The city has played an important role in world and Turkish culture, being best known for the two Ecumenical Councils held here in early Christian era, and for the Iznik ware tiles and ceramics produced during the Ottoman period. Abdülhamid dönemi fotograflariyla Bursa.= Madinah al-Burusa fi 'ahd al-Sultan Abd al-Hamid al-Thani min khilal al-suwar al-tarikhiyah. Text by Mustafa Armagan. The city of Bursa, situated in the north-west of Turkey, has been for millennia a settlement area at the intersection of travel and trade routes. From 1335 to 1363 it was the capital of the Ottoman State. IRCICA has published a deluxe album of photographs of Bursa dating from the period of Sultan Abdulhamid II, i.e. from the end of the 19th-beginning of the 20th century. The photographs were selected from the collections contained in the archives of IRCICA. The album contains photographs of districts, gates, mosques, tombs, fountains, roads, bridges, ceremonies, personalities. There is also a section on "Photographers and Photograph Studios". This album appeared in the 2011 Evliya Celebi Year declared by UNESCO, since for Evliya Celebi (1611-1684) Bursa was of special importance. It was the first city that he visited outside Istanbul and one of the very few he traveled to specifically to learn about it. ‎Proceedings of the Fourth International Congress on Islamic Civilisation in the Balkans, 12-17 October 2010. Skopje, Macedonia.= Balkanlar'da Islâm Medeniyeti Dördüncü Milletlerarasi Kongre Tebligleri, 13-17 Ekim 2010. Üsküp, Makedonya.‎

‎New English Original bdg. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English, Turkish; and Macedonian, Albanian, Serbian. 2 volumes set: (752 p. 730 p.). Proceedings of the Fourth International Congress on Islamic Civilisation in the Balkans, 12-17 October 2010. Skopje, Macedonia.= Balkanlar'da Islâm Medeniyeti Dördüncü Milletlerarasi Kongre Tebligleri, 13-17 Ekim 2010. Üsküp, Makedonya. This is a collection of the papers that were presented during the international congress on "Islamic Civilisation in the Balkans" held in the Macedonian capital Skopje in October 2010. The congress, organized in cooperation with the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU), was fourth in IRCICA's congress series that focus on the history and cultures of the Balkan region. The Skopje congress was accorded high patronage and opened by H.E. Gjorge Ivanov, President of the Republic Macedonia. President Ivanov also participated in the congress in his capacity as an academician and presented a paper. This State support and scholarly contribution extended to the congress underscored the importance attached to its objectives. The first volume contains the papers that were presented in English or Turkish (39 papers) and the second volume, those presented in Macedonian, Albanian or Serbian (44 papers). Located at crossroads between Europe and Western Asia, the Balkan peoples have been in contact with the Muslim world since at least the 8th century. Various phenomena, including the long experience in trade between the two regions, helped fasten the expansion process, and enhance the notable cultural role, of Islam in the Balkans. The relationship between the Muslim world and the Balkans has not only been one of encounters and exchanges but also one of coexistence. Research papers contributed to the congress addressed a wide range of topics highlighting the multicultural relations specific to the Balkan region. IRCICA's engagement in studies on the region in connection with the history of Islamic civilisation draws from the above aspects of the theme and also takes into account that two Balkan countries are members of the OIC and IRCICA: Albania is a full Member State and Bosnia and Herzegovina is an Observer State. Previously, three congresses were held on the same theme, in Sofia (2000), Tirana (2003) and Bucharest (2006) respectively. A fifth congress was held in May 2015. This program devoted to the history of Islamic civilization in the Balkans has succeeded in drawing interest and participation from around the world in addition to the Balkan countries themselves and generated a fascinating range of studies, as the contents of this publication reflect.‎

