Stories from the Hidden Harbor: Shipwrecks of Yenikapi. Edited by Gülbahar Baran Çelik, Zeynep Kiziltan.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English. Color and b/w ills. 219 p. "In 2004, the Istanbul Archaeological Museums started large-scale salvage excavations at Yenikapi within the scope of Marmaray-Metro projects. For the first time in Istanbul's history, archaeological excavations were conducted at one of its Byzantine harbors. When the excavations started, it was not known what this ancient harbor at the mouth of the Lykos (Bayrampasa) River would yield. At first, Ottoman remains were encountered in the excavation area, which covers over 58,000 square meters. Then, one of Constantinople's most important, and the world's best known harbors, the Theodosian Harbor, was reached only 1 meter below sea level. During the ongoing excavations, countless small finds and works of architecture were unearthed. In addition to wood and rope fragments, an unexpected find, a shipwreck, was found in 2005. As the excavation area expanded, a total of 37 ships dating between the 5th and 11th centuries were brought to light. Among the finds are very well preserved small and large merchantmen, as well as galleys from the Middle and Late Byzantine periods, which have been found for the first time. The Yenikapi wrecks constitute the largest collection of shipwrecks ever found together. Another surprise was waiting for the archaeologists 6,3 meters below sea level: Istanbul's oldest settlement. This Neolithic settlement dates back 8000 years and changes the writing of Istanbul's history. The footprints of Istanbulites who lived there thousands of years ago were found a few meters below. As the excavations go on uninterrupted, we have now acquired much new information about the city. This exhibition has been prepared in light of the finds from Yenikapi and their scientific study. It presents a section of the city from its first inhabitants to the present, and allows a multidimensional view of trade, seafaring, shipbuilding technology, and everyday life in Constantinople through four wrecks that were found together with their cargo. A publication by the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, Koç Foundation, Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations and Koç University Press".

Osmanli Bankasi Arsivi ve Tahsin Isbiroglu Koleksiyonundan Osmanli Bankasi banknotlari, 1863-1914.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (33 x 24 cm). In Turkish. Many color ills. of banknotes. 167 p. Ottoman paper moneys form the Collection of Tahsin Isbiroglu and the archive of the Ottoman Bank. Osmanli Bankasi Arsivi ve Tahsin Isbiroglu Koleksiyonundan Osmanli Bankasi banknotlari, 1863-1914. This book attempts to present all the banknotes and instruments of circulation issued by the Imperial Ottoman Bank from 1863 to 1914, within the framework of its privilege. The main reason behind this effort is to complete the patchy, or sometimes altogether missing, information available to this day. Indeed, even though some of the general features and figures of the bank's issue were already known, this information still remained extremely superficial. To give but one concrete example of the limits and superficiality of this knowledge, it should suffice to say that there was no clear information as to the exact dates and numbers of each issue. Figures and dates relating to the withdrawal, cancellation and incineration of these banknotes were even harder to come by. In short, it was clear that the only source likely to bring some clarity to the matter was the bank's own records. The Ottoman Bank historical research project, initiated in 1997 with the collaboration of the Ottoman Bank and the Economic and Social History Foundation of Turkey, made it possible to unearth, one after the other, all the documents relating to the Imperial Ottoman Bank's role as a bank of issue. Today, it is possible to study in great detail every single issue of the bank, to the point of following the fate of an individual banknote from issue to cancellation and to incineration. This book consists, therefore, of a systematic presentation of these sources and of the information that can be derived from them.

GARO KÜRKMAN.
Magic of clay and fire. A history of Kütahya pottery and potters.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (33 x 25 cm). In English. 405 p. Color ills. Some areas of art history have been overlooked in comparison to others, attracted less attention, and for this reason been the subject of less research and evaluation. Such situations are observed in particular where one branch or period of art in a country is so prominent as to overshadow its neighbours and counterparts. These neglected areas often deserve far more interest than circumstances grant them. Moreover, the bright light cast by their more famous cousins makes it harder, or even sometimes impossible, to do them justice and gain a true understanding of their qualities. A striking example of this phenomenon in Ottoman art is Kutahya ceramics, which have remained relatively unnoticed with the spotlight of attention focused on Iznik. When speaking of Ottoman ceramics it is first of all those of Iznik that spring to mind today, and this was no less true in the past. Kutahya pottery, like that of Canakkale, has been left to straggle far behind. Yet even a little examination reveals that although in comparison with these splendid 'court art' of Iznik, the pottery of Kutahya is regarded as provincial in character, and that of Canakkale as 'folk art', both these traditions are marked by lively originality and creativity. This book has been designed to throw new light on one of these overshadowed areas, the richly endowed world of Kutahya ceramics. In a region where pottery has been produced without interruption through the Phrygian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and modern periods, Kutahya's long history of pottery production - its development, materials, workshops and craftsmen - has now been re-examined in new depth. Garo Kurkman has combed museums and archives all over the world, bringing to light a myriad documents and photographs that have never been published before, and his fascinating study based on all this new information takes us on a thrilling journey through the magical world of clay, fire and glaze. Some aspects of art history are inevitably overshadowed, and attracting less attention are inadequately researched and evaluated. This happens particularly when one branch or period of a country's art rises to the fore and casts a dazzling light in which other close and similar forms pale into indignificance. arts which are so outshone do not receive the appreciation they really deserve, the brigjht of their illustrious fellow over shadwowed arts possess unexpected riches, uniqe flavours and unforeseen depths thath await discovery by the alert arthistorian, the sharp eyed collector, and the art lover who enjoys following rarely trodden paths.

