"The history of Europe and the history of the Ottomans are two parallel histories; for this reason, the history of the two worlds should be studied comparatively.". (Halil Inalcik). From the middle of the fifteenth century on, the Ottoman Empire played a crucial role in shaping European history. This factor has not been weaved into Western historiography to its detriment, because explaining concepts such as raison d'etat, realpolitik, balance of power or even European identity remain somewhat short changed without the role of the Ottoman Empire in the evolution as well as functioning of these concepts. The Ottoman Empire is generally depicted and perceived as the adversary and antithesis of Europe and Europeanness in Western historiography because of certain historic reasons such as the Christian crusading tradition, public hostility due to long lasting warfare, cultural estrangement and perhaps because the Ottomans remained outside the Enlightenment process. However, there is much more to it than struggle. Our research findings presented in this compilation point to the impact of the Ottoman Empire in shaping modern Europe, specifically as of the sixteenth century and socio-cultural exchanges between the two realms through five hundred years of encounter.

It's an official celebration for Mustafa Zeki Pasha's achievements in the Turco-Greco War in 1897-1898. It's written in a beautiful riq'a script. Halil Rifat Pasha was an Ottoman statesman and a Grand Vizier for six years between 1895 until his death in 1901 during the reign of Abdul Hamid II. He was born in Serres Serez and received education in an Islamic type parish school in Salonica Selanik then continued to Mekteb-i M�lkiye in Constantinople. After his education years he started to work as a mailing clerk in Vidin then worked as secretary in the office of the Governor of Salonica. He advanced by degrees and was appointed to higher official positions by passage of time including at Rustchuk. In 1882 he was appointed as mutasarrif of Vidin then in 1886 he was appointed as governor of Sivas where he started a road-building programme. He was subsequently appointed governor of Aidin 1889 and later of Monastir where he fought brigandage units which was rife in the province. He was appointed as minister of internal affairs in 1893 . Then he was appointed as grand vizier in November 1895 . The most important events in his era as grand vizier were the riots of Sason in 1895 and in Crete in 1897 as well as the Greco-Turkish War of 1897 which ended with Ottoman victory. His motto in the road building campaign was "Any place where you can't go is not yours"! Gidemedigin yer senin degildir!. Zeki Pasha was one of the most trusted Ottoman generals and statesmen of the Sultan Abdulhamid II. He served as Tophane Counselor for 18 years during the reign of Sultan Abd�lhamid II. In 1899 Italian architect Alexandre Vallaury built the 'Tophane M�siri Zeki Pasa Mansion Yali' one of the most valuable estates of Istanbul on his behalf. In 1908 he fell out of favor with the declaration of the Second Constitutional Monarchy by Union and Progress Society Ittihat ve Terakki Cemiyeti and was deported first to B�y�kada and then to Rhodes. The Noor'ul Osmaniya Mosque, Ottoman Cricket Club, Noor'ul Hamidiyya Mosque in Cape Town and many Ottoman graves in South Africa are evidence of the Ottoman presence and traces in the region. He went to Istanbul and continued to Hendese-i Mülkiye and Engineer Mekteb-i Âlîsi for seven years. After starting with "Aydin Province Umur-i Nafia Third Class Engineering", Halid Ziya Bey, who continued to work as a deputy chief engineer on 14 March 1910, left Aydin and returned to Istanbul after continuing this duty for about six and a half months. As a teacher, he taught Accounting, Algebra, Geometry, and Topography at Halkali Ziraat Mekteb-i Âlîsi and Darussafaka. Halid Ziya Bey, who was appointed as a teacher of Hendese and Cosmography in Kabatas High School, started to practice the profession of engineering and cadastral, which was his main specialty in 1327. After the First World War, the Istanbul Government started its activities in order to capture and neutralize Halid Ziya Bey and his friends. Upon the harsh measures taken, Halid Ziya Bey had to live as a fugitive in the Hasirci Mountains of Eskisehir for a while with the armed force attached to him. Halid Ziya Bey, who was involved in the movement in Anatolia until the end of the National Liberation Struggle, returned to his engineering duty after the proclamation of the Republic and was included in the cadastral works again. In 1925, Halid Ziya Bey was appointed as the Head of the Science Committee of the new cadastre organization. He wrote 5 books on cadastre, photogrammetry, trigonometry, and cadastral tools in 1928 and 1929. In addition, as a result of personal work in 1928, the road between the provincial division of the Republic of Turkey with cities has prepared a comprehensive map to show up in the forest and mining. Ariburnu 1915: Çanakkale Savasi'ndan belgesel örnekler. For the forces at Gallipoli, there was no retreat beyond the trenches. Surrounded by the sea on one side and precipitous cliffs on the other, trenches were veritable traps offering no escape. Though death ran rampant in the trenches, they were also the site of human stories that would become the stuff of epics. To the Ottoman soldiers fighting no longer in the name of the Sultan, but for their own people and country, each trench was their homeland. For the Anzac soldiers, too, the battle marked a turning point, as they began to question the British Empire, and with their epic heroism in a distant land so far from home, started to form their own identity. The powers at war in Gallipoli shared a common fate. In a fight to the death waged in trenches facing each another at distances of just eight, ten, twenty meters, they learned to respect one another, and their common fate would lay the foundations for a friendship that would flourish once the battle had drawn to a close. This book is the product of Haluk Oral's passionate quest of some twenty years, during which he fastidiously collected the documents, objects and recollections you will read about herein. It is not a typical study of war or war history. At the heart of this work are the 'human landscapes' of the Battle of Ariburnu, one of the most critical clashes of the Gallipoli Campaign. The author traces the stories of the people of both sides, shaped as they were on the thin line dividing life and death, there on that narrow coastal strip. A bloodstained map, a flask inscribed with its owner's name, purchased from an antique shop and an order handwritten by Mustafa Kemal are just a few of the objects that serve as the points of departure for the stories in this volume. The autonomous short stories in this book, which proves the significance of not only the written word but of visuality in reimagining history, provide us with important clues to the past. With its 'micro' history approach, this volume deftly reveals aspects of history that are hidden in the details, and thus so often overlooked by 'macro' history.
