Reprinted from 1732, Ibrahim Muteferrika Edition. (See Ozege for it's original: 3048.). A very heavy set. Ibrahim Muteferrika printed Katib Celebi's well-known book on geography and cosmography 'Cihannuma' in 1732 by adding a supplement containing new information on astronomy and Ottoman geography and maps, in which he relied mostly on Ebu Bekir b. Behram el-Dimaski's (d. 1691) work on the Cihannuma. The appendix in which Muteferrika explained the 'old' and the 'new' world systems produced by Tycho Brahe, Copernicus and Descartes as well as Galileo's theories of the moving bodies was extracted from Edmond Pourchot's (1651 - 1734) well-known work 'Institutiones philosophicae'. Pourchot himself was a reknowned philosopher and was elected rector of the University of Paris seven times. The text compiled by Muteferrika on the heliocentric system would represent comprehensive Turkish text on this subject for a century. Katip Celebi's book of Cihannuma (Jihannuma. View of the World) is a geographical work that makes the first use, in Turkey, of European atlases and other sources.

Where other studies have emphasized the military prowess of the early Ottoman state and its role as 'the infidel enemy', the book offers an insight into its economic aspirations and eventual integration into the economy of the Mediterranean basin. This is a readable, authoritative and innovative study which illuminates our understanding of an obscure period in early Ottoman history.

Zinkeisen's study is the most comprehensive one on history of the Ottoman Empire with Joseph von Hammer. However, Ottoman - European relations had the precedence in his work unlike Hammer's work. "Johann Wilhelm Zinkeisen ( 12. April 1803 in Altenburg; 5. Januar 1863 in Berlin) war ein deutscher Historiker. Zinkeisen studierte in Jena und Göttingen erst Theologie, dann Geschichte, war kurze Zeit Lehrer im Blochmannschen Institut zu Dresden, wo er auch Vorlesungen über griechische Geschichte hielt, und lebte hierauf bis 1831 in München. Nachdem er in Leipzig habilitiert worden war, ging er im Frühjahr 1833 nach Paris, erhielt von Altenburg aus den Titel Professor und wurde auf Alexander von Humboldts Empfehlung 1840 als Oberredakteur der Preußischen Staatszeitung nach Berlin berufen. Im Jahr 1848 wurde diese Zeitschrift in den Preußischen Staatsanzeiger umgewandelt, den Zinkeisen noch bis 1851 redigierte. Danach lebte er in Berlin als Privatmann und starb am 5. Januar 1863.". "Johann Wilhelm Zinkeisen, född 12 april 1803 i Altenburg, död 5 januari 1863 i Berlin, var en tysk historiker. Zinkeisen blev 1826 filosofie doktor och 1831 docent i historia vid Leipzigs universitet, fick 1832 professors titel och vistades flera år för politiska och historiska studier i Paris.
