‎Fox, George (1624-1691).‎

‎A JOURNAL or Historical Account of the Life, Travels, Sufferings. Christian Experiences and Labour of Love, in the Work of the Ministry of that Ancient, Eminent and Faithful Servant of Jesus Christ George Fox. Third Edition.‎

‎pp. lix, 679, (xxviii). Folio. Engraved bookplate of: John Glaisyer, Chymist & Druggist, Brighton" Engraved armorial bookplate of Francis Frederick Fox. Contemporary full leather binding, joints cracked. A nice copy of an important and scarce Quaker work. George Fox (1624-1691), was the founder of the Society of Friends (Quakers). By nature serious and contemplative, at the age of 19 he entered upon a wandering quest for spiritual enlightenment. In 1646 he underwent a mystical experience that convinced him that Christianity was not an outward profession but an inner light by which Christ directly illumines the believing soul. Revelation was for Fox not confined to the Scriptures. In 1647 he began to preach. Although often the victim of mob brutality and eight times imprisoned between 1649 and 1675, Fox won many followers, especially among groups of separatists. In 1668 he prepared the first pattern of organization, which was for some years to serve as the discipline of the Society of Friends. The London Yearly Meeting was started in 1671. To confirm his followers in their beliefs and to spread the truths, Fox went in 1671 to the West Indies and to America, where he made arduous journeys to various colonies scattered between New England and North Carolina. Later he twice visited Holland. His sincerity, serenity, fearlessness, and powerful preaching are attested to by a number of his contemporaries. This Journal, with a preface by William Penn, was first published in 1694. An early owner of this book was Francis Frederick Fox (1832-1915) the 2nd son of Francis Ker Fox of Brislington House. He was an oil and colour merchant, President of the Grateful Society in 1869. Sadly, his wife Alice died in childbirth in 1870 and he was left a widower with six children. He was Master of the Society of Merchant Venturers in 1878 & 79 and Sheriff in 1894. He was a J.P. for Bristol and for Gloucestershire and an Alderman for the city from 1865. He wrote extensively on local history. Perhaps he was a descendant of the great Quaker George Fox. Smith p. 690; Sabin 25352. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PA62‎

Historia general de las cosas de nueva Espaa General history of the things of New Spain is an encyclopedic work about the people and culture of central Mexico compiled by Fray Bernardino de Sahagn 14991590 a Franciscan missionary who arrived in Mexico in 1529 eight years after completion of the Spanish conquest by Hernan Corts. Commonly called the Florentine Codex the manuscript came into the possession of the Medici no later than 1588 and is now in the Medicea Laurenziana Library in Florence. Sahagn began conducting research into indigenous cultures in the 1540s using a methodology that scholars consider to be a precursor to modern anthropological field technique. His motives were primarily religious: he believed that to convert the natives to Christianity and eradicate their devotion to false gods it was necessary to understand those gods and the hold they had on the Aztec people. Sahagn was repelled by much of native culture but he also came to admire many qualities of the Aztecs." --Medicea Laurenziana Library Florence Editorial Porrua hardcover‎

‎New York: Hispanic Society of America 1928. First Edition. Cloth. Fine. A fine first edition. Blue cloth boards with gilt title stamping on spine. Text of diary in Spanish other text in English. From the private library of Larry Southwick collector's marginalia pencilled near front hinge. Maps facsimiles drawings portraits. 206 pp. Octavo 6 1/2 x 10 inches tall. Sebastin Francisco de Miranda y Rodrguez de Espinoza March 28 1750 July 14 1816 commonly known as Francisco de Miranda was a Venezuelan revolutionary. Although his own plans for the independence of the Spanish American colonies failed he is regarded as a forerunner of Simn Bolvar who during the Spanish American wars of independence successfully liberated a vast portion of South America. Miranda led a romantic and adventurous life. An idealist he developed a visionary plan to liberate and unify all of Spanish America but his own military initiatives on behalf of an independent Spanish America ended in 1812. He was handed over to his enemies and four years later in 1816 died in a Spanish prison. Within fourteen years of his death however most of Spanish America was independent. --- wikipedia Hispanic Society of America hardcover‎

‎FRERET (Amédée).‎

‎Le mariage des Nègres.‎

‎Paris, Depeuille, [1795]. Gravure originale (43 x 52 cm).‎

‎Fredrickson N. Jaye. Catalogue of the exhibition by Sandra Gibb. Foreword by John E. Langdon.‎

‎THE COVENANT CHAIN: INDIAN CEREMONIAL AND TRADE SILVER.‎

‎Ottawa: National Museum of Man 1980. 168 pp large 8vo 9 3/8" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "Indian trade silver is a fascinating and little-known part of our cultural heritage - a product of the interaction between two profoundly different cultures during the European exploration of North America. Originating in the early diplomatic gifts of medals to friendly Indians the distribution of silver became widespread during the height of the fur trade 1760 to 1821. Silver ornaments designed specifically for the fur trade included brooches gorgets armbands legbands earrings nose-rings crosses and headbands. A travelling exhibition of over two hundred of these ornaments was organized by the National Museum of Man Ottawa and this book was written to accompany it. Previously known only to scholars and collectors this unusual art form has now become accessible to a much wider public. The silver ornaments created for the fur trade were produced by both European and colonial silversmiths but the Iroquois began to make similar pieces for their people after silver ceased to be available through the fur trade. Although the craft died out it has recently been revived and the exhibition includes many examples of modern Iroquois workmanship. Some pieces are based on traditional trade-silver patterns but others are of the silversmiths' own design. The book illustrates and describes all the silver chosen for the exhibition from museums in Canada and the United States. Paintings and portraits of the period show the colourful and unexpected ways the Indians wore their silver jewellery." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Minor rubbing fading to colour on rear hinge area light browning at top of flaps. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good-. ‎FRIESZ (Henri Auguste).‎
