BRUNET (Jean-Baptiste).
Fils du général Jean-Baptiste Brunet, Jean-Baptiste Brunet se distingua à la bataille de Fleurus. Il servit longtemps sous les ordres du Duc de Dantzig, à l'armée de Sambre-et-Meuse ou il fut nommé général de brigade puis à l’armée du Rhin et dans les campagnes d’Italie. Il fit partie de l'expédition de Saint-Domingue en 1801, et obtint le commandement de l'avant-garde du général Rochambeau. En 1802, il s'empare des fort de l'Anse, de la Liberté et de la Hougue. C'est dans sa division et sur son ordre, que fut arrêté Toussaint Louverture qui servait sous ses ordres. Commandant de la place du Môle, il y fut attaqué le 18 novembre, et laissa pénétrer jusqu'au portes les Noirs, dont il fit alors un horrible carnage. Il eut ensuite le commandement de la partie Sud et de l'Ouest d'Haïti après la mort du général Watrin et de celui des Cayes-Saint-Louis après le départ du général Desbarreaux. Prisonnier par les Anglais au retour de la seconde expédition de Saint-Domingue il ne recouvra sa liberté qu’en 1814. 10 lettres manuscrites du général Brunet à l'amiral Duckworth concernant la violation de la capitulation sous les ordres du commodor Cumberland, la détention et la mort, du général d'Arbois de Jubainville sur le navire le Pellican, les adieux à Duckworth. 1803-1804. Handwritten essays throughout mostly on single sides only with a few newspaper clippings relating to the topics written about included. Believed to be the journal of a relative or the wife of Walter Copeland Bryant a resident of Brockton Massachusetts who was heavily involved in the arts and fine art scene in Boston and beyond. Copeland and his wife assembled a private collection of paintings by notable 19th century American painters many of which were bequeathed to the Brockton Public Library. This journal bears a paper label on the front reading either Ryah or Ryan Osborne Bryant with an address of 374 West Elm Street Brockton Massachusetts. Inside are several essays on different subjects apparently given as presentations to the French Circle and other clubs. Dates that these were either written or given as lectures appear at the beginning of the pieces. Subjects include the composer Chopin; music at the time of Louis XIV; social life at the time of Louis XIV; a paper on Azaz le Rideau; an introduction given at a lecture by the artist J.J. Enneking on March 16 1905 newspaper clipping indicates the introduction was given by Mrs. Walter Copeland Bryant; an introduction to a Mr. Chaffee February 6th 1905; an introduction to Mr. Matsuki relating to a talk on the art of old Japan on November 10 1904.