Nuh ve Cudi Dagi Sempozyum Bildirileri. 27-29 September 2013. German explorers have visited the summit of Mount Cudi since 1899. Unique photographs were taken and much fascinating information has been assembled. Although I did not visit the site so far myself, I was able to explore the summit by using Google Earth images, through which I indeed managed to put together many important pieces of the jigsaw puzzle on the possible location of what may actually remain of Noah's ark. Johannes Lepsius Figure 2: Johannes Lepsius (Lepsius House, Potsdam) The first photo ever taken on the summit of Mount Cudi stems·from Johannes Lepsius and dates to the summer of 1899. It is printed in his book »Ex Oriente Lux, in which he reports his »Besteigung des Ararat« (»Ascent of Ararat«). He explains: Not the 'Masis' at the border of Russia, but the Cudi on the northern edge of Mesopotamia is the Ararat of Scripture as (found) in oriental tradition, Lepsius was bornin Berlin on December i5, i858, while his father Karl Richard Lepsius (1810-1884) is considered to be the founding father of German Egyptology, who in turn was a friend of the famous naturalist Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859). Lepsius' mother, Elizabeth (1828-1899) was the daughter of the famous composer Bernhard Klein (1793-1832) and the great-granddaughter of the writer Friedrich Nicolai (1733-1811). Consequently at Lepsius' home several influential personalities within the fields of politics, culture and ecclesiastical life regularly gathered. Johannes Lepsius himself had studied math and philosophy, while he received a doctorate in Theology in i880. While he was an assistant reverend at the German‎

‎Armenian architects of Istanbul in the Era of Westernization.= Batililasan Istanbul'un Ermeni mimarlari.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (31 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 168 p., color and b/w ills. Armenian architects of Istanbul in the Era of Westernization.= Batililasan Istanbul'un Ermeni mimarlari. In the era of Westernization, also known as Ottoman Modernization, that took place throughout the entire 19th century and in the early 20th century, transformed the physical appearance of Istanbul. First and foremost the Balians, but also other Armenian architects such as Ohannes Serverian, Mgrdich Charkian, Bedros Nemtze, Mihran Azarian, Hovsep Aznavur, Levon Gureghian, the brothers Aram and Isaac Karakash, Kegham Kavafian, Yetvart Terziyan, Andon and Garabed Tulbendjian, who in earlier periods received their initial training within the industry, but later also graduated from schools in European countries, and ultimately graduated from the School of Fine Arts, played a great role in this transformation. This book is prepared to introduce the Armenian architects who contributed to Istanbul's architectural richness with their works and is the first attempt of its kind. We hope that it will inspire the academic studies in the field to be carried out in the future. The books published in Turkish-English and Armenian-English includes 6 articles written by Edhem Eldem, Afife Batur, Ahmet Ersoy, Alyson Wharton, Elmon Hançer and Lora Baytar; each article has a different approach to the architecture of Istanbul. Moreover, in the book there are more than 100 photos of the architectural structures built by the Armenian architects.‎

‎The art of weights and measures.= Agirlik ve ölçü sanati. [Exhibition catalogue]. Coord. by Zeynep Ögel.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 183 p., color and b/w ills. Setting forth concepts related to weighing and measuring meant developing both practical and philosophical links with the world. When ancient civilizations used seeds produced in the fertile soils of Mesopotamia to establish the first units of weight, the observations they made in relation to the act of measuring created a springboard for civilizations to thrive. The 2nd millennium BC saw the frontiers of discovery advancing along the trade routes between Mesopotamia and Anatolia. While the fascination with precision in weighing and measuring continued, there was a corresponding migration of myths from the realms of the gods to the land of mortals, and concepts like truth and justice became associated with the balancing of the suspended pans of weighing scales. In ancient Egypt the sins of the deceased were weighed on a set of scales, while in ancient Greek and Roman cultures, the weighing scale was a symbol of justice and an indispensable illustrative element in the depiction of gods and goddesses. In Byzantine society, too, the act of just and accurate weighing resonated deeply with ethical sensibilities and recalled the weighing of souls. And in the Ottoman Empire, precise weighing represented the foundations of trust, not only in trade but also just as notably in religious life. "Man is the measure of all things: of the things that are, that they are, of the things that are not, that they are not," proclaimed Protagoras. The endeavor to measure the world with a handful of units brought forth the capacity to recreate it in the abstract. As the measurement of discovery became the substance of myths, weighing and measuring, beyond being mere physical actions, became an important means of self-expression to those captivated by the universe and what lay beyond the boundaries of knowledge. With a selection of objects from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Anatolian Weights and Measures Collection, The Art of Weights and Measures aims to explore, through the eyes of civilizations, gods, merchants, master craftsmen, and their apprentices from the 2nd millennium BC to the present day, how weights and measures have shaped economies, cultures, and intercultural relations, their impact on social dynamics of trust, and their journey towards becoming standardized units.‎

