"Kagithane (Turkish pronunciation: [ka??t'ha?ne]) is a working class district of the city of Istanbul, Turkey, in a valley inland from the upmarket Etiler. Built along a stream that runs into the Golden Horn. In the time of Suleiman the Magnificent the valley was known as 'Sadabad' and used by the Ottoman court for hunting, riding and equestrian sports. The valley was full of wonderful tulip fields and in spring people would come along the stream for picnics and days out of the city. There are records of gatherings such as wedding parties being held here. By the late Ottoman period the valley floor had been drained, weekend homes had been built in the valley with lovely gardens, and the area led into the richly forested parks of Kagithane and Alibeyköy ideal for parties and picnics. The Ottoman gunpowder factory was the first industrial activity in the valley and dated back to the early Ottoman sultan Bayezid II. Kagithane then became home to numerous factories including flour mills and the paper factories that give the area its name. The area was still far from the city and not heavily populated until the late 20th century. Until then there were gypsy camps in the valley (and there is still a large gypsy community in Gültepe today). Real growth came to Kagithane from the 1950s onwards, as the area was settled by migrants from Anatolia, who came to work in the factories, workshops or building sites. They built small cottages on the valley sides, then brought family, friends and neighbours from the village to live in one of the rooms while they built their own cottages nearby. As many Turkish rural areas have been impoverished for decades there has been no shortage of people prepared to opt for this lifestyle in Istanbul. None of this building was regulated or controlled in any meaningful way and whenever there is a big rain people in Kagithane are flooded out of their homes. And the houses were scattered all over the sides of the valley with no thought for where they could put roads, drains or any other infrastructure. And Istanbul is vulnerable to earthquakes. This working class district was a centre of left-wing support during the years of political violence in the 1970s. From the 1970s onwards as the second generation grew up the cottages have been pulled down and replaced with grubby, bare-walled six-storey apartment buildings to house the offspring of these families. Registers and memoirs of Keppe, Karen, (1876-1935) was a Danish missionary and social worker, known for her work aid worker with Ottoman Armenian refugees and survivals of the Armenian Genocide, mainly widows and orphans, from 1903 until her death in Syria in 1935 (Near East Relief). She was a member of Johannes Lepsius's Deutsch Orient-Mission (German Orient Mission) and assumed responsibility (in 1903) for the Armenian children in the Millet Khan German Refugee Orphanage after the 1895 Urfa massacres. In Aleppo, today in the Syrian territory, various relief organizations such as orphanages, hospitals, vocational schools were established for the Armenians coming into the region due to tehcir. The social and economic welfare activities undertaken by the Ottoman administrators in the region were launched and conducted as of the very first days of the World War I. After the war various relief organizations engaged in certain activities in the region as well. One such an organization was the Near East Relief Foundation. The activities launched by the foundation were led by Karen JEPPE, a Danish philanthropist and a Commissioner at the League of Nations. Our study embodies the narratives of 1184 people whom the Near East Relief Foundation helped in the period given. (Although Karen Jeppe claims to have had rescued 1700 people, some of the records are not found in the League of Nations Archives in Geneva). The information taking place in the records found at the League of Nations Archives not only contains the names of the people, their parents' names, hometowns, ages, and their acceptance to the relief foundation, but the stories they lived throughout the period after the relocations.

This study has been prepared after researches lasted several years in archives and libraries of the Russian Federation. The documentary aspect of this long-lasting study is especially based on the documents found in the Archive of the Russian Empire Foreign Policy, the Russian State Military History Archive, the Russian Federation State Archive in Moscow, and the Russian State History Archive in Saint Petersburg. Library research within the scope of the study was carried out in the Russian National Library, Library of the Academy of Sciences, Library of the Institute of the Oriental Studies in Saint Petersburg, and in the Russian State Library (previously Lenin Library) in Moscow. Besides Russian sources, the studies of Armenian historians and authors written in the Russian language during the Tsarist and Soviet eras have also been thoroughly examined in our research. This is the first extensive study carried out in eight different Russian archives on the process of the emergence of the Armenian Question.

The Turkish House is both a picturesque image and a historical fact. Since the sixteenth century, descriptions of travelers and the engravings and paintings of western artists depicting Ottoman lands introduced to the world images of a different urban tradition and the existence of a different dwelling concept. Europeans regarded the physiognomy of the Ottoman capital, Istanbul, and other great cities of the Empire such as Edirne, Bursa, Izmir, Konya, Amasya and lesser towns from the Balkans to Iran and Mesopotamia with a mixed feeling of wonder and disdain. The Turkish urbanscape - the khans and caravansaries, covered bazaars, Turkish baths, the wooden houses with their lattice-screenned windows and bold overhaning projections aligned along the narrow and tortuous streets, well-lit and lavishly-decorated rooms in which dignified men in magnificent robes sat in characteristic postures on low divans, women of the harem looking over the streets from behind wooden screens - all these idiosyncratic images of a preindustrial society, idealized, romanticized and distorted by narrators and artists, excited the imagination of the western public about the nonchalant life of the Turks and the so-called Orient.
