‎The Greek War of Independence 1821-1833.‎

‎"For the Greeks, the fight for independence from the Ottoman Empire was a cruel business, and its consequences far-reaching. Today's Greece is much more the child of that struggle than it is of the Classical period we know so much better. Because of Ottoman oppression and its brutal end, hostility to Turkey still smoulders, as does suspicion that foreign powers manipulate Greece for their own ends. For much of the war the Greek cause looked hopeless. The rebels could call only on lightly armed merchant ships and a long tradition of brigandage, which seemed no match for a formidable empire. Foreign philhellenes joined the Greek cause but foreign governments cared less for the Greeks than for the stability of Europe, hard-won by Napoleon's defeat. Nevertheless the Greeks won victories at sea, largely due to their use of terrifying fireships, and on land under the leadership of the charismatic Kolokotroms. Civil war then broke out among the Greeks, and for a time Kolokotroms swapped his tent for a prison cell. But support for Greece was growing, as all Europe was moved by Turkish massacres, by the death of Byron, most famous philhellene of all, and by the bloody invasion of the Peloponnese by Ottoman troops brought in by sea from Egypt. The governments of Europe now demanded an end to the fighting, and an allied fleet under Admiral Codrington sailed to meet the Ottoman navy at Navarino Bay. Nervous fingers fired inevitable shots, sixty Turkish ships were sent to the sea bed, and Greek freedom was finally assured. This is a powerful, fearsome and inspiring story, and David Brewer's book covers it fully for the first time in over a century, dealing evenhandedly with the courage, cunning and barbarism of Greeks and Turks alike." 393p. illus maps.bibliography.index (name on ffep, else fine ) Book‎

‎Jewish Life in Twenty-First-Century Turkey: The Other Side of Tolerance (New Anthropologies of Europe)‎

‎8vo, Turkey is famed for a history of tolerance toward minorities, and thereis a growing nostalgia for the 'Ottoman mosaic.' In this richly detailedstudy, Marcy Brink-Danan examines what it means for Jews to live as a toleratedminority in contemporary Istanbul. Often portrayed as the 'good minority,'Jews in Turkey celebrate their long history in the region, yet they are subject todiscrimination and their institutions are regularly threatened and periodicallyattacked. Brink-Danan explores the contradictions and gaps in the popular ideologyof Turkey as a land of tolerance, describing how Turkish Jews manage the tensionsbetween cosmopolitanism and patriotism, difference as Jews and sameness as Turkishcitizens, tolerance and violence. 242 pp‎

‎The people & places of Constantinople. Watercolours by Amadeo Count Preziosi, 1816-1882.‎

‎Fine English Paperback. Small 4to. (27 x 20 cm). In English. 54, [2] p., 53 numerous b/w plts., 46 numerous color plates. The people & places of Constantinople. Watercolours by Amadeo Count Preziosi, (1816-1882). It's prepared for the first exhibition on Count Amadeo Preziosi, (1816-1882) in Great Britain. "This is the first exhibition of the work of Amadeo Preziosi to be held in this ccountry. It does not cclaim to be definitive, but it centered on the Museum's substantial holdings and augmented by loans from collections in Great Britain. Preziosi's name is now little known except to specialists, but in the period 1840-70 he was by far the most reknowned artist in Constantinople. He was only retrieved from the critical neglect into which he had fallen in the 20th century by Rodney Searight who began to appreciate his importance while building up his unsurpassed collection of views of the Near and Middle East. Indeed, it is fitting that the exhibition honours not only Preziosi himself but also Rodney Searight, pioneer of the study of this field, whose collection the Museum is raising funds to acquire. It is hoped that the enthusiasm Preziosi's contemporaries felt foe his lively and colourful studies of a now vanished way of life will be appreciated by visitors to the exhibition". It was a time when East and West encountered each other as cultural and political equals. In this wide-ranging exploration, Jerry Brotton argues that between 1400 and 1600 Europe defined itself by trading and competing with its Islamic, African, and Asian neighbours. 'The Renaissance Bazaar' tells the story of this intense exchange of ideas, objects, and skills that shaped the European Renaissance. It also shows how technological and commercial developments such as printing, banking, and mapmaking were inextricably connected‎

‎Osmanli Imparatorlugu'nun Araplari, (1516-1918). Sosyal ve kültürel bir tarih. [= The Arabs of the Ottoman Empire, 1516-1918: A social and cultural history]. Translated by Feray Coskun.‎