With this book the remnants of wall paintings in Ephesos are for the first time studied and presented in detail, claiming a new chronology and dating. Sinan: Architect of Suleyman the Magnificent and the Ottoman golden age. Photographs: Ara Güler.
Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Large 4to. (42 x 32 cm). In English. 143 p. Color photos. Sinan was the greatest architect of the Ottoman Golden Age of the sixteenth century - when the Ottoman Empire reached its zenith of power and magnificence. At the same time as Michelangelo was working on St. Peter's, Sinan completed the greatest of Turkish mosques, the Suleymaniye and the Selimiye. His style marks the apogee of Turkish art. The son of Christians, Sinan was drafted as a boy into the Imperial Corps of Janissaries, and took part in many of te Ottoman campaigns in Eastern Europe during the 1520s and 1530s. Beginning as a military engineer and designer of fortifications, he was appointed Chief Imperial Architect in 1538. Under Suleyman the magnificent and his successor Selim II, Sinan designed hundreds of buildings: mosques, palaces, tombs, mausolea, hospitals, schools, caravanserai, bridges, aqueducts and baths. As he himself said, 'with time each edifice became - with the help of Allah and thanks to the generosity and benevolence of the State - the very image of the world in the lands ruled by the Ottoman dynasty.' In his greatest works, he adapted Byzantine and Islamic styles to produce something quite new: a centralized organization of absolute space unhindered by pillars or columns and covered by a soaring dome. An architect of genius in a dynamic new empire expanding into both Asia and Europe, he was a true man of the Renaissance. Opulent colour illustrations - may photographed especially for this publication - pay tribute to the extraordinary space and light of Sinan's buildings. Texts by the most important specialists in this field complement the handsome visual material and offer new interpretations of Sinan's art. The result is a magnificent testament to the achievement of one man, who stamped his imprint on an entire culture.

31 Mart Vakasi.
Very Good English Paperback. Pbo. Foolscap 8vo. (17 x 11 cm). In Turkish. 38, [2] p. A study on 31 Mart Incident in the Ottoman Empire, 1909. The 31 March Incident (Turkish: 31 Mart Vakasi or 31 Mart Olayi) was a 1909 rebellion of reactionaries in Istanbul against the restoration of the constitutional system that had taken place in 1908. It took place on 13 April 1909 (31 March on the Rumi calendar in use at the time in Turkey for official timekeeping). The countercoup had attempted to put an end to the nascent Second Constitutional Era in the Ottoman Empire and to the newly established influence of the Committee of Union and Progress, in order to re-affirm the position of the Sultan Abdul Hamid II as absolute monarch. The incident was a milestone in the Turkish military's encroaching on the political sphere.

PONTUS HELLSTRÖM.
Labraunda. A guide to the Karian Sanctuary of Zeus Labraundos.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 163 p. Color ills. Labraunda is an ancient site in south-western Turkey, excavated by Swedish archaeologists. This solitary place was a pilgrim sanctuary and the sacred center for the ancient Karians; a paved road for sacred processions led there from Milas. The shrine at Labraunda was the most important one in this part of Karia. This guide to the Swedish excavations contains both a description of the buildings that were erected in honour of the god Zeus Labraundos and an account of how the site was rediscovered in the 19th century. Labraunda is worth a visit not only because of the well-preserved remains of the unique banqueting hall Andron A and the other ruins, but also for the beautiful location and the splendid panorama view it offers. It is also unusual to find an ancient sanctuary, which, after its heyday, remained almost unchanged. It is therefore still possible to imagine what the sanctuary looked like in the 4th century BC, at the time when Karia was ruled by Maussollos and Idrieus.

ARA GÜLER.
Call of Aphrodisias.
Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Folio. (43 x 31 cm). In English. 212 p. Color photos. The ancient city of Aphrodisias, which was the most renowned centre of sculpture for 600 years, had fallen into oblivion until being rediscovered and brought to public attention through photographs taken by the esteemed photographer Ara Guler. This event is without doubt foremost among Guler's countless contributions to awareness of Turkey throughout the world. In 1958 Ara Güler travelled to the town of Karacasu in Aydin province to photograph the Kemer Dam, and stumbled across Aphrodisias by accident after losing his way on the return journey from the dam. Photographs that he took during that first and several subsequent visits to Aphrodisias were published in many Turkish and foreign newspapers, periodicals and books, but until now have never been gathered together in a single publication. Call of Aphrodisias presents a large selection of these photographs. In publishing this collection of Ara Guler's photographs we wish to honour the memory of Prof. Kenan T. Erim, who from 1961 until his death in 1990 devoted himself to Aphrodisias to such a degree that his name came to be identified with the city; and Sevgi Gonul, who initiated the founding of the Geyre Foundation in 1987, but whose unexpected death in 2003 prevented her seeing the Sebasteion Sevgi Gonul Hall, one of the concrete results of her work on behalf of this spectacular ancient city.
