austrian and Russian Empires pursued a hostile policy the Ottoman Empire in accordance with the terms of a treaty of alliance in 1726. Upon the invasion of Crimea by Russians, the Ottomans declared a war against Russia in 1736. After Austria completed the preparations of the war, and joined in the battle on the side of Russia in 1737. In the beginning of the war, Austrians occupied the fortress of Nish and organized campaigns in such regions as Wallachia, Vidin, and Bosnia. But the fortress of Nish was successfully taken back by the Ottomans, yet unsuccessful campaigns in the Vidin and Wallachia, and especially in Bosnia after the defeat of Hildburghasuen by the Governor of Bosnia Hekimoglu Ali Pasha in the Battle of Banja Luka changed the course of the war. Following the siege of Belgrade by Ivaz Pasha, the grand vizier, and a positive consequence of joining of Hekimoglu in the siecle, Austria was ultimately forced to make peace in 1739.
