Continuity and change: New approaches to legacy data in archaeology.= Süreklilik ve degisim: Miras veriye yeni yaklasimlar. Sempozyum bildirileri: Ankara, 29 Nisan 2016. Research on regional studies in archaeology has accelerated in the past 20 years and changed the archaeological discourse in a fundamental way. This recent perspective influenced the archaeological perception favorably in terms of evaluating the settlements with a holistic view, assessment of central places with their rural territories that cannot be separated from each other. The idea of organizing a symposium on this subject comes from our belief in the importance of removing ourselves of the understanding resulting from handling the settlement in Anatolian archeology for a long period of time, stripped from its dynamics and our belief in the importance of presenting new researches. Our department, Settlement Archaeology Program in METU was founded in 2000 mainly for filling the gap in Anatolian archaeology with the viewpoint of interdisciplinary studies and regional studies in archaeology. Studies at regional scale are recently integrated to archaeological projects in our country, yet produced important results. The main goal of this symposium is to provide a discussion ground for young scholars who carry out archaeological studies at regional scale and share various perspectives and results yielded by regional studies in Anatolia. ‎New New Persian Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Persian and a little abstract in English. 378, [5] p. Târikh-e ravâbet-e Iran va Osmâni dar asr-e Safavi. [= The history of Ottoman-Iranian relations in the Safavid era], 907-1135 / 1501-1722 (Iran & Ottoman History Series: 4). "Throughout the history of the Ottoman Empire its relations with Iran were contentious. This is especially true for the Safavid period. A clear indication of the nature of this contention is the repetitive wars and treatise between the parties. Inevitably, on both sides of the divide there has been considerable research on this period and issues involved. However, no matter how valuable these works are, they are not involved in a dialogue and research has mostly been one sided, with the scholars of the other side. A meaningful dialogue on the other hand, requires that the scholars, of both sides, consult the works of each other and pay attention to the views of their counterparts. This, inevitably requires translation of the works of differing parties. Such works would promote mutual understanding and the discovery of the realities that should supplant partisan discourse. It is well known that without critical examination of the historical facts we would end up with stories that might sound good to one side of the divide but add little to historiography. Obviously there is a need for such historical works. Composed to fifteen research papers by different Turkish scholars, the present volume hopes to fill such a vacuum; introduce the works of Turkish scholars to the Iranian public and academia, and shed new light on Ottoman-Safavid relations.".‎

The present work reviews the process extensively. It is comprised of three books laid out in two volumes. The first book examines the emergence of the idea of the modern university beginning from the period of the Tanzimat and its establishment after three attempts, and analyses its evolution in stages, until the 1933 university reform. the second book looks into the development of the Darülfünun in the light of evolving concepts and trends in cultural, social and scholarly life. [Exhibition cataalogue]. [With a CD]. On the 86th anniversary of the Republic: Ankara: City of the Black Calpac, 1923-1938 was unveiled. The exhibition told the story of Ankara, the capital that became the image of the Republic with the "Parliament" at its center and the exemplary lifeworld of the national idea; in doing so, it focused on Ankara's architecture, its social life and its modernized look that were shaped by and around Atatürk. Through photographs, documents and objects, the exhibition showcased Ankara, a city founded on the clashing symbols of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic, and its architectural elements ranging from the Ottoman residential fabric to the modern urban sprawl of the Early Republic; it recreated the exhilaration that accompanied the founding of the Republic and the daily life that was shaped around Atatürk himself. Ankara: the City of the Black Calpac, 1923-1938 narrated the story of the founding days of the Republic and the construction of Ankara, the new capital, as an exemplary city.‎

The dervishes of sovereignty, the sovereignty of dervishes: The Mevlevi Order in Istanbul.= Saltanatin dervisleri, dervislerin saltanati: Istanbul'da Mevlevilik. Due to Unesco's designation of 2007 as the 800th anniversary of Mevlânâ Celâleddîn-i Rûmî's (1207-1273) birth, Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Istanbul Research Institute prepared the exhibition The Dervishes of Sovereignty, The Sovereignty of Dervishes: The Mevlevî Order in Istanbul, in order to shed light upon the Sufi history of Istanbul and to commemorate once again the life of Rumi. A mystical institution of medieval Islam at the end of 13th century with respect to its social and cultural roots, the Mevlevî Order assumes its unique place in the world due to Istanbul's close interaction with the Renaissance in Europe and embarks upon a journey that leads from Konya to Istanbul, upon Sultan Mehmed II's conquest of the latter. As part of the historical continuum that lasts for centuries, the Mevlevî Order is transformed from an Eastern mentality to becoming the epitome of an intellectual and spiritual bridge between the East and the West. Following the inauguration of the Galata Mevlevî Lodge in 1491, although the Order finds the opportunity to expand into the Balkan and Mediterranean geography, the Mevlevî sheikh families of Istanbul lay the foundations of the Istanbul Mevlevî Order as of the mid-17th century. Representing the chivalry of word, the universality of heart, and the sanctity of spirit, the Mevlevîs of Istanbul weave the Mevlevî symbolism, which has been shaped in the medieval mystical culture of Islam, into the texture of daily life. In an effort to give spirit to matter, these unique men are the architects of a vast cultural spectrum that ranges from clothing to ordinary objects and from works of art to colloquial language. Brought to life through the collaborative efforts of exhibition curator Ekrem Isin and exhibition consultant Prof. M. Baha Tanman and comprised of levhas (panels), engravings, photographs, and daily objects, which constitute an important part of the visual archives of the Ottoman Empire, The Dervishes of Sovereignty, The Sovereignty of Dervishes: The Mevlevî Order in Istanbul exhibition and catalogue is a mystical journey into the ney-playing, whirling dervishes.‎

