‎Pianta archeologica a proiezione verticale, con rappresentazione in alzato degli edifici antichi. Disegnata ed ideata da Pirro Ligorio, viene incisa da Jacob Bos per l’editore Tramezzino. Si tratta della grande pianta archeologica del Ligorio, frutto della sua valente esperienza di archeologo, che ebbe una grande influenza sulla produzione topografica della città per oltre due secoli. Per elaborare questa pianta, si avvalse della sua profonda conoscenza archeologica delle rovine di Roma, delle fonti classiche e di una vasta documentazione costituita da iscrizioni, bassorilievi e monete antiche. Per la parte topografica il Ligorio si basa sulla pianta del Bufalini del 1551.Roma entro le mura appare come un fantasioso insieme di edifici, alcuni noti e ancora presenti e altri che, sebbene localizzati con una certa esattezza, indubbiamente sono frutto di ricostruzioni abbastanza fantasiose. Non mancano gli errori di localizzazione, come ad esempio il Foro Romano, erroneamente collocato tra il Campidoglio ed il Palatino. Il primo stato della carta è noto solo attraverso gli esemplari conservati al British Museum e alla Philadelphia Library Company. La carta ebbe una ristampa inalterata, circa un secolo dopo per mano di Gian Battista de Rossi. Dopo un altro secolo circa (1773) anche Carlo Losi ne realizza una ristampa dalle lastre originali, che poi furono acquisite da Giovanni Scudellari e ristampate verso il 1820/30.In alto, lungo il bordo superiore, è impresso il titolo: ANTEIQUAE URBIS IMAGO ACCURATISSIME EX VETUSTEIS MONUMENTEIS FORMATA. Archaeological map with vertical projection, with representation in elevation of ancient buildings. Designed and conceived by Pirro Ligorio, it is engraved by Jacob Bos for the publisher Tramezzino. It is the great archaeological plant of Ligorio, the result of his valuable experience as an archaeologist, which had a great influence on the topographic production of the city for over two centuries. In order to elaborate this plan, he used his deep archaeological knowledge of the ruins of Rome, classical sources and a vast documentation consisting of inscriptions, bas-reliefs and ancient coins. For the topographic part Ligorio is based on the map by Bufalini of 1551.Rome within the walls appears as a fanciful set of buildings, some of them known and still present and others that, although located with a certain accuracy, are undoubtedly the result of quite fanciful reconstructions. There is no lack of localization errors, such as the Roman Forum, erroneously located between the Capitol and the Palatine Hill. The first state of the map is known only through the examples preserved at the British Museum and the Philadelphia Library Company. The ma was reprinted unchanged, about a century later by Gian Battista de Rossi. ‎Magnifique estampe figurant la mort du général Montgomery lors de l'attaque de Québec, le 31 décembre 1775, publiée par Antonio Cesare de Poggi en 1794. Elle a été gravée par le graveur danois Johan Frederick Clemens, d'après une peinture de l'artiste américain John Trumbull éxécutée en 1786, dont le titre original est The Death of General Montgomery in the Attack on Quebec, December 31, 1775. La bataille de Québec eut lieu le 31 décembre 1775, au commencement de la Guerre d'Indépendance des États-Unis, qui avait débuté quelques mois plus tôt, le 19 avril 1775. Cette bataille opposa les forces de l'armée continentale américaine des Treize Colonies, commandées par le général Richard Montgomery, à celles des Britanniques qui défendaient la ville de Québec, sous les ordres de Guy Carleton. La bataille aboutit à la première défaite majeure de la guerre pour les Américains, avec de lourdes pertes et le décès de Montgomery. Trumbull dépeint le moment où le général Montgomery expire dans les bras du major Matthias Ogden. Devant lui, sur le sol enneigé, reposent, près d'un canon brisé, les corps de ses deux aides-de-camp, les capitaines Jacob Cheeseman et John MacPherson. Les lieutenants John Humphries et Samuel Cooper, et le lieutenant-colonel Donald Campbell, entourent les deux personnages centraux dans un demi-cercle protecteur, tandis qu'un chef indien de la tribu Oneida, Joseph Louis Cook, également connu sous le nom de colonel Joseph Louis, et messager de Montgomery lors de la bataille, lève avec défi son tomahawk en direction des tirs. Au premier plan à gauche, on voit s'agiter trois personnages, le major Return Jonathan Meigs et les capitaines Samuel Ward et William Hendricks, sous le choc à la vue de leur général mourant. À l'extrême droite se trouve le colonel William Thompson du 1st Pennsylvania Regiment. En 1835, lors d'une exposition de ses œuvres à l'Université de Yale, John Trumbull décrivait la scène en ces termes : "Le chagrin et la surprise marquent les visages des différents personnages. La terre couverte de neige, les arbres dépouillés de leur feuillage, la désolation de l'hiver et les ténèbres de la nuit accentuent le caractère mélancolique de la scène." C'est le deuxième tableau d'une série de peintures historiques sur la guerre d'Indépendance réalisée par l'artiste, le premier étant The Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker's Hill, June 17, 1775, ou La Mort du général Warren à la bataille de Bunker Hill, le 17 juin 1775. Johan Frederick Clemens fut le premier à réaliser une gravure d'après la peinture de Trumbull. Il existe une autre édition de sa gravure publiée en 1798, avec le titre The Death of General Montgomery in the Attack of Quebec Dec.r 1775 (exemplaire au Philadelphia Museum of Art). Bel exemplaire.