‎New Turkish Paperback. Large demy 8vo. (23 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 272 p. Osmanli Imparatorlugu'nun Araplari, (1516-1918). Sosyal ve kültürel bir tarih. Turkish Edition of Masters' 'The Arabs of the Ottoman Empire, 1516-1918: A social and cultural history'. The Ottomans ruled much of the Arab World for four centuries. Bruce Masters's work surveys this period, emphasizing the cultural and social changes that occurred against the backdrop of the political realities that Arabs experienced as subjects of the Ottoman sultans. The persistence of Ottoman rule over a vast area for several centuries required that some Arabs collaborate in the imperial enterprise. Masters highlights the role of two social classes that made the empire successful: the Sunni Muslim religious scholars, the ulama, and the urban notables, the acyan. Both groups identified with the Ottoman sultanate and were its firmest backers, although for different reasons. The ulama legitimated the Ottoman state as a righteous Muslim sultanate, while the acyan emerged as the dominant political and economic class in most Arab cities due to their connections to the regime. Together, the two helped to maintain the empire.‎

‎Economic life in Ottoman Europe: Taxation, trade and the struggle for land, 1600-1800.‎

‎Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In English. [xii], 226 p. Studies in modern capitalism = Etudes sur le capitalisme moderne. Of the various monopolies exercised by the Ottoman ruling stratum in their long domination over South-eastern Europe, the most lasting in its effects was their monopoly over information. The scanty knowledge that outsiders had of this area improved only in the nineteenth century as, one after another, the Balkan nations regained independence and, with it, their identities. Well into the twentieth century, historians made do with very incomplete information about the period prior to the national revivals of the last century. The result was a tendency to offer disturbingly impoverished and flattened views of provincial life under Ottoman rule, inviting doctrinaire distortions of these eclipsed centuries. In this book, originally published in 1982, Bruce McGowan presents material concerning this neglected area. His painstaking study of Ottoman records provides convincing analyses of economic, fiscal and demographic questions fundamental to our understanding of the region.‎

‎BUGRA POYRAZ.‎

‎The history of the church diplomacy in Turkey.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 152 p. The history of the church diplomacy in Turkey. As a result of the hostility of the Third French Republic which endured from 1870 to 1940, many religious orders were disbanded in France and few orders could survive because of the governmental pressure. A diplomatic crisis broke out between the Holy See and France. The French ambassador to Rome was recalled and the Papal Nuncio to France was expelled. This crisis affected also the strength of France in Orient, who was the Protector of the Latin Catholics and in a wide coverage, all the Catholic subjects. During the sultanate of Abdülhamid II, the role of the Apostolic Delegate (representative of the Pope before the diplomatic relations started) was enhanced in front of the Sublime Porte. Because of this diplomatic crisis between the Holy See and France, there have been serious diplomatic conflicts between the Apostolic Delegate in Istanbul and French ambassadors. It is possible to read these conflicts through the diplomatic archives and correspondences, especially through the recently published documents, which are part of the Vatican Secret Archives. During the pontificate of Pope John XXIII in 1960, the diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Turkey started by the appointment of a Turkish Ambassador to the Holy See and an Apostolic Nuncio to Ankara. This project is aiming to focus on the challenge of power between France and the Holy See in front of the Sublime Porte for keeping the right of representing and protecting the Catholic Subjects in the 19th and 20th centuries, including the establishment and development of the French Protectorate in the Ottoman lands, its abolishment and the diplomatic attempts of Apostolic Delegates for being recognized by the Turkish authorities as the representative of the Pope for Catholic subjects, until the reciprocal appointment of ambassadors in 1960.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 129 p. Insanity in the reign of Abdülhamid II, (1876-1909). Insanity has always been a popular topic. This study has tried to identify the status of insane in the mind of the state during the Abdülhamid II¿s reign (1876-1909). The main issue of this study is the contradiction between the position of the insane and insanity in the Abdülhamid¿s era and his charitable and protector Sultan image. In this regard, the Ottoman asylums, the practices in these asylums, daily life of insanes in the Ottoman society, the status of criminal insanes and their sensations, the Ottoman psychiatrists and their studies have been analyzed.‎