‎The trial of the American spies in Bulgaria. Defendant Mikhail Shipkov.‎

‎Very Good English Modern decorative cloth. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 125, [2] p. The trial of the American spies in Bulgaria. 2000 copies were printed. A report of the trial of M. Shipkov and others. Mihail (Michael) Todorov Shipkov was born to a wealthy family in Bulgaria on January 1, 1911. His secondary education was at the prestigious American founded and Christian based Robert College on the European side of Istanbul, Turkey. His family had derived its wealth from extracting rose oil. With the coming of Communism in Bulgaria after World War Two, the family lost their wealth when their rose fields and factories were nationalized. Reportedly, Communist authorities confiscated 9,000 kilograms of rose oil. Fluent in English, Mihail Shipkov then became a translator at the American Legation in Sofia. It was the worst of political times in Bulgaria. The Cold War was hot: staff members of the American Legation were harassed, arrested, and some died under very suspicious circumstances. For example, in August 1949, Ivan Seculov, a Bulgarian translator employed by the American Legation, died after "falling" out of a four-story window three days after his arrest by the state security militia (secret police). One report has him committing suicide rather than being released from prison to work as a police agent. The truth might never be known. In 1949, the American Legation attempted to get Mihail Shipkov, then 39 years old, and his family exit visas to leave Bulgaria for the United States. The police (militia) opened an investigative file with the code name "????????" (Rodoviiat), translated as "Pink" - not referring to the color, but to his family's rose oil production. On Saturday, August 21, 1949, at 2:30 PM, Mihail Shipkov was arrested by the state security militia, after leaving the American Legation, and taken to the National Assembly building... ‎The Ottoman Empire and the world-economy. (Studies in modern capitalism - Etudes sur le capitalisme moderne).‎

‎Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. [x], [2], 481 p. The Ottoman Empire and the world-economy. (Studies in modern capitalism - Etudes sur le capitalisme moderne). This collection of essays represents a departure from the traditional perspective, recently questioned by many scholars, from which Ottoman history is usually written. Central to the establishment of Western domination over the 'East' is the writing of its history in terms of Western hegemony, above all in the case of the Ottoman Empire, which has been characterised as static, irrational and authoritarian in contrast with the dynamic, rational, democratic West. This book contrasts sharply with conventional studies of the Ottoman Empire, based on this European world-view, that focus on political military, and cultural institutions. Following a series of general theoretical discussions about Ottoman social structure, the contributors turn to case studies directed either to theoretical problems or to 'facts' which suggest new avenues of conceptualisation.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (34 x 25 cm). In English and Turkish. 381 p. 101 letters to the sultan. Letter to the Ottomans.= Sultana 101 mektup. Osmanli'ya mektuplar. Letters, as a means of correspondence by the hands of political leaders, undoubtedly provide us with substantial information about the status of the state in the political arena, the foreign affairs the politicians run and about the significance that the state has in the eyes of the others. And the 101 letters covered in this work are shedding a bit of light upon the political tradition of the Ottomans, and the mutual relations they had with their counter part sete. We chose to give the summaries of the letters in two languages (Turkish-English) so that the range of benefit would be wider.‎
