OXILIA Manfredi -
- !! ATTENTION !!: : NOT A BOOK : “extract” or “excerpt” means simply a few pages, original nonetheless, printed in a magazine. Pages are indicated as in "from” “to", for example: 229/231 means the text comprises three pages (229, 230 and 231). If the magazine that contained the pages is not mentioned, it is because it is unknown to us.

Ikons : A Collection of Stories
"Even after thirty years the Mavromatis family cannot understand their life in Australia. Until Peter Mavromatis's first exhibition as an "ethnic" photographer clarifies everything. In this collection of stories we follow the family fortunes. Old YiaYia had already lived her life in the old country. Christois and Elli wage a private war as confused as the motives which brought them from Cyprus. For Peter, their Austalian born son and proud hope for the future, life is a contest of shallow cultural identities and allegiances. Ikons is a vivid and contentious portrayal of a family united only by society's view of them as outsiders" 198p. Remainder mark, else near fine. Book

PARKE, Trent
The Black Rose
Adelaide: Art Gallery of South Australia 2015. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Adelaide Art Gallery of South Australia 2015. Oblong quarto 168 pages with numerous illustrations from photographs by Trent Parke several in colour. Pictorial papered boards; tiny red mark on the front free endpaper; a near-fine copy. A substantial catalogue published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name held at the Art Gallery of South Australia March to May 2015. It was compiled by the photographer in association with curators Maria Zagala and Julie Robinson. The text accompanying the images is extracted 'from the fourteen artist's books that comprise "The Black Rose Diaries"'. <p>'"The Black Rose" represents the culmination of seven years of work by internationally renowned Adelaide photographer Trent Parke. The catalyst for the exhibition was a tragic incident in the artist's past which has led Parke to explore universal ideas from a deeply personal perspective - birth death love loss memory and the passing of time. Between 2007 and 2014 in an attempt to reclaim memories of his childhood Parke took thousands of photographs of his surroundings and of everyday objects and wrote down his dreams and observations in diaries' from the exhibition website. PARKHOUSE, Thomas Anstey (editor)
Reprints and Papers relating to the Autochthones of Australia
Woodville: The Editor 1923. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Woodville The Editor 1923 and 1935. Octavo two volumes viii 176 and iii-vi 47 pages. Brown cloth lettered in gilt on the spine; covers a trifle rubbed at the extremities; edges very slightly marked; marbled endpapers of the first volume a little mottled on the plain inside surface as usual; an excellent set. The articles are by John Stephens William Wyatt William Williams C.G. Teichelmann and C.W. Schuermann and M. Moorhouse. Both volumes were hand-set and printed by Thomas Parkhouse who died before the completion of the second volume - his daughter Mary finished printing the page he was working on. Norman Tindale in his preface to the second volume states that 100 copies of the first volume were produced but we have sold a copy containing a 1934 letter to the amateur anthropologist Harold Sheard from Parkhouse wherein he claims to have printed 80 copies. Either way sets are scarce. 2 items. The Editor hardcover

PARKHOUSE, Thomas Anstey (editor)
Reprints and Papers relating to the Autochthones of Australia
Woodville: The Editor 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Woodville The Editor 1933 and 1935. Octavo two volumes viii 176; and iii-vi 47 pages. Brown sand-grain cloth blocked in gilt on the spines and front covers the latter with a design featuring a boomerang; cloth lightly flecked and rubbed; corners lightly bumped; trifling signs of age and handling; in near-fine condition. A presentation set with the first volume inscribed and signed by the editor who also hand-set and printed the book 'To my brother John with Christmas greetings TA Parkhouse 1933'. The second volume is signed and dated January 1936 by his daughter M.A. Parkhouse who finished its printing after her father's death; we presume it to be her personal copy. The introduction to the second volume by Norman B. Tindale indicates that the first volume was published in an edition of 100 copies in October 1933 despite the preface dated 8 May 1923 likely a misprint frequently overlooked. <p>This compendium is an important resource on the Indigenous languages of South Australia including the Ngarrindjeri Kaurna and Ngaiawang languages. The publications reprinted are: 'Adelaide and Encounter Bay Tribes' by John Stephens; 'Some Account of the Manners and Superstitions of the Adelaide and Encounter Bay Aboriginal Tribes with a Vocabulary' by William Wyatt; 'A Vocabulary of the Language of the Aborigines of the Adelaide District and other Friendly Tribes of the Province of South Australia' by William Williams; 'Outlines of a Grammar Vocabulary and Phraseology of the Aboriginal Language of South Australia spoken by the Natives in and for some distance around Adelaide' by C.G. Teichelmann and C. Shuermann; and 'A Vocabulary and Outlines of the Grammatical Structure of the Murray River Language spoken by the Natives of South Australia from Wellington on the Murray as far as the Rufus' by M. Moorhouse. <p>Loosely inserted in the second volume is an original photograph 100 × 165 mm of the press used to produce the books; the two formes of type in the image may well relate to the work. 2 items.