‎The logbook of the Ottoman navy: Ships, legends, sailors.= Osmanli donanmasinin seyir defteri: Gemiler, efsaneler, denizciler.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 229 p., color and b/w ills. The logbook of the Ottoman navy: Ships, legends, sailors.= Osmanli donanmasinin seyir defteri: Gemiler, efsaneler, denizciler. Ottoman Principality was introduced to the dark sea of the Middle Ages early in the 14 th century. The battles with the Venetians and the Genoese, conquests in Rumelia, and the establishment of the first shipyards all occurred during this period. As the conquest of Istanbul marked the end of the period of transition from Principality to Empire, the foundations of a strong navy that would unite the Mediterranean and the Black Sea over a political geography were laid. The power of the corsairs diminished by the end of the Renaissance; Barbaros Hayreddîn Pasha personified the golden age of Ottoman sea power. The discovery of the New World had instigated a revolution in the maritime world. Traditional Venetian galleys gave way to Spanish galleons and manpower was replaced by wind power. The Ottoman navy assumed a pioneering role in the process of modernization that extended from the 18 th to the 20 th century. Naval education in the Western sense, the implementation of new technologies and the organization of a modern fleet were all consequences of this period. Advancing from the galley to the battlecruiser, Ottoman sea power had the final say in the affairs of the Empire. "The Logbook of the Ottoman Navy: Ships, Legends, Sailors" exhibition intertwines three distinct, yet integrated mythologies of the sea. The imprint of the ships in Ottoman seafaring history, the battles they were engaged in and the heroes who became legendary in these battles assume their places on the stage of civilization in all their historic magnitude. At the center of the construct lies the extraordinary adventure of the transition from traditional to modern seafaring methods. The quest for power, the demolished thrones and man's identification of his fate with the sea is perhaps the oldest story behind this adventure. The cornerstones of a long history that extends from the legacy of a 16 th century Ottoman galley to the battlecruiser, Yavuz, is brought to light through the memories of seamen.‎

‎Turkish - Balkans relations: The future prospects of cultural, political and economic transformations and relations.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 358 p. Turkish - Balkans Relations: The Future Prospects of Cultural, Political and Economic Transformations and Relations is a significant interdisciplinary publication, which provides first-hand discourse about Turkish-Balkans relations. The title of the book greatly reflects the diversity of its authors and contributors whose academic and scholarly expertise include history, architecture, literature, media and film, sociology, education, international relations, diplomacy and economics. The added value of this book is also expressed in that the origin of contributors come from different countries such as Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Australia, the USA, Macedonia, Serbia, Kosovo and Greece. Therefore, in contrast to other publications on Turkish-Balkans relations, which were written by authors who do not come from the Balkans, this book is a real insider's perspective because most of authors live and work in the Balkans.‎

‎Alakent Church: A Byzantine monument at Myra 12th-13th centuries.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). Edition in English. 269 p., ills. Alakent church: A Byzantine monument at Myra 12th-13th centuries. The presence of this small Byzantine church in the Alakent neighborhood of Demre has been known to archaeologists and art historians for quite some time. Revealing the structure from under the five meter deep alluvial fill in which it was buried was only possible as a result of the excavation work carried out in 2010 as part of the Myra-Andriake Excavations. The alluvial fill kept most of the aspects of the building such as mural paintings, roof tiles, facade decorations and spolia intact. The book was edited by the GABAM's director and member of Koç University Archaeology and Art History Department, Engin Akyürek. "The chapters of book are 'The Story of the Excavation' by Nevzat Çevik, the director of the Myra-Andriake Excavations, 'Myra: The Metropolis of Lycia', 'Alakent Church: Location And Architecture' and 'Conclusion' by Engin Akyürek, 'Architectural Sculpture' by Ayça Tiryaki, 'Wall Paintings' by Nilay Çoragan, 'Ceramic Finds' and 'Burials' by Özgü Çömezoglu Uzbek, 'Inscriptions' by Hüseyin Sami Öztürk and Christof Schuler, 'Conservation Treatments' by Sebahattin Küçük.".‎
