Douglas Stephen A.
Speech of Senator Douglas of Illinois Against the Admission of Kansas. Under the Lecompton Constitution. Delivered in the Senate of the United States March 22 1858
No Place: No Publisher. Pamphlet. Good. No publisher place or date. Presumed Washington DC circa 1858. Pamphlet. Lacking any wraps that may have been issued. 30 pp. A lengthy speech arguing against the Lecompton Constitution and the entrance of Kansas to the Union under it including some heated debate between Douglas and several other members of the Senate. Supported by President Buchanan the Lecompton Constitution would have admitted Kansas as a slave state through exemptions written into the constitution. The vote on the constitution was boycotted by the opposing side making its acceptance rather meaningless. Senator Douglas broke with his fellow democrats and did not favor the Lecompton Constitution see Wikipedia for previous information. Stephen A. Douglas was a politician from Illinois perhaps best known for his debates with Abraham Lincoln while running for the senate in that state. GOOD condition. Minor toning and soiling to the piece with offsetting along the rear fore edge. Two pages with heavy offsetting/browning in the interior from a piece of paper laid in. No Publisher unknown

Dow George Francis
History of Topsfield Massachusetts and Map
Topsfield: The Topsfield Historical Society 1940. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Stated as one of 400 copies printed. Handsome straight copy approaching Near Fine condition. Splendid hard cover with buckramesque tough green cloth boards and good spine gilt. Measures 9 1/2 x 6 1/2". The books flaws are rather mild to my eye some of the early sheets have mild improper closing sort of crease so mild as to be hard to see. Additionally there is just a bit of tip bumping. Text seems superb unmarked parchmentlike paper stored in acid free clear sleeve. Accompanying the book is a whimsical map of Topsfield folded and worn/darkened at the folds dated as 1650-1950. Foto of book to follow. We feel that books offered for internet sale should be described thoroughly and accurately. Books listed by Brass Dolphin are so described and graded using the strict traditional standards. For this reason we have virtually zero returns. The Topsfield Historical Society Hardcover