‎Political representation of minorities in Greece and Turkey: Nationalism, reciprocity and Europeanization.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 512 p. Political representation of minorities in Greece and Turkey: Nationalism, reciprocity and Europeanization. What influences the political representation of minorities? Does a non-core group pursue a certain pattern of collective political behavior, or does it have the ability to alter it through struggle with other groups by calculating the existing opportunities and restrictions? This book addresses these important questions by focusing on the history of political representation of the Muslim-Turkish minority in Greece and the Greek-Orthodox minority in Turkey, two communities whose rights are linked to each other via the "reciprocity principle" written in the Lausanne Treaty, signed by two countries that have long-lasting conflicts. Drawing on presentation of related political history, systematic coding of parliamentary debates and works, minority and mainstream newspapers, and elite interviews, the author analyzes and explains ignored linkages between institutions, bilateral relations between Greece and Turkey, and the role of external factors that enable or constrain minority communities access to political life. This study which adopts a historical institutionalism approach and, by integrating theory of both comparative politics and international relations, shows how the minority groups political participation and the effectiveness of their representation has been determined by the triangle of the two states choice of nationalism, reciprocity and Europeanization policies, mainly argues that internal factors such as groups capability for competition and institutional features of the political system in the host-state mostly override states bilateral relations with the kin-state and international factors. As a result, for the Greek and Turkish case, the host-states generally pursue the policy of state-controlled involvement of their minorities in the political life, where the existence of the threatening kin-state and minority groups strong demographic features lead to avoidance of full assimilation and exclusion from political representation.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript paper. Double elephant folio. (79 x 58 cm). In Ottoman script. Hegira: [1]233-[1]234 = Gregorian: 1818. Burdurlu Dervish Mehmed Pasha, who was grand vizier held office under Mahmud II between the years of 1818-1820. Dervis Mehmed Pasa had gained a reputation among the 'vüzerâ' (Grand-viziers) would be the grand vizier as previously planned by Sultan Mahmud II according the 19th-century historian of Sânîzâde. He dealt with like cases the Aleppo revolution, confusions in Diyarbekir and Çildir, conquest of the Castle of Dir'iye, the center of the Wahhabis by Ibrahim Pasha, the son of Kavalali Mehmed Ali Pasha, the governor of Egypt and confusions in Sivas city. (Türkiye Diyanet Vakfi Islâm Ansiklopedisi). Buyuruldu (or Buyrultu, Buyurildi, Buyurdu etc.) is the order of an Ottoman grand vizier, vizier, beglerbegi , defterdâr , or other high official to a subordinate. The term is derived from the word 'buyuruldi', it has been ordered, in which the order usually ends and which gradually developed into a conventional sign. Buyuruldus are of two main types: a) decisions written in the margin (der kenâr) of an incoming petition or report, often ordering that a fermân (firman) (or berât , etc.) be issued to a certain effect... (Brill, Encyclopedia of Islam). "Menzils" were early post organization in the Ottoman Empire before Reform period. In the Ottoman Empire, every 35 kilometers - the distance one could travel in a day - on the main roads, there were buildings called "menzil" or "menzilhane" (destination, post station). Surrounded by walls, these yards had a hostelry, barn, market, bath and restaurant. Hosted at the complex for free, travelers shopped, took baths and fed their animals and continued their journeys the following day. At the complex, officials - registered and paid by the state - served the guests. Within time, menzils turned into bazaars where locals sold their products. Then, villages and towns started pop up around them. Commodities needed by the army for expeditions were preserved at menzils and soldiers were accommodated at these facilities if needed during expeditions. Mailmen operating between two faraway destinations changed their horses with those waiting at menzils and went on their route without losing time. (Source: Ekrem Bugra Ekinci). This huge sized budget paper (defter) written on paper with 'ahar'. Used black and red inks. It's written from Harmancik qaza (district) in Bursa vilayet (city) and sent to court of Istanbul for grand vizier confirmation. It's a budget defter of Harmancik 'menzil'. Apprx. 250-300 articles (registers) in notes as expenses like Tatar postmans, horses, Kütahya beglerbegi (beylerbeyi), qadis (judges) and other ones. ‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original b/w map. 70x57 cm. In Ottoman script. Folded. No scale info. A huge plan showing The Second Battle of Çatalca fought between 03 February 1913 and 03 April 1913 was a major "continuous skirmish" of the First Balkan War. The battle consisted of a series of thrusts and counter-thrusts by both the Ottomans and the Bulgarians. On 20 February the Ottomans, in coordination with a separate attack from Gallipoli, charged the Bulgarian positions. Although the Bulgarians repulsed the initial attack, they were weakened enough that they withdrew over fifteen kilometers to the south and twenty kilometers to the west to secondary defensive positions; but eventually the lines returned to essentially the originals. The separate siege of Edirne resulted in its loss to the Bulgarians on 26 March, sapping Ottoman morale; and with heavy Bulgarian losses to both fighting and cholera, the battle dwindled down and ceased by 3 April 1913. On 16 April a second ceasefire (armistice) was agreed to, ending the last fighting in the war. In the Ottoman Empire, the word "esnaf" (craftsman, tradesman) covered a wide category of people, referring to artists as well as artisans. In fact, anyone who produced or sold something, or provided a service, in short anyone who worked for a living, was included in the category. The master artisans who produced prayer beads were considered as esnaf, as were the watermen who roamed the streets bare-foot crying "abates love's fire" as they freely distributed curative water. Members of the old fire squads entered the esnaf category as did porters. Peddlers formed another part of the esnaf mosaic. These poor people who carried their heavy load, walking the streets of istanbul often bare foot and dressed in rags, originated from the provinces. This book is not a historical research on the esnaf. It is a series of portraits gathered from the cinders of Ottoman social history‎
