Hippodrom / At meydani. A stage for Istanbul's history.= Hippodrom / Atmeydani. Istanbul'un tarih sahnesi. [Exhibition catalogue]. 2 volumes set. Translators: Cem Akas, Jonathan Bardill, Kemal Atakay.
New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 25 cm). In total as set: 716 p., 1 folding plt. Very heavy volumes. B/w and color ills. In Turkish and English. The exhibition "Hippodrome/ Atmeydani: A Stage for Istanbul's History" takes the visitor on a tour of one of the major architectural achievements of Byzantine Constantinople. Images from the fifteenth and early sixteenth century show the structure of the Hippodrome to have been fairly well preserved at the time of the Ottoman conquest. The construction of Ottoman palaces and the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, however, played a major role in the dismantling of the remains of the Hippodrome. Nevertheless, this large open space's association with horses was preserved. It became known as Atmeydani (Horse Square) during the Ottoman era and was used for playing the equestrian game cirit. The Ottomans and the sultans also continued to hold celebrations and public spectacles in the area. Visitors to the Hippodrome today can view its three surviving monuments-the masonry obelisk, the Serpent Column, and the Egyptian obelisk-but few can easily imagine the splendor and size of the original Hippodrome that stood for more than eleven centuries."The Hippodrome/ Atmeydani: Istanbul's Stage of History" exhibition almost rebuilds the magnificent Hippodrome decorated with exceptionally beautiful monuments and the Atmeydani of the Ottoman period, and examines the life surrounding them.

Ottoman architecture in Albania, 1385-1912.
New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. [ii], [2], 342 p., 56 numerous color and b/w plts. Ottoman architecture in Albania, 1385-1912. An extensive study of the numerous Islamic monuments in Albania. The author examined the historical context in which they were built, their architectural characteristics and present state. The analysis is placed in the context of state administration, cultural and social life, and institutional system during the period of Ottoman rule. As such, the book is much more than an architectural study; it also reflects the Ottoman administrative system applied in the provinces, the social functions of the state, and the institutional structure of society. "Architectural historians will appreciate the book most, but students of the Ottoman Caliphate and European art history will also benefit from this sound study." Chefredakteur und Herausgeber: Ayas Ishaki. Ishaki was a leading figure of the Tatar national movement, author, journalist, publisher and politician. Gayaz Ishaki was born in 1878 in the village of Yaushirma near Kazan to a Mishar Tatar family. He was home-schooled by his father at an early age and was sent to study in a madrasah (religious school). He continued his education in the Russian-Tatar teachers' school (1898-1902). Gayaz Ishaki moved to Kazan in 1904, where he became acquainted to socialists and adopted some of their views. He became involved in revolutionary activities and subsequently was arrested and sent to a prison near the city of Arkhangelsk in northern Russia in 1907. After the February revolution of 1917 he was involved in activities aimed at achieving cultural autonomy for the Volga Tatars and other Turkic peoples of Russia. As a result of his activities, the Soviet authorities started a campaign of harassment and persecution against him and his associates. He was forced to emigrate in 1920. After settling in Germany, Gayaz Iskhaki started publishing a Tatar-language magazine "Milli Yul" ("the Way of the nation") in 1928. In 1939 the magazine was closed and Iskhaki decided to immigrate to Turkey. After World War II he became involved in political activities. At this stage his main goal was the restoration of the Tatar nationhood lost in 1552 when the Kazan Khanate was defeated and occupied by the Moscow Principality. Throughout his life Gayaz Iskhaki traveled to Poland, Germany, Japan, China and Turkey where he tried to establish Tatar-language press and unite disparate Tatar emigree communities. Gayaz Iskhaki died in 1954 and was buried in Edirnekapi graveyard of Istanbul.

Marz 1934. No: 3 (74). Chefredakteur und Herausgeber: Ayas Ishaki. New New Persian Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Persian and a little abstract in English. 378, [5] p. Târikh-e ravâbet-e Iran va Osmâni dar asr-e Safavi. [= The history of Ottoman-Iranian relations in the Safavid era], 907-1135 / 1501-1722 (Iran & Ottoman History Series: 4). "Throughout the history of the Ottoman Empire its relations with Iran were contentious. This is especially true for the Safavid period. A clear indication of the nature of this contention is the repetitive wars and treatise between the parties. Inevitably, on both sides of the divide there has been considerable research on this period and issues involved. However, no matter how valuable these works are, they are not involved in a dialogue and research has mostly been one sided, with the scholars of the other side. A meaningful dialogue on the other hand, requires that the scholars, of both sides, consult the works of each other and pay attention to the views of their counterparts. This, inevitably requires translation of the works of differing parties. Such works would promote mutual understanding and the discovery of the realities that should supplant partisan discourse. It is well known that without critical examination of the historical facts we would end up with stories that might sound good to one side of the divide but add little to historiography. Obviously there is a need for such historical works. Composed to fifteen research papers by different Turkish scholars, the present volume hopes to fill such a vacuum; introduce the works of Turkish scholars to the Iranian public and academia, and shed new light on Ottoman-Safavid relations.".
