Primarily a history of the missionary work on the islands of Hawaii preceded by a short history of Hawaii and its people including the various wars and battles in the 1700s then progressing into a year by year account of the actions of Christian missionaries and the reactions/actions of the Hawaiian people. Hiram Bingham was part of the first group of Protestant missionaries to Hawaii and sought to reform much of the Hawaiian way of life including land holding and economic principles seeking to bring them into line with US values at the time see Wikipedia. POOR condition. Ex-theological institution with spine label interior stamping pastedowns and markings present. Rear cover CRACKED and very tenuously attached to the binding. Front hinge cracked and separated repaired with light brown cloth tape in a rather unsightly manner. Leather backstrip detached along the rear hinge with cracking chipping and creasing present including loss at the head of the spine. Leather scuffed and worn along the covers and extremities. Uneven fading and darkening. Minor scattered foxing and spotting throughout. Fold out map torn into two pieces neatly along the last righthand vertical fold. Sabin 5432.
