Edition originale et unique, rare, de ce document illustré de 12 tableaux hors texte dont 7 dépliants et un plan de plantation plié en fin. L'auteur qui signe "citoyen habitant cultivateur de Saint-Domingue" était une importante personnalité de l'île, régisseur de plusieurs grosses plantations dont celle marquis de Paroy. Ce document reprend et commente un mémoire qu'il avait adressé au ministère de la Marine et des Colonies en l'an VII (1799) pour convaincre les autorités françaises de l'intérêt de conserver et d'étendre le domaine colonial. La première partie "contient les bases d'un plan d'administration des plantations": cultures, gestion des terres et du personnel, organisation des résidences des cultivateurs, choix des cultures. Parmi ses recommandations, Avalle se prononce en faveur d'un "adoucissement de l'état des cultivateurs noirs". Dans la seconde partie, il livre le résultat d'une véritable enquête de terrain qui le conduit à rendre compte du "mouvement d'une sucrerie pendant une année", illustré de statistiques; suivi "d'observations (…) fondées sur le fruit [d'une expérience acquise] pendant plus de vingt années d'administration": nombre de cultivateurs, bâtiments et objets de manufactures, qualification des emplois, temps de travail….. Les Archives nationales et celles du Patrimoine de la Martinique conservent plusieurs documents de / et sur M.-A. Avalle qui témoignent de l'importance de sa position aux Antilles, de son activité, ainsi que de ses relations avec les autorités locales, dont Toussaint l'Ouverture. At the age of 19 Obreg�n joined up with a Spanish expedition to California from which he returned with travel experience. In 1554 at the age of 20 he joined the expedition of Francisco de Ibarra to explore the frontiers of Spanish territory and to secure mineral resources. The expedition was a success founding several settlements and allowing the Spanish to colonize Zacatecas. Later in life Obreg�n published an account of his travels the Historia de los descubrimientos de Nueva Espana in which he described the landscape of northern Mexico. Appears disbound from a larger volume.16 pp. Bears the signature of Isaiah Thomas although there is no direct provenance to establish that this is the signature of the noted American printer. There are some similarities to current online examples of his signature with differences noted too as well as differences noted in the way Thomas wrote his signature. This is a speech addressing the threat to the United States sovereignty at the hands of Great Britain alluding to threats to seamen etc. as well as the War of 1812 although not mentioned directly. Bangs also addresses the threat to the United States through the dissolution of the Union into smaller groups of states referring to the errors of Northern Federalism and threats to New England in the strength of larger states of the South and West. Edward Bangs was a lawyer and politician a Jeffersonian Republican from Worcester Massachusetts as well as an early member of the American Antiquarian Society see American Antiquarian Society website. GOOD condition. General uneven browning to the paper with minor foxing and staining to the front/title page as well as a few minor notations at the top. Pamphlet disbound from a larger volume. 24pp. A speech/sermon discussing the War of 1812 interspersing biblical anecdotes among references to war and its causes. Barker touches upon the supposed injustices of England infringing upon the rights of the United States including control over the ocean etc. Barker also cites historical references including the Revolutionary War Burgoyne Cornwallis and Washington as well as referencing the strength of the U.S. Constitution and the obligation of states to uphold the law-speaking against a potential dissolution of the union. Joseph Barker was a member of both the US House of Representatives and Massachusetts state legislature as well as being a minister. GOOD condition. Moderate to heavy foxing to the front page with minor to moderate foxing throughout. General browning to the paper. Faint ownership signature at the upper right corner of the front page.
