Prima edizione di questo romanzo, ispirato alle "Avventure di Telemaco" di Fénelon, in cui attraverso il racconto dei viaggi di Ciro si fornisce la descrizione di un regno ideale, popolato dalle figure storiche e mitologiche dell'antichità classica. L'opera, che conobbe grande fortuna per tutto il corso del '700, contiene anche numerose considerazioni di natura filosofica, dericate in parte da Fénelon e in parte dal "True Intellectual System of the Universe" di Ralph Cudworth. Dal canto suo, lo storico della filosofia John Laird, nel suo saggio "Hume's Philosophy of Human Nature" (London, 1932) sostiene che alcune categorie del pensiero di David Hume derivino proprio da Ramsay, che egli aveva conosciuto a Parigi nel 1737. Andrew Michael Ramsay (Ayr, Scozia, 1686-Saint-Germain-en-Laye,1743), letterato scozzese poi naturalizzato francese, fu convertito nel 1709 dall'anglicanesimo al cattolicesimo dal suo amico Fénelon. Combattente in gioventù al fianco degli inglesi nella Guerra di Successone Spagnola, fu precettore e poi intendente del Principe di Turenne e fu legato d'amicizia anche a Rousseau e a Louis Racine. Although it informed many aspects of Greek society, metis was all but absent from the language of Greek philosophy. Invoking indigenous Chinese debates, Lisa Raphals here examines the role and significance of metic intelligence in classical Chinese philosophy, literature, history, and military strategy.Raphals first examines the range of meanings of the Chinese word zhi. As with the Greek metis, the uses of zhi include "wisdom," "knowledge," "intelligence," "skill," "cleverness," and "cunning." Drawing on parallels between the two traditions, she argues that, in China as in Greece, metic intelligence tacitly informed many aspects of cultural and social life. In China, these included views of the nature of knowledge and language, standards of personal and social morality, and theories of military strategy and statecraft. After surveying representative texts from the Warring States period, Raphals considers the function of metic intelligence as the dominant quality of central characters in two novels from the Ming dynasty, the Romance of Three Kingdoms and Journey to the West. Finally, she compares the treatment of themes of heroism and recognition in the Chinese and Greek narrative traditions.

Si può dire nello stesso tempo di lui assai bene e assai male e per giustificare il male come il bene le prove sembrano moltiplicarsi. Lo storico moderno è forse meno sensibile alle sue categorie morali, ma quanto afferma è indubbiamente vero. Se però è difficile giudicare Giustiniano, ancor più lo è con la moglie Teodora e ciò per due buoni motivi. Il primo è che Teodora imperatrice è assai diversa dalla giovane attrice che aveva condotto una vita sregolata a Costantinopoli, quasi come si trattasse di due persone diverse, anche se la storia annovera altri casi del genere. Il secondo, di ordine tecnico, consiste nel fatto che l'informazione sulla sua attività è piuttosto carente e fortemente contraddittoria. Quella poi che dovrebbe essere la fonte principale, la 'Storia segreta' di Procopio di Cesarea, sembra per molti storici presentare un quadro distorto della realtà dovuto all'odio viscerale che aveva l'autore per lei."
